"WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY THE GUITAR?"
Pat Donohue - lyric
(to the tune of "Swinging on a Star")

Would you like to play the guitar
Carry money home in a jar
From a coffeehouse or a bar
Or would you rather get a job?

A job is the thing that makes you get out of bed
And work every day until you're dead
Your back is achin' and your brain is numb
And you just can't wait until the weekend comes
But if you don't want to starve or beg or rob
You're gonna have to get a job

Or would you like to play the guitar
Drive for miles and miles in your car
And pretend that you're a big star
Or would you rather book the gig?

An agent's the guy who takes his twenty percent
What he says isn't always what he meant
He'll clean you out in ways you never thought
Because he's good at business and he knows you're not
And then he'll sue if you ever make it big
'Cause he's the guy who booked the gig

Or would you like to play the guitar
For a living - har-dee-har-har
I'll admit it's kind of bizarre
Or would you rather be the wife

The wife is the one who has to rescue our butts
She's either a saint or else she's nuts
She gets impatient and she gets annoyed
'Cause she's the one who must remain employed
And, by the way, if you want to wreck your life
Become a guitar player's wife

'Cause all the monkeys aren't in the zoo
They can be trained to play guitar, too
Some do a whole lot better than you
But even if you don't go far
You could be worse off than you are
At least you're playing your guitar

I'll betcha this song is going to appear in the next issue of the newsletter of the San Francisco Folk Music Club. They have new song editors, and they're doing a great job. As you might have guessed, our Barbara is one of those song editors.

Thanks for the plug and the compliment, Joe, but the next issue deadline is already past and gone. Maybe the one after that, unless Faith uses it for Sing Out instead.
Blessings,
Barbara

I don't know what took me so long but I've just recently been performing this one and have been receiving excellent audience response.

Thanks for posting this Barbara, and Pat you're one heck of lyric twister.

Who can I contact about putting this on one of my next recordings? Have you got any contact info for Pat?

Reggie Miles

Here's an interesting true story. Mike Agranoff, a fine New Jersey performer, also found good audience response to this song, so he decided to record it for his most recent CD. It wasn't until he had already printed the graphics that he remembered he hadn't gotten all of his licenses. When he requested a mechanical license for "Would You Like to Swing on a Star" he was turned down. He believed that a parody did not require any special license. The owner of the copyright said the song is not a true parody, i.e. a spoof or the original, but simply a song that used the tune. Mike felt he might have had a case in court, but he doesn't have money for a lawyer. He dropped the song from his CD, but it is still titled "Or Would You Rather Get a Job." Some composers just have no sense of humor.

I wouldn't have thought that what was or was not a parody could be a matter of opinion, not when there are such obvious parallels with the original as in this case - it is not just using the tune.

It is a pity that the owner of the copyright can block the recording, but that doesn't stop the singing of the song - it is a great song to sing but the fact that it is a parody is not lost on those who hear it, and they seem to enjoy putting in 'do de do do's at the end of lines.

Anne

It seems Pat Donohue was frightened off as well, since he appears never to have recorded the song.

Read the full story of Mike Agranoff's encounter with the copyright holder here.

Hi All,

Ray Frank here, another of the San Francisco Folk Music Club's newsletter song page editors. Barbara graciously turned me onto this grand song last year (ok, maybe 2 or 3 years ago!). I wanted to run it then but lack of permission stopped the project.

These days I sing it at every opportunity. Thanks Barb!

I can't think of anything Alan Sheran did that would qualify as a parody under that definiton.

I heard Pat sing this on Prairie Home Companion once, but no one with the complete absence of humor exhibited by the Grand Consortium of Preventers and Property Protectors would listen to that show, so HE's safe, at least.:)

There's a DVD called "The Guitar Artistry of Pat Donohue" which contains WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY THE GUITAR.

You can see that portion at YouTube.

Pat Donahue wrote another great one entitled (something like) "Sitting in the Basement Trying to Play Like Chet". Brilliant.
