Subject: ADD: Salome From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Apr 06 - 02:11 PM I came up with the song on a Google search, but the site had been closed and the Google cache wasn't there. I finally found it through the Wayback Machine, http://web.archive.org - it had been at a website called www.squaddiesongs.com -Joe- Salome Down our street we had a merry party, Everybody there was all so gay and hearty, Talk about a treat; we ate all the meat, And we drank all the beer from the boozer's down the street. There was old Uncle Ned, he was fair fucked up, So we put him in the cellar with his old bull pup, Little sonny Jim was trying to get in, With his arsehole winking at the moon. Oh, Salome, Salome, that's my girl Salome, Standing there with her arse all bare, Every little wiggle makes the boys all stare. Oh, slide it, and glide it, Right up her fucking chute, Two brass balls and the shankers too, And a foreskin full of shit. She's a big fat cow, twice the size of me, Hairs on her belly like the branches on a tree, She can run, jump, fight, fuck, Wheel a barrow, drive a truck, That's my girl Salome. On Monday night she takes it up her back, On Tuesday night she hauls in all the slack. Wednesday night she has a spell, Thursday night she fucks like hell, On Friday night she takes it up her nose, In between her fingers, down between her toes, Saturday night she dishes out jam And she goes to church on Sunday. Jesus wants me for a sunbeam, And a fucking good sunbeam am I. The above is an exact transcription of the lyrics in Songs from the Front & Rear: Canadian Servicemen's Songs of the Second World War, by Anthony Hopkins. The Squaddiesongs Website did not contain the last verse, about the "sunbeam." Click to play (joeweb) |

Subject: RE: ADD: Songs From the Front and Rear-Salome From: Flash Company Date: 18 Apr 06 - 07:44 AM There was a cleaned up version of this, though I can't remember who did it, chorus went:- Oh Salome, Salome, you should see Salome, Standing there with her feet all bare, Every little wiggle makes the boys all stare, She sings it, she swings it, and the sheiks all murmur 'Oooooh' And the old sphinx winks, and winks, and winks, Down there where the sand-bags grow! As I have said before, God, I'm old!!!! FC |
Subject: RE: ADD: Songs From the Front and Rear-Salome From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 18 Apr 06 - 11:27 AM Flash Company's lyrics may be seen here: http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/s/salomevarious.shtml That song is credited to "H. Weston/ J. Turner." Harry Roy & His Band and Billy Cotton & His Band are said to have recorded it in 1941. Which song was the original would seem to be anybody's guess. The bawdy version appears to have been well known to the Brits in WWII. |
Subject: RE: ADD: Songs From the Front and Rear-Salome From: Flash Company Date: 18 Apr 06 - 11:34 AM Hi Lighter, Billy Cotton sounds about right, probably sung by Alan Breeze. FC |
Subject: RE: ADD: Songs From the Front and Rear-Salome From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 18 Apr 06 - 11:39 AM The British Library Integrated Catalogue agrees that "Salome" (the clean version)was written by Harry Weston & John Turner, "c1941." |

Subject: Lyr Add: SALOME (Harris Weston & John Turner) From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 29 Aug 09 - 04:56 PM Hi, Salome fans: Three years plus after the last post.... The mystery of the tune of "Salome," which has puzzled bawdy song fans across the web for years, is solved. As indicated above, it is a parody of the Harris Weston & John Turner 1941 Hit "Salome," but the tune for it was unknown to all of us, till now. Here it is. The entire recording by Harry Roy and His Band (who may be known to some of you as the originator of the classic "My Girl's Pussy") is available on the net, at: http://www.rhapsody.com/harry-roy/the-roy-rag Here are the lyrics to the original as sung by Harry Roy. It's a pretty good fit to the parody. — Bob SALOME In Egypt where all the pyramids are, Down our street where lots of dirty kids are, There's a café painted white Where all the sailors like to go at night, There's a native band, how they play, But the best thing is the cabaret, Expect the suffocation, boltin' up the doors, When they put up the show, Cho 1: Oh, Salome, Salome, You should see Salome, Dancing there with her feet all bare, Every little wriggle makes the boys all stare, She swings it, she flings it, And the sheiks all murmur, "Oh," While the old sphinx winks and winks and winks, Out there where the sandbags grow, Cho 2: Salome, she's the idol of the kids, She looks a-like a million dollar saucepan lid, Curtain ring stuck through her nose, And bells upon her pretty little toes, She's a dusky, and though she looks so posh, She'd be a lighter colour if she only had a wash, But every night there's a big, big fight To see that gal, Salome. |
Subject: RE: ADD: Songs From the Front and Rear-Salome From: Leadfingers Date: 29 Aug 09 - 05:45 PM There were a number of dance Band songs from the Thirties and early Forties that were 're-Written' for NAAFI bar use - I learned a song in Germany 'Poor Little Angeline' that was as rood as the Salome parody - Later found the Original was from Jack Hyton's Orchestra . |
Subject: RE: ADD: Songs From the Front and Rear-Salome From: GUEST,epicure Date: 21 Sep 09 - 06:32 AM The version I remember hearing at a TA camp in 1955 (!) had She's a big fat cow, twice the size of me Hairs on her belly like branches on a tree She can run, jump, fuck, fart, Wheel a barrow, push a cart... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Salome (original & WW2 soldiers' paro From: GUEST Date: 04 Dec 09 - 08:39 PM We used to sing a version when I was younger that went thus: Salome, Salome, you should see Salome, standing there with her arsehole bare, every little wrinkle makes the boys all stare, she can run, jump, fight, fuck, push a barrow, ride a truck, that's my girl Salome! Monday night she takes it up the nose, Tuesday night it's in between the toes, Wednesday night what a bloody farce, Thursday night she takes it up the arse, Friday night she rings like a bell, Saturday night she fucks like hell, and she goes to church on Sundays! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Salome (original & WW2 soldiers' parody) From: Joe_F Date: 05 Dec 09 - 06:26 PM For relief, one might have recourse to the decorous stanza from "The Darky Sunday School": Salome was a dancer; she danced before the king. She wiggled and she waggled and she shook most everything. "How now!" said the king, "We'll have no scandal here." "The hell we won't!" Salome said, and kicked the chandelier. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Salome (original & WW2 soldiers' parody) From: GUEST Date: 15 Jun 10 - 10:59 PM Have just been going through the messages on Salome, Billy Cotton and Harry Roy. Am very keen to find out more about John Turner who the song is credited to. If anyone knows anything about him I would be grateful to hear from them. Am 90% sure that John Turner is my maternal Grand Father. He was also a musician on the Queen Mary and Empress of Britain. My email address is cheryll60@hotmail.com Kind regards, Cheryl, South Australia |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Salome (original & WW2 soldiers' parody) From: GUEST Date: 16 Mar 11 - 01:29 AM My Grandad (Royal Navy - Korea) had a somewhat altered version. Transcription may have suffered since I was only young when he sang it. This one makes more sense to me, since it references the whole belly dancing thing :-) In Egypt, where the pyramids are; Down Beer Street in Alexandria; There's a cafe, painted white; A place where all the sailors love to go at night. There's a gippo band, and how they play; but the best bit is the cabaret; there's a girl who's a sensation, among marines and matelots from every nation Ohhhhh... Salome, Salome, you should see Salome; dancing there with her belly all bare; every little wiggle makes the boys all stare. She swings it, she flings it; and the sailors all go "ooooooh!"; dancing there with her belly all bare; down where the sandbags grow. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Salome (original & WW2 soldiers' parody) From: Jim Dixon Date: 17 Mar 11 - 04:15 PM To Cheryl of South Australia (if she ever looks back here) In case you weren't already aware of this, the National Library of Australia has sheet music of around 20 songs written (or co-written) by "John Turner," all within the years 1940-1958. Hopefully, this link will take you to a list of them: click here |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Salome (original & WWII soldiers' parody) From: GUEST,Garry Date: 10 Apr 14 - 10:48 PM The one consistent line that turns up in all versions is the most hilariously puzzling - ' Down where the sandbags grow". Grow?? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Salome (original & WWII soldiers' parody) From: GUEST,Lynne Date: 24 Feb 19 - 11:06 PM My mum sang this to me, bouncing in her knee when I was just a baby, so nice to see the end bit which I used to da dum da dum . As never knew the end. Mum was a very modest lady and I’m so surprised she’d sing such a ‘risqué ‘ song, but at the same time, loved it. |
