I'm not sure of the title, but I think it is (I'm in heaven when I'm in my mother's arms)It also could be (When I;m in my mother's arms)or
(In my mother's arms)and I believe it came out in the 1930s.I've exhausted all of my resources. All help appreciated. Thanks Louie Roy

There is an MP3 of this song available for free download on the net, song by the tenor, William Robyn in 1920. The website for this is
www.archive.org/details/williamrobyn. Robyn's real name was William Rubin and he was a Cantor in a NYC synagogue. He passed away in 1996 at the age of 101.

I believe that this song is now in the public domain. If anyone can obtain a copy of the sheet music and printed lyrics of the song I know someone in the UK who will sequence a professional grade midi-karaoke file of it for me.

These are the words I remember to the song (I'm in heaven when I'm in my mother's arms)I know some of them are not correct but with the help of Peace and a couple of others the correct lyrics can be posted.I learned it in the 1930s.

Once a little lad feeling mighty bad
Wouldn't learn his lessons as he should
The teacher shook her head looked at him and said
Son you'll be sorry if you don't be good
You'll never go to heaven when you die
He looked at her and made this reply

I don't have to die to go to heaven
There's an angel here on earth that I love
She's the queen of the old armed chair
And she's sweeter than any angel up above
She's my mother she's my guardian and protector
And she keeps me from all harm
I don't have to die to go to heaven
I'm in heaven when I'm in my mother's arms

I know these words are not all correct, but my
foggy brain now isn't as sharp as it was 81 years ago

Louie,
The complete song is on the MP3 sung by William Robyn on the website that I listed earlier on this thread. Robyn sings the song very slow and clear so you can easily transcribe the lyrics just by listening to it.

Naughty little lad acting mighty bad
Wouldn't do his lessons as he should
Teacher shook her head looked at him and said
You'll be sorry if you don't be good
You'll never go to heaven when you die
Then the lad made this reply

I don't have to die to go to heaven
There's a heaven here on earth I love
Where I can hear the voice of an angel
Just as sweet as any angel up above
She's queen of just a plain old rocking chair
When she holds me safe from harm
So I don't have to die to go to heaven
I'm in heaven when I'm in my mother's arms

Repeat second stanza

I listened to the mp3 (provided by Sol) which is quite clear, Louis. There are the 'correct' words. Ain't the folk process wonderful?

Link to mp3 here. It's a bit slow to load, but it works.

Click the blue "3.2" to the right of the title. If it doesn't load the first time, give it another shot.

The lyrics submitted by Peace are the ones sung by Henry Burr on his
Columbia recording of this tune. It is pure pathos, and beautifully sung. I am not aware of this having yet been re-recorded onto modern media.

From: Jim Dixon

From the sheet music at Mississippi State University. There is another copy at The Maine Music Box:

I'M IN HEAVEN WHEN I'M IN MY MOTHER'S ARMS
Words by Howard Johnson and Cliff Hess; music by Milton Ager.
New York: Leo Feist, Inc., ©1920.

1. Naughty little lad, acting mighty bad,
Wouldn't do his lessons as he should.
Teacher shook her head, looked at him and said:
"You'll be sorry if you don't be good.
You'll never go to heaven when you die.
Then the lad made this reply:

CHORUS: I don't have to die to go to heaven.
There's a heaven here on earth I love,
Where I can hear the voice of an angel
Just as sweet as any angel up above.
She's queen of just a plain old rocking chair,
Where she holds me safe from harm,
So I don't have to die to go to heaven;
I'm in heaven when I'm in my mother's arms.

2. While she gazed at him, teacher's eyes grew dim.
Mem'ry painted dreams of long ago
Of the time when she sat on mother's knee,
List'ning to a song so sweet and low.
"You've learned your lesson," teacher softly sighed.
Once again the lad replied: CHORUS.

[Does anybody else find it creepy that a teacher (or anybody) would tell a kid "You'll never go to heaven when you die" because he "wouldn't do his lessons"?]
