Subject: Lyr Add: HALF A MILLION MILES (The Kennedys)

Heard this on the radio today, and liked it so much I thought I ought to share.

HALF A MILLION MILES
Pete Kennedy & Maura Kennedy

It was a rainy night in Texas. The river was runnin' high.
Anyone with any sense was inside stayin' dry.
The rain came down like hammered gold and rendered all things new,
Like a Colorado overflow down Congress Avenue.

CHORUS: Round, round, ten trav'lin' years is a mighty long, long while
When the long road stretches out ahead a half a million miles.

In a funky rock-'n'-roll bar, a man and a woman sat,
While the rain poured down with a dim deep sound, but they paid no mind to that.
They talked about the old songs. They wrote one that was new.
They sang it to Roy Orbison and Ricky Nelson, too. CHORUS

When the sun come up next mornin' on the sinners and the saved,
A pickup headed down the road toward Buddy Holly's grave.
In the lonesome town of Lubbock, where Buddy's homestead lay,
Their hearts were cut with diamonds on that strange and fateful day. CHORUS TWICE

[Sung by The Kennedys on "Half a Million Miles," Appleseed CD #1090, 2005. The Kennedys are a married couple. The song supposedly describes their first date ten years earlier. It was a visit to Buddy Holly's grave. Hey, anything's romantic if you're motivated enough.

[You can hear the radio program that contains this song. Go to this page, find the heading that says "Wednesday, April 5, 2006," and click on the first link right below it. The song begins 27 minutes and 4 seconds from the beginning of the program.

[Here's The Kennedys' web site.]
