Subject: BS: Hillary Clinton - the best thing since..
From: Little Hawk
Date: 29 Mar 06 - 12:57 AM

It's been awhile since I talked about how majorly cool and devastatingly attractive and compelling Hillary Clinton is, and I know it drives Republicans and neocons out of their tiny minds when I do that, so...it's time!

Isn't she great? Bill Clinton must've been out of his frikkin' mind carrying on with all those other women when he already had the best. Man, it just boggles the mind.

Most republican men have never even dreamed of having a woman that special, and that's what really drives them nuts. Sheer frustrated, po-faced envy, that's what it is.

And she's smart. Hoo-boy, that dame is smart as a tack. You can't pull the wool over Hillary's eyes. No siree. She is cool and hot at the same time.

I can't wait till she becomes president, and DougR goes into total meltdown. "Madame President". Oh, I like the ring of that!

Fun, fun, fun. Go Hillary!

Still haven't found any inflatable Hillary dolls. That woman has pull, I tell you. She had them ALL yanked off the market. I mean ALL of them. Not a one to be had. I know. I've looked high and low. They are GONE, baby. Gone.

Hillary Clinton - the best thing since sliced bread, non-stick frying pans, and unwaxed apples. Owoooooooooooo.....!

I love Hilary, and have always found the knee-jerk reactionary hostility to her a comical manifestation of certain feelings of, er, 'anxiety' on the part of her detractors.

When she's elected (by me, among many others), I think she'll be the greatest president since her husband (8 more years of peace $ prosperity? Yes, please)!

I read a comparison between Hillary and Marie Antoinette earlier this week. So many things attributed to Marie are totally untrue, but were added to the greivances of those who ultimately won that war--she was an icon that was villified for many reasons that had nothing to do with her personally, except that she threatened a lot of people by her presence and smarts. I think I read it in the Washington Post Op-Ed page.

Little Hawk- there is a good reason why you haven't found a life size Hillary Clinton doll- nor a Janet Reno doll, nor a Madelyne Allbright doll, nor a William Shatner doll.   May I suggest a Shania Twain or a Stephen Harper doll?   Either way, your gonna get screwed.

Sean Penns said yesterday that he has an Ann Coulter Doll that he uses as a vodoo doll and tortures. Keep playng with dolls Sean.   The left has found its calling.

No, the stuff about her going out with Shatner is just a wild rumour that someone is spreading. Someone who should know better. ;-)

Larry K, you are soooo wrong. No Shatner dolls, you say???? Ha! There are literally millions of action figures and larger figures or all kinds that you can buy of Mr Shatner. They're all over the place. There are standing cardboard life-size Shatners. I've seen one. I grant there are probably no inflatable Shatner dolls...but you didn't say that, you just said "dolls". You are wrong, Larry, wrong. ;-) This must be the 550th time you've been wrong in, oh, your last 600 or so posts. I've been keeping count. I really think you need to do something about your fallibility on this forum. It's getting embarrassing.

Having an Ann Coulter doll around would be just totally creepy. If I had one, I'd get rid of it fast. I'd bury it on public land and do an exorcism afterward. Bad f*ckin' vibes!

Anyway, thanks for all the scintillating comments, folks. Hillary thanks you too.

Loving to Hate Hillary

By Richard Cohen
Saturday, March 25, 2006; 12:00 AM

In order to understand what's going on with Hillary Clinton, it helps to recall a woman who lost her head and therefore her life in 1793: Marie Antoinette. She is probably best remembered as the spoiled princess-cum-queen who said, "Let them eat cake" -- a remark (the "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job" of its day) that would have shown how callous and out of touch she was, if she had ever said it. She did not.

In her own time, though, it was not merely what she supposedly said that defamed her and made her so unpopular, it was also her alleged behavior. She was manufactured into an Austrian-born slut who, as Stefan Zweig put it in his classic biography, was (falsely) "guilty of every crime, every form of moral corruption, every perversion." It was necessary to have someone like her to embody the greed and corruption of the upper classes. It was necessary, in fact, to have a woman because male sexuality is, let's face it, not all that interesting. Contrast her, in fact, with her husband. Louis XVI was king and he, too, died on the guillotine but he, sad fellow, is mostly forgotten.

My feminist credentials have been impeached of late, but whatever I am, I am struck by the Marie Antoinette-ish treatment of Hillary Rodham Clinton. More than 30 books have been written about Clinton, some of them as vituperative and ugly as any written about the late Queen of France. They have questioned Hillary's honesty, sexuality, parenting, wifing and just about everything else. Just as Marie came to personify all that was wrong with the aristocracy, so Hillary has come to personify all that is wrong with Bill, the Democrats, liberals, working women, independent women and women of a certain kind -- which is any kind you don't happen to like. No man could possibly match her in that department -- or departments.

It is, of course, Hillary's very wifeyness that titillates. All wives are mysterious to others (even to their husbands, I suspect) since their relationships to their men are not based on merit, as we know it, or patronage, as we know it, but on love and sex (at first), children (after a while) and then something else. Since we do not know our own marriages, we cannot know anyone else's. This engenders endless speculation about the distribution of power and the importance of pillow talk. (Somehow, it's OK for the unelected Karl Rove to advise Bush, but if Laura did it, some people would go nuts.) Did Nancy Reagan actually tell Ron what to do? What about Eleanor Roosevelt -- especially Eleanor? She was even more vilified than Franklin and all she ever did was go down into a coal mine, invite Marian Anderson to sing on the Mall and make some speeches in that high, squeaky voice of hers. Hardly worth hating, you'd think. But, oh, she was certainly hated.

Hillary, of course, is a very famous and very mysterious wife. We need not enumerate the reasons. They were more or less impeachable. Did she know? How could she not have known? Was she complicit? Is she an enabler? And now that she is a public official in her own right, even more mystery attaches to her. Who is she? What, exactly, are her politics? Is she a Cubs or a Yankees fan?

It's true, of course, that Hillary is widely considered a presidential candidate and so a certain amount of attention is warranted. In the last month alone, though, The New York Times has mentioned her about 60 times compared to 45 for her more senior colleague, Sen. Charles Schumer, the uncrowned (but undisputed) heavyweight champion of publicity until Clinton came along. Some of the Times' stories are merely about her existence -- they say little more than that -- and in this they are similar to those in other papers. It's obvious some people think that Hillary sells newspapers, although as we all know, nothing does anymore.

Some scrutiny of a possible president, even a mere senator, is expected, even required. But for one person to be so loved, so hated, and of such compelling interest -- so much more a celebrity than, say, John McCain -- suggests that more than politics is involved. Like Marie Antoinette, Hillary has emerged as the repository of so many fears, so much dread, such aspirations -- so much good and bad -- that we have to look past her office or her ambitions and suggest, strongly, that something deeply Freudian is at work. It was Freud, after all, who spoke for all men (and many women) by asking, "What do women want?" Now -- some fear, others hope -- we may finally have the answer.

The White House.

Point well made, LH.

Fooling aside, I think Hillary would be a good President. Heaven forbid the US (and the rest of the world) get Condi. The Presidency should not be a gender (please don't everyone go all pedantic about the use of that word) issue. I don't see anyone around the political landscape who has the balls Hillary does. As was remarked above, I think she'd be one helluva lot kinder to the poor in the US than any of your recent administrations have been. And even if that's all she was able to accomplish, it would be one giant step UP from whatcha got and have had recently--and that includes that twit of a husband of hers.

Re:    Geena Davis.

Although what has already been displayed (ahem!) could almost be reason enough, perhaps there are those here who missed a television series that premiered in September of 2005, entitled "Commander-in-Chief," about the first woman president of the United States. Interesting premise:

Presidential candidate Bridges (presumably a Republican, although it's never actually stated) chooses MacKenzie Allen (Geena Davis), an independent, as his running mate over Nathan Templeton (Donald Sutherland) because of her academic expertise in foreign affairs. Shortly after being elected, President Bridges has to undergo brain surgery to remove a tumor, and dies, leaving his V. P., Mackenzie Allen, as his successor. Templeton, who is Speaker of the House, and the rest of the party, rather arrogantly assume that she will resign. After all, she's a) an independent, not actually a member of the elected party, and b) she's a woman (!). Mac thinks the matter over, then says "No." After all, the American people elected Bridges and her, and the Constitution is specific about the line of succession. Templeton is ticked off, and hell-bent on sabotaging her as president. In succeeding episodes, she handles a series of crises, domestic, foreign, and within the White House itself, firmly and brilliantly, often with Templeton trying to subtly yank the rug out from under her (Sutherland's Templeton is a marvelously snaky villain!).

Speaking of yanking, with 16,000,000 viewers watching the show, ABC pulled it from its Tuesday night prime time (8:00 p.m.) schedule just as it won a Golden Globe award—and replaced the hour-long show with two moronic half-hour sit-coms. What, pray tell, goes on in the brains of network executives (if, indeed, they have brains!??). Anyway, as of now (popular demand, apparently), it's scheduled to be re-inserted in the schedule as of April 18th.

I thought it was an excellent series and looked forward to future episodes, as I now do when it resumes. Even though Geena Davis's décolleté (as posted above) is very fetching (it would certainly fetch me!), one should be aware that Ms. Davis has an I. Q. of 140 and is a member of Mensa, and in 1999, she was a contender for a place on the Olympic archery team. She is 6 feet tall. In the power suits she wears as the Commander-in Chief, she is an imposing figure indeed.

Geena Davis is the most Presidential person I have seen on television within recent years.

Observe.

I think the S of the H is third in line for the Presidency in the event the other two kick the bucket. I think Sutherland may still be a Canadian. I think Americans should be worried.

While LH has had you all focused on William Shatner, Donnie Boy has been getting closer and closer to the Oval Office.

BTW, his role in Backdraft (bloody awful movie in terms of firefighting) was really great. That man can command a stage. And he still managed to do it with DeNiro on the set.

And I'm sure you all know about his connection, via his ex-wife Shirley Douglas to the father of medicare in Canada, Tommy Douglas. Shirley by the way continues to be a champion of her father's legacy and is very active in defending universal medicare whenever the drums of privatization start beating.

On a personal note, I used to regularly see Mr. Sutherland at Montreal Expo games where he had season tickets, and can report that he is a very personable and unassuming man for being a Hollywood movie star, he would inevitably be chatting to whoever approached him in the lobby in between innings and after the games and always appeared to be enjoying himself.

By the time Hillary gets to the highest office in the U.S.it will be but a worn out 2nd world nation on the downward slide. Surpassed by the countries they helped rise to power by their own faulty surmise. She will be but an impotent figure in the world theatre.

Peace, I would love to see a slot on the ballot that says, "None of these candidates are acceptable."

Ever read a book entitled First Democracy : The Challenge of an Ancient Idea by Paul Woodruff? Most informative little book. Woodruff explains why the party system almost invariable ends up presenting slated of candidates that represent a very narrow range of positions, and often none that represent what the citizens in general really want. The ancient Greeks knew this and although there were factions, they didn't have official political parties as we do. They chose their public officials in a way that would made being a professional politician next to impossible. And they held their public officials responsible.

Greek democracy was far from perfect, but in some crucial ways, it worked a whole lot better that ours.

The book is a fascinating read.

I think Martin is right, but for different reasons.

The only candidate who will have a chance to defeat the Republicans will be one who

1) did not have an association with being in favour of the Iraq invasion

2) has an economic platform that will address both industry/business interests and the millions of people who live in poverty in the US

I think you got it, Martin.

McCain could easily win the 2008 election because he's never been seen to be a Bush supporter. And truthfully, I don't see any good Democrats on the horizon--not that there aren't any. Matter of profile and public perception.

Here's a good joke for ya, Peace.

A genie wanted to give an Arab who found her in a bottle 3 wishes. He said "I want 3 Infidel American women. Lorena Bobbitt, Tanya Harding, and Hillary Clinton." The next day the Arab was found, suffering terribly. When asked what happened, he responded, " I got my knees broke, my dick cut off, and now I have no health insurance."

Don,

"never said I would vote for Hillary, BB. Don't try to put words in my mouth (ptui!!)."

I never said you did say that- I did quote your question, and thought that MY question was a reasonable response to it.

"But if she's the best of a really bad lot--well, what would you do? C'mon, now. Be honest! "

I usually vote for the lesser of the two evils in Presidential elections- so I would have to see who she was running against. There are a number of possible candidates I would consider to be worse.

Thus, "How can someone say they WOULD vote for Hillary if they don't know who she's running against? " -

I would vote for her under some possible circumstances- UNLIKE most of those here who, on the last election, stated "ANYBODY but Bush."

Agreed, BB. Hillary would definitely not be my pick, but should she be nominated (which I seriously doubt), whether I would vote for her or not depends on who's running against her. We're stiil a couple of years away from the presidential elections, so some interesting things may shake out between now and then.

By the way:

"On my next hunting trip, I'm going to invite Hillary Clinton."
