It varies. Not children. Can't stand them til they're old enough to argue philosophy with.

It varies at different times. Being among people I love and trust, and having some good activities to focus on...that certainly can do it.

I agree with Little Hawk. There isn't just ONE thing, and nothing is constantly fulfilling. Having said that, there are certainly times when I witness something or some development or attribute in my child that brings a sense of fulfillment. Digging in the dirt, watching plants thrive, harvesting vegetables can do that. Watching a client discover their own strengths and learn the skills and strategies they need to have more satisfying lives and relationships can be extremely satisfying. Being in good voice and singing by myself in the moonlight, lazing on the beach in the middle of my relaxed, extended family, or sitting in the woods under a big tree in the soft spring light filtered through the emerging canapy, all these things can lead to a strong sense of being very much in the moment and at peace.

Fulfilled? Seeing that my influence has been meaningful and beneficial, for one. But first, I do have to make that so ...

A lotta things...

#1: Solvin' a tough case, puttin' the cuffs on the bad guys, and gettin' paid by the grateful clients!

#2: A good stiff drink and a high quality cigar.

#3: Good company, along with #2, and talkin' shop.

#4: A good lookin' dame with really looooong legs!

#5: The respect of my peers.

#6: A good meal in a greasy spoon.

#7: Dancin' with my sweetie of the hour.

#6: Oilin' my tommy gun.

#7: Playin' practical jokes on people and gorillas.

#8: Makin' a fool out of a gorilla for the 2nd time. (Mother Nature did it the first time!)

Any and all of those. I admit that #7 and #8 are sorta the same thing.

I would be placing an unfair burden on my loved ones if I depended on them for my happiness and fulfillment. Although my son and my husband are the greatest sources of many good things in my life, including joy.

But the little things are important, too. Today, the beautiful weather and the sounds of nature all around me while I worked outside, and the satisfaction of getting getting the job done were a part of what made this day a good one for me overall.

Gee, Jack: Not to be caught agreeing with Martin or nuthin' but I think he's absolutely right... and I don't find it insulting. There is certainly more than one thing in my life that I find fulfilling, or that makes me "happy." I suspect that's the case with you too, Jack. I'm with Bill, too. I love working with wood, although I haven't done much in recent years, other than a little carpentry. I love the feel of wood, and responding to the grain. I get great fulfillment in carving wood, making small, playful sculptures or musical instruments. Playing instruments certainly is fulfilling, as is singing with others. I find a lot of happiness on the Cat (along with the occasional frustration and irritation that we all feel.) And that's just for starters. I bet you could come up with a pretty good list yourself, Jack.

All the best..

Jerry

What is wrong with that statement?

I'm sure if anyone of us was told we had 24hrs of life left ... it would be more than the 'one joy' we would wish for.

Thanks, Jerry. To have just one passion in life is truly limiting. Family, friends, music, work, music, a good hobby, other creative outlets..............

I wonder why Jack finds that insulting and provoking? I do have a good feeling why, though.

Jack, I uderstand that Martin may have upset or hurt you at some time. But we really do try and start anew with each thread here. And his comment about needing more than one thing in life wasn't hurtful, or demeaning to anyone.

let's try and keep this thread a happy ship, Jack.

as to the thread, somehow I am irresistably reminded of the old song; it's illegal , it's immoral or it makes you fat.

Occasionally I find a book, usually a crime novel that really ignites my interest, really entertains me, and I dread finishing it, because I know the pleasure will be over.

I used to like entertaining old folks. I was good at it. but I'm not well enough to do it any more. this other stuff in folk clubs is okay - but I miss the almost spiritual aspect of giving people music, people for whom there are no radio stations and as a consequence of them having no financial clout in our community, they have not anybody else really trying to make contact and remind them about life.

I used to love drinking with friends, but enjoyment in that, petered out. I haven't touched the stuff for 3 years now. To tell you the truth, that's my most fulfilling thing....being sober. Knowing that if I get mood swings, its nothing to do with that shit.

all the best
to all

For goodness sake Jack, go away. I came onto this thread thinking it would be a good one....not much cause for unpleasantness. Everything was fine until I started reading your posts. What is WRONG with you? I agree entirely with Martin...it's what I was thinking of saying myself, or something like. A totally uncalled for personal attack as far as I can see, and if any posts should be deleted it's yours. Then perhaps we can get back to what started as a rather pleasant thread. I was going to post my happinesses, but I won't bother now. One BIG annoyance however, is people who muck up perfectly good threads

Love Lynne

Getting back to the topic at hand..

I feel a distinction between "happy" and "joyful." "Happy is like chinese food... wonderful for the moment, but doesn't last long enough. Ephemeral. Now, Joyfulness... that's another deal entirely. Think of the use of the words. You can get a Happy
Meal at McDonald's. Then think of The Ode To Joy. "Fulfilled" is on a different plane, too. Some things make me happy AND joyful and are fulfilling. Most likely, it involves someone else's joy and happiness as well.

Bringing music to old folks and the sick and shut-in is all three, for me.

Strangely enough I was thinking some of the things mentioned would make me very unhappy.

Meditation - I don't like the sound of that at all. I think I would get depressed very quickly and start thinking about how unfulfilled I was, generally what a fuck up I've made of life.

No.......lights, camera, action......every time.

Any tiny iota of progress when I practice music (I'm gonna learn to fiddle if it kills me).

Square dancing until I know I won't be able to move the next day.

I used to get a lot of satisfaction out of my job back when I was a vet tech. It's a grunt job and it pays accordingly, but there were a lot of things that, in retrospect, I can't believe I helped pull off. A lot of little animals that are still alive. I work in a library now and it pays better, has benefits, has opportunities, but it doesn't give you the same feeling that you get when you find a two-day-old kitten on the doorstep and hand-raise the little bugger until you can adopt him out.

" Martin": 10 April 7:51 AM:      "Can anyone trust such a person?" (who makes a PM public)

Pobre cito. You're breaking my heart.

I disagree on Private Messages. Obviously they were set up for one on one communication, usually, I would guess, to convey information the group would have no interest in. If, however, "Martin" did send the PM to Jack that Jack cited, it was obviously intended to hurt.

There is no sanctity in a PM intended to hurt the recipient. And the sender of such a PM should be prepared to have it made public.

Simple solution: don't send PM's intended to hurt.

But if you do, spare us the hypocritical whining when they are made public.

I would never reveal the content of a PM from a Mudcat friend. However, if somebody is attacked, either in a thread or a PM, it's up to that individual to respond---or not. Either by PM or publicly.

If the PM is revealed and the group has no interest, there's another simple solution for the group----ignore it.

GUEST Ron Davies. So you believe that in 'private' conversation, any one person who is abused should go tell another. It happens in peoples personal and business lives. We all choose how to react to abuse but I don't believe we should go crying to others unless there is a law being broken or we are too weak ourselves and need to whinge to someone to get protection or help. If you decide as a result of this to PM me with some abuse...go ahead but I would would certainly not stoop to the level of divulging your private insults to me.
It is part of the 'Martin Gibson' character to be insulting. If you don't like it..."Get over it or get out of the kitchen" I say.

Ron doesn't have the balls or the skin to deal with it. Obviously either does Jack. whining is a part of their nature.

ron, you snivel and hurt here all the time in the wide open and so does Jack and so do I and so do others.

Revealing private PMs not for the forum is FORUM ABUSE, something which Jack did and you support, ronnie baby ol' pal, ol' girlieman.

I don't care if I break your heart, Ron Davies. But it is just so easy to bust your balls.

"GUEST Ron Davies.
Best wishes, Mike.

___________________________________________________

What Martin seems to be crying about is Martin's supposed expectation of privacy.

If one sends, profane and insulting message to another, they have no expectation that these be kept in confidence. Certianly if you got a piece of Spam in an email and posted it here as a warning to avoid the offending business. Many would take that as a service. That you do not see it as a service to be warned about an offensive Mudcatter is certainly your you right. But why try to discourage other of that benefit?

How is it Forum abuse to tell other forum members that they are getting spam form another member? Wouldn't FORUM ABUSE be more like sniping at someone then hiding behind the rules whenthey reply. Did you used to hit your little sister then go crying to mom when they hit you back?

Congratulations, courageous "Martin"--

You maintain your almost perfect record of stupid vulgar nonsense. Are all the graduates of your charm school as delightful as your good self? Perhaps that explains the decline in enrollment.

I repeat:   if you send a PM attacking someone, it is not sacred and you have no cause to complain if it's made public.

I think Jack's analogy of cockroaches fits well--neither cockroaches nor vulgar attackers are likely to appreciate light.

So stop whining about the heinous crime of revealing your PM.

I have never sent a PM attacking anybody, nor will I ever.   And I stand behind everything I say --with my own name.

If you'd climb out of the gutter--and stay out-- you wouldn't have to be afraid of revealing yours.

It's actually a shame this thread, like so many others, has been hijacked.

To return to the topic:

One of the things that really makes me happy is to teach somebody something, especially something like teaching a child how to recognize birds just by their call--without seeing them. Maybe it's when they realize they can do it themselves--and you realize you've passed on some knowledge--not earthshaking, but fun--and it helps their confidence.

Just for the record: If I were to receive an unsolicited PM that was abusive or threatening or otherwise over the top I wouldn't hesitate to do something about it, whether it was to send it to Joe Offer or to make it public. It is the same thing as finding it in your mailbox at home.

An unsolicited message is not conversation.

And just for the record, as this thread unfortunately sems to have gone to Hell in a handbasket, some of the most insulting, hurtful PMS that I've recieved contained nary an obscenity and came from a couple of Catters who present themselves on threads as ever so thoughtful and non-judgmental. I resent obscenities as much as anyone, but sometimes the most hurtful things in life are said with hands folded.

Don't feel badly gnu... you started this thread with a good heart. I appreciate that very much.. maybe some other time we can have this discussion without it devolving into charge and countercharge. This thread brings back memories of "I'm telling MOM!" and "He hit me FIRST!"

Wow. Jerry, you have a way of expressing a thought that is marvelous: "sometimes the most hurtful things in life are said with hands folded."

Do you write? If you don't, you should. If you do, please direct me to it! (I know you write songs)

Among the things that make me happy is being present at the birth of a creative act. I love hearing a new song or a story or a book in progress.

Thanks Ebbie... nah I just write what comes to mind and heart. For me, it's best not to be too self-conscious about writing.

Thinking about this thread makes me realize that we all have two choices in life: To try to bring out the best in others, or to try to bring out the worst. Martin has chosen to try to drive others to say and do things that are not a part of their true character. He takes pride in upsetting people enough to bring them to respond in kind. The choice we make depends on how we see others (and ourselves.) If you see others as basically hypocritical, dishonest and weak, you will do everything you can to "expose" them for their true nature. Sadly, all you do is expose your own nature.

If you see others as of great value and basic goodness, you will encourage them and praise them for their good acts. In the process, you challenge yourself to become a better person.

Hatred begets hatred, judgment begets judgment. And sometimes, judgment begets love.

Jerry

so what? It is a riot to contantly yank your chain. You are quite possibly the most judgemental fool here, and please realize how much time and energy you have wasted over me.

To know that you have wasted such time and energy over me makes me happy and fulfilled.

And ron, I could care less what make you happy. and I am not complaining that Jack exposed a PM from me that was so heartfelt and sincere. By him exposing it, he made a bigger fool out of himself and showed that he will run to his Mommy instead of handling his own problems.

I think the only reason anyone attacks you is because they feel that innate sense to defend themselves from your attacks. Odd thing, though. Your attacks are mostly humourless, childish and inane. You seldom offer anything with any insight, intelligence, comedy... well, you offer nothing, really. Just attacks. Many vulgar. It's kinda like a small child who wants attention and only knows how to scream and be obnoxious. Like a child that had a mother who was so stunned she could not impart any reality or common sense or love. So sad that you hate your own mother so bad that you disgrace her with your vitriol.

Come back for more, Ron

I know that you enjoy it. As far as sewer dwelling, I don't think so. Not with this spread.

Hey everyone! watch Ron Davies be offended daily and rag about it. It gets to him so much that it feels good and he keeps coming back for more. I just can't pity someone as sick as he is for doing so.

"Martin"--

Too bad you have no imagination--seems like we've heard the sum total of your "thoughts" many times.

But, as I said, if gutter life is what you like, be our guest--as you know, Mudcat's only purpose is to make you happy, even if your obsessions bore thinking beings--that is, everybody but you.

And don't be afraid--I won't send a PM attacking you, even after I get around to retrieving my cookie. Attacking somebody in a PM seems to be your style--then, of course, whining when the PM is made public.   (Rather pathetic, to say the least.) I do neither of those.

I prefer to let you know exactly what I think directly--and in the open. And with my own name.

It's called backbone. Looks like you'll never have it.

Sweet dreams.

Of course he did, Michelle. He does it every time.

And , ron, I didn't complain about Jack showing the PM I sent him. It did him more harm to him than me to show it and has now set most of the low tone on this board, along with his and Carol's tyrade of guest posting personal attack threads that Joe has admonished. I'll admit I am no angel, but I have not once seriously called for any one to be banned because of disagreements or philosophical differences.

So, the prigs who think they are better than everyone else and who get sooooooooooo offended, are the ones who just might be at the root of a lot of problems here.

b. Full of a comfortable feeling of superiority to the masses of my fellow-men.

c. Delicately and unceasingly amused according to my taste." -- H. L. Mencken

The insults and acrimony that unfortunately have been a part of this thread remind me why I became a non-member. A great pity. What makes me happy and fulfilled? What I've mentioned in this thread has reminded me: having good supportive friends who are there through good and bad, who are forgiving, do not judge hastily, and do not ruin their own lives and others' by bearing petty grudges.
