I just went to the BBC Radio 2 website Folk section and went on to the Virtual Session. I thought it was a great idea and well executed but I was horrified to find the tunes all played by an "Irish Style" band with all the typical highly mannered decoration. It was of no interest to me whatsoever. I was looking for some British "Village Band" music untainted by the all-pervasive celtic thing. I was disappointed.

There is an absolute wealth of excellent British stuff from all parts of these islands without having the BBC representing the quasi Celtic/Irish thing as the only thing.

It may be that my timing is bad and I missed all the Shetland stuff or the Morris tunes and just happend on the site when it was "Irish Week".

I wondered if any other catters had visited this site and had any similar experiences or reactions before I write and complain.

Heavens above! = (#@:~%$) It is hard enough to get people to believe that there is good English session music without things like this.

You can get to the BBC virtual session at

HERE

Cheers

It is the same old session tune set as originally recorded. For God's sake don't get the BBC to replace it with shirtlifter Morris music. Karen Tweed's quasi Celtic/Irish thing is fine by me.

The is no harm in asking the BBC for some additional session styles - but there is no need for the original ones to be taken off. Some more tunes in addition to these would be a good idea.

Skipjack

I assume by "shirtlifter Morris music" you mean Over the Hills and Far Away which we use for a morris dance, it was written by Thomas Gay. If my assumtion is not correct I could offended if I could be bothered

Thanks, Old Roger, for the link. I am at this moment, enjoying the Maid behind the Bar (!) and looking foreward to others. This is better than lots of sessions I have been to, especially for learning new tunes, and also they don't play too wicked fast!

I just hope that the authorities don't catch up with me. Listening to this content without paying tax or getting a zoning variance is clearly illegal many places.
