I seem to got some adware on one of my machines and it's advertising American Express.

Has anyone else seen this? And does anyone know of a fix?

This site states that:
"But consumers who have downloaded ad-supported software on the Internet will quickly notice pop-up ads from Travelocity, Priceline.com, Thrifty, United Airlines, American Express, Honda, DaimlerChrysler and Toyota. Retail companies such as Lancome and L'Oreal are experimenting with the trend, as are technology heavyweights like Microsoft, Oracle, Sprint and Verizon."

So it seems that downloaded software is probably the source of your problem

OK, I read that but my problem seems a little more severe.

The ad for American Express pops up even when I'm disconnected from the internet and it locks up my machine.

I think it climbed aboard when I visited a lyrics web site.

Assuming you're running Windows, see previous thread posting:

Tech: System restore

There are recent links there to where you can get Ad-Aware and Spybot. If you download them, open and update signature files, and run a scan with each of them, it may find the offending crudware.

If you're running WinXP or Win2K, you can also go to microsoft.com and hunt up their "malware remover" which is updated weekly and will remove the most common recent problem stuff. Look for "downloads." Note that this is a "one-shot" program. You need to go back and get the latest version each time you need to run it, and it's not intended to be a "comprehensive-gets-everything" kind of fixer.

Well Spybot, ad-aware and Microsoft's stuff didn't work, so I had to do a backup and then reload the operating system. Bummer!

I hate windows but I have to keep it on one machine because so many users can't read a file unless it's in Word format. You'd amazed at the number of idiots I come across who can't handle a simple text file.
