Subject: Happy! - Mar 31 (Sam Hinton / Johnson) From: Abby Sale Date: 31 Mar 06 - 08:03 AM Happy Birthday! In Tulsa, Oklahoma: marine biologist/collector/singer/harmonica player/folklorist & a few other things (& maybe the only man alive that knows more songs than Utah Philips - some 1200, actually) The really rare Sam Hinton was born 3/31/1917 and retired from public performances April 2002 Autoharper, Adam Miller has written a three hundred page biography of Sam Bio and more ALSO: The first black heavyweight champ (12/26/1908) Jack Johnson was born 3/31/1878 (d.6/10/1946) As we have it, Johnson was refused passage and a wonderful cruise on the Titanic because, said the captain, "I ain't hauling no coal." In the long run Johnson probably didn't mind so much. See Leadbelly's version of the song. Early warning notice: This series of the Happy File noncontinues beginning April 16.
