Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Apr 06 - 08:16 PM You are so right. And here is his epic The Ballad of the White Horse |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: greg stephens Date: 10 Apr 06 - 05:59 AM "My attitude to progress has changed from antagonism to boredom" Just thought I'd include that gem from the site, to encourage anyone having a glance at the thread to go in and have a read. What a brilliant collection of quotes, I have just had a very happy time bowssing through.. Bert, thank you very much for drawing this to our attention. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: John O'L Date: 10 Apr 06 - 06:35 AM That guy was a 'Catter ahead of his time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: Purple Foxx Date: 10 Apr 06 - 06:46 AM Let's not forget that Chesterton was Profascist & openly Antisemitic. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: greg stephens Date: 10 Apr 06 - 06:55 AM true enough, but I'd hate to cut myself off from enjoyment of his writings because of it. Think of Yeats,Wodehouse,Shaw, HG Wells, Ewan McColl. All with some pretty horrible political skeletons in their closets, but all worth a bit of attention in spite of it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: John O'L Date: 10 Apr 06 - 07:02 AM I wasn't aware of his politics, in fact I wasn't aware of him at all until just now, but there are many 'Catters with whom I disagree most emphatically, but whose posts I read with pleasure. Actually, what I was thinking when I made that post was how self-opinionated he was. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: greg stephens Date: 10 Apr 06 - 07:12 AM The original crusty old curmudgeon, a persona he developed pretty young, I think. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: Purple Foxx Date: 10 Apr 06 - 08:41 AM Good responses John & Greg. Political Compass (www.politicalcompass.org) have a very informative quiz on this kind of disparity. They also have an analysis of the political positions of famous composers. I know there has been a thread here before on this subject (now closed) nevertheless it's well worth a visit. PF Economic Left/Right -7.13 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian -5.79. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: John O'L Date: 10 Apr 06 - 09:30 AM Economic Left/Right: -7.88 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.41 I seem to have similar ideas to Nelson Mandela. You, Purple Foxx, seem to think more like the Dalai Lama. I guess I'm pretty happy with that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: Purple Foxx Date: 10 Apr 06 - 09:31 AM The Dalai Lama?!?!?!?! |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: John O'L Date: 10 Apr 06 - 09:39 AM On the results page, further down, there is a graph plotting the positions of several famous people. Unfortunately, as I've just found, if you want to see it you'll have to do the test again. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: John O'L Date: 10 Apr 06 - 09:50 AM No you don't have to! Go the home page and click 'Analysis'. On that page click 'View The Analysis'. Scroll right down. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: GUEST,Paul Burke Date: 10 Apr 06 - 10:22 AM -6.38, -4.77, so I'm on a similar vector but a little inboard of you two. But I could have done with a click between "agree" and "disagree" for some questions. And others I thought were phrased rather strangely, as if to force an answer- there were several that asked "is" questions, where to answer is to state about matters of fact, rather than "ought" questions. I notice from elsewhere on the site that the only UK party in the same quadrant is the Green Party. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: Purple Foxx Date: 10 Apr 06 - 10:28 AM The "disparity quiz" I mentioned is called Iconochasms. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chesterton quotes From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Apr 06 - 02:04 PM I came in as: Economic Left/Right: -7.63 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.10 Very much the same as John -I'm evidently a bit further left, and a shade less libertarian. I kept on wanting to disagree with the question, as having excluded my view by the way it was phrased. I suspect Chesterton would have had similar problems - for example coming up against a question like "Our race has many superior qualities, compared with other races" he'd have been likely to object that it needed to be accompanied by one saying "Other races have many superior qualities, compared with our race", with the option of agreeing with both of them. |

But the men of the clique live together because they have the same kind of soul, and their narrowness is a narrowness of spiritual coherence and contentment, like that which exists in hell." -- "On the Institution of the Family" (1906) "The best way that a man could test his readiness to encounter the common variety of mankind would be to climb down the chimney into any house at random, and get on as well as possible with the people inside. And that was essentially what each one of us did on the day that he was born." -- Ibid. --- Joe Fineman joe_f@verizon.net ||: If you handle other people's money, you must pay yourself well to protect yourself from the temptation to steal. :|| |
