Subject: RE: BS: prepared for death From: Alice Date: 16 Apr 06 - 12:59 PM I was thinking about it just this morning... I am ready for death, but my house is not. There is too much "stuff" those left behind would have to sort through and deal with. Before being a parent, I had such a simpler life, so few possessions. Now there is an accumulation of kids clothes, toys, school projects, outgrown stuff of both his and mine to pass along. The charity shops are full and don't take donations like they used to, and I'm not going to waste it by putting it in the landfill. I recall when my parents were killed that my dad had very few things left around the house. He seemed "ready to go". My mom had WAY too much stuff like quilt fabrics and old buttons and old magazines and obsessive collections. |

Never gathered Powder River, Palo Duro, or John Day. No, we never rode the Judiths when their sirens preened and smiled. And we'll never ride the Judiths before they carry us away. Cowboys cut for sign on back trails to the days that used to be Sorting, sifting through chilled ashes of the past. Or focused on some distant star, out near eternity, Always hoping that the next day will be better than the last. Out somewhere in the future, where spring grass is growing tall, We rosin up our hopes for bigger country, better pay. But as the buckers on our buckles grow smooth-mouthed or trip and fall We know tomorrow's draw ain't gonna throw no gifts our way. And we never rode the Judiths when we were grey-wolf bold. Never rode the Grande Ronde Canyon out north of Enterprise. No we never rode the Judiths, and we know we're getting old As old trails grow steeper, longer, right before our eyes. My horses all are twenty-some. ..ain't no good ones coming on. The deejays and the Nashville hands won't let "... Amazed" turn gold. We're inclined to savor evening now. We usta favor dawn. Seems we're not as scared of dyin' as we are of growing old. I wish we'd a' rode the Judiths when we were grey-wolf wild. And gathered Powder River, Palo Duro, and John Day. But we never rode the Judiths when their sirens' songs beguiled And we'll never ride the Judiths before they carry us away. --Wallace McRae |

A little funny, a little startling for the family, but I wouldn't consider it the least bit "cruel". Subject: RE: BS: prepared for death From: Rapparee Date: 17 Apr 06 - 11:29 AM William Cullen Bryant, Kendall. When I was 5 my father died. Three years later, my maternal grandpa. Four years later, my maternal grandma. Seven years, my Uncle Jack. Six year, and my paternal grandpa. Then my friend Tom, of an overdose. My surviving Grandmother only a month before I married. Another Uncle. Then my mother. My oldest friend, Bob. My friend Steve, younger than I am. Heck, I used to play in a cemetery, I had a job setting gravestones, and my brother used to dig graves! Even in the Army, at the end of my hitch I had a Graves Registration unit attached to my platoon. Under the wide and starry sky, Dig the grave and let me lie. Glad did I live and gladly die And I laid me down with a will. This be the verse you grave for me: Here he lies where he longed to be, Home is the sailor, home from sea, And the hunter home from the hill. |

Well, I suppose that is probably a good time to start thinking about what to do with the rest of time one has, but so is 20, or 30, or 40, ... or 70. Youngsters at 50 are barely eligible for membership in the AARP. Incidentally, if in the US, a $12 AARP membership might help focus on some of the life changes appropriate to youngsters of such tender age. I can't give a whole-hearted recommendation to the orgranization, due to rampant politicizing in many of its activities; but the monthly Bulletin usually carries a smorgasboard of beautiful people a lot older than the newest recruits. Subject: RE: BS: prepared for death From: Rapparee Date: 17 Apr 06 - 05:42 PM Oooooooooookay, Kendall... In May, when sea-winds pierced our solitudes, I found the fresh Rhodora in the woods, Spreading its leafless blooms in a damp nook, To please the desert and sluggish brook. The purple petals, fallen in the pool, Made the black water with their beauty gay; Here might the redbird come his plumes to cool, And court the flower that cheapens his array. Rhodora! If the sages ask thee why This charm is wasted on the earth and sky, Tell them, dear, that if eyes were made for seeing, Then beauty is its own excuse for being: Why thou wert there, O rival of the rose! Over-the-counter medication, he said, was something to avoid. "Pills are one of the biggest problems people face today, especially these old people you see out there," he said. Subject: RE: BS: prepared for death From: JohnInKansas Date: 18 Apr 06 - 01:43 AM kat - The only way to significantly raise the odds on living to a very ripe old age is to have parents and grandparents who lived to a very ripe old age. But we now have lots of pills and potions that can help sick old people keep going for a lot longer than in past times. Mostly, when properly used, they minimize the effects of the things that would have been fatal not long ago. As long as it's still fun, perhaps the pills are worth it. John |
