I can sing you the melody via SKYPE, but can't write a lick of music. I gave an El Tri Los Panchos record LP (the old size between a 45 and the 60s sized LPs) which had this song and so many other chassics on it.

This is too funny. My wife and I were having dinner in a local Mexican restaurant last night in Old Town. A single guitarist/singer stopped at the next table and, for his first selection, played --- "Maria Elena." I remember the Los Indios Tabajaros, allegedly two Jivaro Indians from Brazil, who made an instrumental recording of the song in the late 1950's or early '60's. It made the charts and hung around a while.

A little more searching, and got my hands on a sound clip and a recording. It'd still appreciate getting the melody as written in the original sheet music, as well as verification on the introductory lyrics (which vary in three spots with each citation I find.)

Somewhere on the net I found Spanish lyrics for "Maria Elena" which include a six-line introduction beginning:

I assume these belong to Barcelata's original (1925), though none of the recordings I've heard (bilingual or English-only) include it. If someone has Barcelata's sheet music, please let me know how the introductory melody goes, via ABC, a dot scan, a MIDI link or some other means. Thanks in advance.

The sheet music collections holding it show a 1941 copyright date, so you won't be able to see one there.

Lyrics are available here: Maria Elena lyrics (amongst other places)

There is a transcription from a Ry Cooder version here: Maria Elena (standard notation and tab for guitar).

If you're interested, I've generated a couple of lead sheets (pdf) from midi files I've found on the net (just imported into Band in a Box - no cleaning up, but usable I think).
