FYI, if you don't know Desert Island Discs is a long running radio programme (over 60 years now I think) where celebs pick 8 tracks to take with them if they were marooned on a desert island. The also get the complete works or Shakespeare, the Bible (or equivalent) and a luxury (useful items like boats, sea planes etc are banned). So what are yours? Rather than stick to your current favourites choose those which represent phases of your life, friends, relatives etc. Eight only and ONE luxury (although this is flexible ie you could have a bodhran and a beater but not a guitar and a banjo) and one book (again not the complete works of Catherine Cookson!)

Mine are:

Sun Arise - Rolf Harris
Play with Fire - Rolling Stones
Gaudete - Steeleye Span
Pretty Vacant - The Sex Pistols
Baggy Trousers - Madness
Happy Hour - The Housemartins
The Caliph of Bagdad - Ecclesfield Handbell Ringers
Scan Tester's Country Step Dance/Lemmy Brazil's No.2

Book: Flashman and the Redskins - George MacDonald Fraser

Luxury: DG Melodeon - Castagnari

Walking in the Rain - The Ronnettes
Like a rolling stone - Bob Dylan
Positively 4th St - Bob Dylan
Takes a lot to laugh - Bob Dylan
Cyprus Ave. - Van Morrison
Brain Damage/Eclipse - Pink Floyd (I have always regarded this as a single song)
Flight of Earls - Dublin City Ramblers
Khe Sanh - Cold Chisel
Greatest Dream (or any one of several) by Mary Black
All the Great Guns Roar - Rita Connolly
(Ten songs are not enough to represent all the identifiable phases.)

Book - possibly One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey. (Once again, an impossible choice, but I guess that's the point of the excersise isn't it.)

Luxury - Too hard to decide, so I guess I'll make something out of whatever I find when I get there. (Bet you wish you were as confident as that.)

I always give up when I try to work out mine, I would take 8 Louis Armstrong sides before starting on anyone else. The book is easier, one I could re-read for ever: George & Weedon Grossmith's "Diary of a Nobody" always makes me laugh- and it sums me up!

Hmmm, I'm having second thoughts. I think I will swap the Sex Pistols for the Ramones's Rockaway Beach.

Ah, but, the game rules say your luxury item can't be useful (so no axes, or anything else that might help you build a boat to escape). Also, you have to choose which of your 8 record choices you would take if you could only take one.

I was a bit surprised when Sue Lawley allowed a recent guest to choose an I-pod as their luxury item!

But I quite liked Ronald Searle's luxury item of a bottle of champagne - when it was empty, he'd put a note in asking for another bottle of champagne...

It changes every time I do this exercise, and I have thought about it before! At a party recently we had to put our desert island discs on a bit of paper and then guess who everyone was - interesting exercise. Here goes, my DID's for today:

Britten - Young person's guide to the orchestra
Mozart - clarinet concerto
Bob Dylan - ?????? hmm tricky decision here,
Simon and Garfunkel - Wednesday Morning 3am
Peggy Lee - Folks who live on the hill
Witches of Elswick - I once lived in service
The Smiths - What difference does it make
My hubby singing John Spillane's All the way's you wander

Book - War and Peace or something equally hard and long
Luxury - OMG, the first thing I thought of was my teddy bear!!! How sad is that?

Still haven't decided what Bob Dylan to take.....

The disks:
Anything by Ray Charles -- like Mel Lyman said, Ray contains all music.
John Coltrane -- A Love Supreme
Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live (with Johnny Winter and Jerry Portnoy)
Bill Monroe, best of
Rahsaan Roland Kirk -- Dog Years In The Fourth Ring (It's a 3-disk box set -- is that cheating?
Miles Davis -- Kind Of Blue
Charles Mingus In Europe (live set with Eric Dolphy and Jaki Byard)
First demo disk from my current band

Book: A field guide to desert island flora and fauna (publisher unknown). At least, it might give me a handle on what is safe to eat around there. Extra points for the field guide that says everything -- including the plants -- taste like chicken.

Luxury item: OK, I'll fudge here. Harmonica is not a luxury item. Got it? It's a necessity. In fact, I'll probably be playing it while the ship is breaking to pieces (they did that on the Titanic, right?) I am prepared to take this case to the Desert Island Provisioning Authority. If I lose my case, then my belt loaded with harmonicas will be the luxury item. Should I win, then the luxury item will be an ax.
