Proveniences, not providences ... must have had a measure (Maß) beyond my thirst.

I think "GUEST,baffled", back in '06, was well aware that he was quoting from a phonetic oktoberfest songbook, and wanted to test whether he could fool us (in particular Investigator Seppl Angebot).

What, then, could be funnier than an oktoberfest in Canberra, ACT, with genuine First Australians and New Australians of all providences wearing green Chinese plastic hats for 2 A$? To be sure, those books are now sold in Munich as well, also printed in Japanese Katakana script. The Phoenicians once stood at the cradle of written communication, here we see it being drowned in beer.

BTW: The German text about the three-pointed hat has its history as well, google it if you're interested.

Prost!

I'm learning as well while googling:

Ich lag im Bett und schwitzte

is a German song I dind't know before also sung to this tune. It is roughly a German equivalent to

Maids when you're young never wed an old man

only much more explicit.

Wolfgang

Long before Paganini played variations of that tune and called them "Carnival of Venice" this was known as "O cara mama mia", a folksong from Northern Italy. But without Paganini, the tune may never have become so well known that several German lyrics have been pinned to it.

In addition to "Mein Hut der hat drei Ecken" I know

Ein Mops kam in die Küche
und stahl dem Koch ein Ei,
da nahme der Koch den Löffel
und schlug den Mops entzwei.

Da kamen viele Möpse
und gruben ihm ein Grab
und setzen drauf ein Grabstein,
darauf geschrieben stand:

Restart with verse 1 (an example of a never ending song, one could drive parents or scoutmasters to despair by doing this)

Or:
Mein Schatz, der heißt Pauline
und dem bin ich so gut
und wenn ich was verdiene
so kauf ich ihr ´nen Hut.

David Garrett playing variations to O cara mamma mia

Wolfgang

Actually, it's Phonetician, a language closely related to Phoenician.

The dialect of those lyrics is reserved to the current season, mainly used in remote areas of the USA, Canada, Australia etc.. The native speakers wear plastic Tyrol hats, drink a yellow fermented sauce and perform their Aboriginal dances on tables and chairs ...

I was told by a German Elvis impersonator I met in the North Foreland (pub) in Rochester that it is a German nursery rhyme.

It's macaronic rendition of that beloved Sudetenland ballad "My hut, dear hut, amid dry bracken".

Subject: Lyr Add: MEIN HUT, DER HAT DREI ECKEN
From: Joe Offer
Date: 10 Apr 06 - 12:20 AM

Hi, Baffled -
I think it was a standard in first-year German class:

Mein Hut, der hat drei Ecken,
Drei Ecken hat mein Hut;
Und hätt er nicht drei Ecken
Dann wäre er auch nicht mein Hut.

My hat, it has three corners,
Three corners has my hat;
And had it not three corners,
Then it would not be my hat.

Brings back old memories. I think it was 1963 that I learned that song, as a sophomore in high school in Milwaukee. Where'd you hear it?

Came across this "lyric". Don't know if it's Welsh, Gaelic or Phoenician. Can anyone help?

Mine hoot dare hut dry acken
Dry acken hut mine hoot
Oont hat air nicked dry acken
Dun vare air nicked mine hoot
