I've started doing several songs from the Springsteen albums, in particular 'If I Should Fall Behind', 'Oklahoma Home' and 'Pay Me'. Nobody pretends they are classic folk songs (especially the way I mangle them), but they're good singalong stuff, people seem to like them, and I quite often get asked to finish pub evenings with 'Erie Canal'. Good for you, Bruce.

It made me realise that one of my teachers back in the sixties must have been a Pete Seeger fan, many of the songs were familiar to me, especially the Erie Canal and Jesse James. I can still recall standing around the piano singing those songs as the chalk dust glittered in the West Riding sunshine. Eee, nostalgia...

I know I'm not the only lover of traditional music who owns (and listens to) recordings by Steeleye Span, Hedgehog Pie and the like. A great song can stand up to any treatment, and if Springsteen's CD has gotten even a few folks to explore traditional folk music further, then that's a good thing.

Absolutely - it's a great track and I thoroughly enjoyed Springsteen's version of it; but that's all it is - a version. It's not trad and it's designed to keep The Boss's fans happy. I'm happy to hear it but of course I'd love to hear more trad renditions too. My own version is probably more along the original lines but that's only because I'm one man with a guitar and an audience joining in but everything's valid and Springsteen never claims to have re-invented the wheel.

Oy vey, Ray. Springsteen never came out and said, "This is a folk album and I am now a folk singer." Must every cover of every folk song be excruciatingly authentic--according to folk-snobbery standards, that is?

When I want authentic trad, I listen to authentic trad. I love it. But I don't demand it of everyone who wants to play folk songs.

See also the New Yorker profile of Pete Seeger in last week's issue. (High time, too!) It's a good issue; it also includes Sy Hersh's latest revelations, this time about the Bush Admin's plan to bomb - maybe nuclear bomb - Iran.

What a heap of nonsense this is. He's got a violinist pretending to play fiddle, an inappropriate bluegrass banjo player mixed well down, a bleedin' drummer. Bloody awful.

On a side note, Springteen's website has an quasi-discography and some interesting historical info for each of the songs included on the album. Here's a link: http://bruce.orel.ws/seegersessions/

Check out Bruce Springsteen's new video "Pay Me My Money Down" on CMT.com. This is from The Boss' forthcoming album "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions," which is comprised of covers of folk songs such as "Old Dan Tucker," "Jessie James," "John Henry," "We Shall Overcome," "Froggie Went A Courtin,'" and many others.

The video for "Pay Me My Money Down" is pretty cool- especially the cajun accordion. Here's the link:
