Subject: happy? - Apr 2 (St. Abb – a good name) From: Abby Sale Date: 02 Apr 06 - 11:26 AM On the links of Beadnell are traces of an ancient chapel dedicated to the excellently named St Ebba, Abbess of Coldingham, one of the three sainted princesses of Northumbria ALSO: Berwickshire, Scotland, 870 (feast is April 2). According to 13th century writer Matthew Paris, the sole source, the Danes martyred her with the whole community even though she attempted to buy a reprieve by mutilating her own face. (Paris also provided the source material for the gentle ballad c.1827, "Halbert the Grim" which some time later provided the inspiration for the cowboy epic, "Blood on the Saddle.") (Hmmm – blood on the saddle... Reminds me. I'll be first trying out me brand new Rollerblades today. 90 mm wheels! Wheee!) Subject: RE: happy? - Apr 2 (St. Abb – a good name) From: Purple Foxx Date: 02 Apr 06 - 02:20 PM Though one of the less well known Northumbrian Saints,Ebba is not entirely forgotten. There is still a priory at Coldingham & Ebb's Nook in Northumberland & Ebchester in County Durham are both reputedly named for her. In addition to which St Ebba's Church in Beadnell (Northumberland)is dedicated to her. |
Subject: RE: happy? - Apr 2 (St. Abb – a good name) From: Scotus Date: 02 Apr 06 - 09:04 PM Coldingham is, of course, pronounced Cowdenyam - and is near the wonderful town of Eyemouth, which hosts an excellent annual folk festival and the Herring Queen festivities. Great pubs and a famous fish and chip shop. Jack |
