Subject: SURVEY: How many post to Mudcat ONLY?
From: GUEST
Date: 15 Apr 06 - 11:42 AM

I know this has been done before, but I don't think it's been done since the advent of blogs, the rise of Wiki, etc.

I know at one time, many Mudcat regulars claimed only to use this online forum. Well, they've now been online awhile and I expect may have gotten bored enough to go exploring the wild side of the web.

I ask this, because I'm guessing a lot of people have "branched out".

Yeah or Nay?

Actually, I should have been more clear. I didn't mean surfing. I meant to ask how many of you post and/or visit other online chat forums, blogs, Wiki type places, that sort of thing. Places where you have the ability to easily talk with and interact with other cyber space folk.

I am suspicious of someone not using their own name and trying to conduct an opinion poll for no given reason, and feel that it could be used either for or against this site.
I therefore want to know who you are, and why you require this information.

you would get a MUCH better response if you would simply adopt a NAME for the sake of easier communication.

It make no difference why some feel like this small courtesy is an imposition on their sense of ....whatever....but the fact remains that total anonymity is considered less than considerate..

suit yerself...

Well, you aren't going to find out who I am, but truly, I'm just curious. Used to be, most regulars here only came and posted here. I'm guessing that has changed, but may well be wrong about it. Unlike many here, being wrong doesn't trouble me much, as my identity as a human being isn't any more linked to being right than it is to having an internet identity.

You can participate in the survey or not. Doesn't matter. I did it on a whim. The thread will become whatever people here make it become. I'm not worried about that either.

Pretty soon, I'll be done with breakfast, tea & emails and I'll be out enjoying the day. Maybe I'll get back to check the results this weekend, maybe not. If others are curious and want to particpate, fine. If others choose to make the thread about anonymous guest posting, go for it.

♫ "Home, home on the Mudcat..." ♫

I've joined and briefly participated in other forums (on other interests), but got tired of the design, slow speed, and less-evolved state of the membership. I didn't really like the added features many of them had (self-edit, etc.), although I enjoyed looking at them to see how they worked. I found the admins/mods tended to be less satisfactory too, for various reasons.

GUEST, what I'm about to say is a serious inquiry, no smart-assedness intended.

Since you say you choose not to share your identity on the WWW, and since you say you post to a number of forums, I'd be interested in knowing how common it is for forums to allow totally anonymous posting? Seems like every forum I've ever been to other than this one requires that one become a member before being allowed to post. Most of them allow viewing by non-members, but posting by members only. Maybe I've just not found the others which allow guest posting. Could you, perhaps, provide a link or two?

Taken at face value, bee dub.

Yes, the other forums I use I provide a regular user name, and are member only.

No, I won't give you links or any other information about them, because I don't want Mudcatters stalking me online.

Too many unbalanced people here (especially your beloved demonic moderators) for me to give out personal information like that in this forum.

I use a number of different user names online, but I have learned not to ever use my real name as a user name in forums, newsgroups, etc. People I want to know my true identity, know it. Those I don't want to know it, for the most part, don't.

Some do, some don't. I post elsewhere much more frequently.

I really wish that many members here were not so allergic to the idea of namelessness. Post traumatic stress syndrome is not the fault of every guest, only of the ones who used to make trouble, and that was years ago. So members, lighten up. Sometimes you don't need an "identity" in order to communicate, yeesh. Max allows it, deal with it rather than bitching at every new guest and making all us members look horribly cliqueish.

Ever heard of hospitality? Or of innocent until proven guilty? Bah. You're just making it worse on yourselves by reacting this way instead of with a generous heart.

I post on a couple of other forums. Both are moderated and registration is required. The moderators do not hesitate to reprimand members for personal attacks and, if necessary, to delete posts. On one forum it is required, unless there is a very good reason (and you can pm the moderator to explain) that you use your real name (first and last). The other forum requires a small payment ($15.00 per year) in order to post on all topics (a few topics are free and open to the public). I post much more often to these forums than to Mudcat. I like the fact that some degree of civility is imposed. I know Max and many Mudcatters don't believe in censorship and that's okay, but I feel that the other two forums I belong to run more smoothly. There's nothing like Mudcat for getting song, lyric or any type of folk music information though. And I quite like many of the folks on Mudcat.

Guest, I will clarify, but I'm not interested in being baited out of patience.

Since I am not a compulsive poster, I generally only use/visit Mudcat when it's in its speedy form. "When it was fast, it was very very fast." When it's slow, or full of crap, I have lots and lots of other music-oriented things to do.

Other fora with all their bells and whistles that are slow, are ALWAYS slow.

See how quick a flamewar can get going and, in an instant, out of hand at Mudcat, is the proof of the pudding.

I dunno Guest ... the Mudcat lately reminds me of a small town piazza in Italy during the 1950's (like one of those Federico Fellini movies) where all the citizens are are arguing about the communists or the facists, no room for the in between, or for one who wants to discuss culinary delights, cultural music of the area, joking around, sharing info .. and if ya did facism, or communism comes into play ... the arguing eventually evolves from throwing pasta into ones faces and eventually to throwing punches ... I guess I should head down south for a while, down to Sicily .. it's pretty well balanced thanks to the Costa Nostra ... I'll come back north once the 1980's rolls around ... I hear communism and fasism has pretty well faded into the the concrete and clay by then. No more bullies. The people are actually out and about in the piazza actually enjoying life, laffing, joking, sharing stories, music abounds through the piazza, and the food, well there actually eating it not throwing it inot each others faces.

well, no matter what your opinion of the moderators and crazies..*grin*...you still totally ignore the question of why you don't choose a fake name...even when posting a guest with no cookie set. you cannot BE identified by merely adopting a 'handle'

This is the usual pattern for paranoid..or just plain stubborn..guests. "I do it MY way...I don't have to explain to you."...and we don't have to bite on your surveys, either. Stubborness cuts both ways...

this "impolite to not use a name or a hokey pseudonym" is beginning to fit the modus operandus of another certain (in)famous member whose monomaniac attempt at foisting change fits the Einsteinian definition of insanity ...

Obviously some people not of the Old Guard don't share the "considered to be inconsiderate" proclamation.

well for you who think it's just insignificant words when nameless people post them ...it sure brings out some opinionated responses and evidently closely-held beliefs.

Funny how insignificant words from nameless, insignificant non-entities can do that.

This wasn't an issue and didn't cloud over anything until a member brought it up.

I'm looking forward to what changes are in the works at arlo.net, meself. I used to lurk there way back in the day, but then it got dodgy for awhile, and I never went back.

Used to be on the Folk Alliance list, but there was too much fighting and bickering there for my tastes.

There really aren't any good North American folk forums online for the generalists.

Your saying, Guest, that if everyone used the same name it would be worse brought up an old memory.

When I was a kid in perhaps 4th grade (USA) a performer with a troupe of dogs came to the local high school and we all trooped over there.

This performer had 7 German Shepherd dogs, each of them named 'Kelly', all grouped in a semicircle. He told us to tell him which dog should do a certain trick or activity and we'd say things like: The third from the left. Without a detectable signal to the dogs he would say, Kelly, go pick up the ball and bring it to me. Or, Kelly, stand on your hind legs and twirl around and sit back down.

And danged if the dog didn't do that.

Now, I know that he had signals that he had trained them to but we certainly didn't pick up on it. It was great entertainment.

Shall we try it? *G*

I only post here, though I belong to a number of other groups; however, my posting here has dwindled a lot, as Mudcat early on answered most of my burning questions. But occasionally I have a new burning question (cf. Piedmont style).

My view about guests is that they are our guests while they are here, and we should treat them like guests. It is nice to have guests, don't you think? If they don't wan't to give their name, that is fine, as long as they act like guests.   Of course if they start peeing on your carpet (like Woody Guthrie seems to have done) then one should show them the door (even if they are Woody Guthire).

yours,

Peter T.

Sure, take your time to think about it.

I mean, coming into Mudcat as a guest is akin to being graciously invited in to someone's home, only to discover many members of the household have this dirty little habit, but no one will admit to it, and when you try and mention something about it they scream at you for being rude.

I realize this might take some extra thought.

Interesting concept, Peter....but after the initial hello, it is nice to 'introduce' yourself....that's what the blank space is FOR.

To me, a guest who comes into my 'home' and wants to particiate in the activities, but who wears a bag over his head, and refuses to even allow himself to be differentiated from OTHER nameless entities, is not being very friendly.

It is also an interesting notion that those who knowingly and willfully strain the rules of hospitality, then act huffy when someone reacts should be rewarded for their iconoclastic attitude.

The 'guest' designation was never designed to encourage total anonymity, but merely to allow new folk to post and get acquainted and to post from places where they could not set cookies...etc. Most of those who, like me, object to this behavior, would be perfectly satisfied if they'd merely use a consistent name...even if they NEVER became full, cookied members. (I don't think Art Thieme has has a cookie for a couple of years...and there are several other regulars who can't 'register' for whatever reason.

(and we poor, sad souls who can't get anyone to play with us will have just suck it up and entertain ourselves as best we can, I guess...*grin*)

I just love this forum. Where else can you go to find such arrogant people in denial?

This one takes the cake: Since I am not a compulsive poster, I generally only use/visit Mudcat when it's in its speedy form.

Posting history shows over 17,500 posts. If you have been a member for 10 years (not likely) and posted once a day, it would average out to 3,650 posts, somewhat shy of your 17,609 posts. You do the math. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

"Max is the host and he hasn't a problem Bill"

oh, yes, as a matter of fact he does...He noted a long time ago that he didn't like the practice...he just doesn't see it as something 'quite' important enough to ask Jeff to write complex solutions to.(Which, of course, means there's no easy way to inhibit unsociable behavior except by asking... and explaining why so many find it tedious! You 'can' keep posting with a bag over your head...I 'can' keep calling attention to it)

and not 'house'...home....it is almost a "home away from home" for many of us. I am not the owner...just one of the denizens... who has been here almost 10 years. We LIKE nice new people to find us....there are new 'faces' (names) here every week, and most of them seem to like it here...the more, the merrier! As I said a long time ago...you can be "Turnip" for all I care...but 27 'guests' are a pain!

Actually, other members were participating and we were chugging right along with an interesting thread, until BillD decided to hijack the thread because it was started by an anonymous poster.

Now mind you, I haven't done anything naughty by starting the thread. But the BillD's of this world are very rigid and intolerant. Hence their need to seize control.

But ask me if I really care what others here think.

These threads have been an slightly amusing diversion, while I got gardening and the laundry done today. And it's nice to know I haven't lost my touch. I managed to get a thread closed and a post deleted in a matter of a couple of hours, just by mocking Joe and the clones.

Nice to know I haven't lost my touch. Sadly, that also means nothing has changed around this place, and the whole censorship is sending the place right into the sewer, just as I predicted it would when the "new Mudcat policy" that put Joe in charge of censorship duties was announced a few years back.

I told ya so. Ha ha.

Most of us "Guests" remain Guests because you close minded people pick fights over even the simplest of things like a harmless little survey and debate every single point to death. Look at 90% of the BS threads and you will find insults, obnoxious comments, racism and downright hostility. Starting a battle because someone does not want to choose a fake name is the height of stupidity. If you don't want to speak to "Guest" then don't. Just don't bother posting because all that you do is start a problem. Last I heard, most of the countries that Mudcatters live in are still democracies (not counting that Bush is becomming a bit of a dictator). Why not let everyone choose as they please without ridiculing, insulting, namecalling, etc. Try to be a little more friently. Life is to short for constant negativism. Maybe if more of you felt that way then more of us "Guests" would feel comfortable enough to choose a name.

This is just one "Guest's" opinion. But,like usual, it will probably be ignored...or, more likely, ridiculed.

And, by the way, what is BNP?

Anyway, OTOneH I am mildly surprised that after all these years, more Mudcatters haven't branched out to other forums, especially considering all the fun innovations online there have been in recent years.

But OTOtherH, I guess I'm not surprised that the place remains as insular as it is. Inbreeding generally fosters more inbreeding.

Thanks to those who took the thread at face value, and at least tried to have a little fun with me, rather than at my expense. Y'all know who you are.

More Mudcatters haven't branched out to other forums because most other forums wouldn't put up with their petty arguments, hostility and just outright being impolite. In any other forum that I've been to there has not been such a large quantity of censored posts, threads cut off and people banned or threatened to be banned as there is here. Most other sites have members who treat each other civily and politely. They certainly don't jump on you because you don't agree with them or refuse to use some fictitious name. Let em stay here is the mud where they belong. Perhaps there is a very good reason why this site is called Mudcat. There's sure a lot of mud being tossed and crawled in.

I fell into the MC because it was a "tight community" that had a "well spring" emmenating from Susan and Dick's DT. It was hosted and grounded in Max's Delta-Blues

Then came the "critter names," then came the self-declared-witchs, and the "battle of the wiccans" with healing prayers and finally, the UK on-invasion.

I returned to various old newsgroups, and BBS, and "performance based" clusters that required "acknowledgment of sources" and vivid, voracious, vidio-conferencing, with validation.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

This place pre-cursed Wikipedia as a source for un-substantiated "BS."
