This blatant publicity for an organisation I support.

If you fancy taking a 5 night voyage on a real tallship & being entertained by / encouraged to sing by Kimbers Men and Bosuns Call then you might like to sign up to this voyage from the Tall Ships Youth Trust (previously known as the STA) on the brig 'Stavros S Niachos'. It starts at Portsmouth (UK) on 23rd June and you disembark 5 nights later at Brixham, Devon. Don't take the 'Youth' part of the name too literally - this trip is open to anyone aged 18 to 75. As well as singing (assisted by the guests) you'll work as a trainee crew member on this purpose built sail training ship. No previous experience is necessary & the voyage fee of £449 includes full board and opportunities to climb the masts, pull on ropes, play with the sails, steer etc. For futher info see http://www.tallships.org/documentNews.asp?cat=520&doc=7159 or browse the whole TSYT website at www.tallships.org

Thanks for that Terry. TSYT don't know very much about singing (they're more about yoof development) so before I publicised this trip I Googled KM & BC and was pleased to see their pedigree. Neil Kimber is quoted in the publicity article:

Neil Kimber, founder member of Kimber's Men and tall ship sailor, said "I first sailed on the tall ships in 2002 and really enjoyed the voyage. I met some fantastic people and it was so evocative sitting on deck, with the wind in the sails, the waves under the bow and the crew sitting together just singing songs. Singing brings everyone together and with no TV or radio to distract you it's a great form of entertainment. You could really imagine yourself back 200 years ago, swabbing the decks and plying the trans-Atlantic tea routes!"

Neil said: "Sea Shanties and Tall Ships just go together - so I'm really looking forward to performing onboard. People don't have to worry about being able to sing - it has been said that sea shanties were sung in unison to keep sailors working in time and the majority of seamen couldn't even sing in tune! I'm sure it will the same today so the emphasis will definitely be on having fun".
