Nothing in sunny Manchester eather!
It was my understanding that people in that era just made up a second name to differentiate them from all the others with the same fore name! Usualy this was a place or occupation. A Shiver is a type of crack in a long piece of wood "siver me timbers",so it could have been a nickneme given to a carpinter.

I understand the spelling issue. Even my family spells the name with or without the final 's'. It's only that my most remote certifiable ancestor spelled it without the 's' so I thought I'd start there.

Spelling is of almost no relevance in surnames. My mother's maiden name of Stapleford is also spelled Stableford. My Grandfather always spelled it with the 'P' but his brother always used the 'b' and that was well into the 20th century. Dpn't forget that universal (almost) literacy is a very recent thing. In the past, even those who could read and write often used the skills very little and many people would spell phonetically. Witness how bad a lot of people's spelling is these days!

Well, Shambles, the usual story goes that a fellow named Chevre, (Goat Cheese?)came to the Ireland and then England with William of Orange. Afterwhich, education and spelling being what they were, the name Chevre transmogrified into Chever, cheevers, and perhaps Shiver(s)as well. Of course no one knows.

Yes, I've had the Chivers products and those folks and Cheevers may all be somehow related (as we're all related, in the end (?).

Our name appears as Shiver (no 'S' at the end) uniquely in 1750 or in a land grant in South Carolina. I'm taking a shot that the family story of two brothers of that name arrived, either from Ireland or England and wound up in SC is accurate and they could spell(?!).

I suspect the name Chivers derives from the villages adjacent, but situated on opposite sides of the railway line, of Higher Cheever and Lower Cheever.

Closest Edinburgh has is shivas and chivas, one of each. No great use there.

There do notseeem to be any Shivers in the Cumbrian or Stoke-on-Trent phone books. It does exist as a Christian name though, the famous pirate Shiver Matimbers.

I do qualify to answer, because I was English for the first half of my life. Never knew a Shivers, though.
Chivers, Scriveners, yes, but no-one in the Auckland NZ phone book of exactly that spelling. Chivers rhymes with shivers (trembles), by the way, and not some-one who harvests chives.

All the other names starting with Shi.. look oriental.

Mudcat friends, I have a request. If you know of or have heard of someone with my surname, SHIVER,(spelled that way) somewhere in the UK, please give me whatever info you can about them. After many years of research we been unable to connect the US families named Shiver who arrived here from somewhere before 1735. We know about the supposed derivation of the name from Chevre in France to Cheever(s). There are folks named Shivers who have made connections with the UK, and we know spellings may vary, but there seem to have been folks named Shiver in Ireland and England at one time.

But are they still there somewhere? If I could contact someone of that name who has done some research...well you see.
