For all of you who were at the Fox and Hounds this year, I just thought you would like to know that the new Children's Hospice South West, who we collected for this year, has just been completed. It is now being equipped inside and will be taking its first children in April this year. Thanks to all of you who supported us.

It's a pity I wasn't there, years ago I wrote a parody for a local singer who had a penchant for deaths in songs. I managed to dispense with 329,265 souls.

If all goes well next week, I might even drop in on my way back, beg a cup of tea and go to rehearsal from yours............

Perhaps it ought to be a Tor Relay..... song by song or verse by verse.... One group go to the very top and sing the verse while the others stand at the bottom and join in the chorus, then the next person goes to the top .......

Cheers Cats, but I think the thanks should go to Bendigo. He's been doing the job for so long, you just have to point him in the general direction and he wanders his way round the room picking out the singers all on his own.

If Phot had turned up, the weekend could been re-Christened (or is it re-Paganed) as the 'Gerbils & Kittens 2006'

In total £329.90, but we have to take the expenses out of that, i.e flowers for the pub, printing etc, definitley in excess of £250, but how much more I don't know until the final bills come in, and they probably won't be in until the end of May. I'll let you know then.

I think Phot should have come and brought the kittens - would have gone well with the baby gerbils!!!

We have had some other suggestions for next year including the Ten Mini Tors... we make 10 small piles of stones around the campsite and people have to walk between them, camping overnight!!!!!

The Sunday nmorning walk and sing on the top of the Tors is already booked on the 'Programme', led by Snuffy. Thanks for this years walk Snuffy.. brilliant.

Thanks to Jacqui and Brian for driving on Saturday night and for all singers and non singers... and, most importantly, thanks to Dave and Frank at the pub, who actually want us back....

A slight correction - 16.5 actually. OK, so I only made it partway but having set off at least 15 minutes late, at least I got far enough up the Tor to hear you all singing *grin*

What a fantastic weekend!! Major thanks to Kathy & Jon for all their hard work - I'm definitely hooked & would recommend next year to all keen Singers. An excellent venue with a good choice of beers, food & accomodation & also very welcoming - what more could you want? Good company, songs & singing - all present & correct, wonderful.....

As Vaughan managed to kill off the entire world twice, that may go some way to explaining how I feel today!!!

Correction to numbers that made it to the top:

Sixteen! Jessie and I were up there on the trailblazing run, and back on the campsite by 9.30 (just in time to miss the noise and the crowds). I was tempted to leave a few chocky bickies up there for you, but not wanting to cause an arguement, ate them myself (it was a pre-breakfast walk). Some of us got to the top last year too - despite the breeze.

A great weekend even though we were late on parade and I was sporting the tankard scar!

cheers

Brian

Sussex Carole, I have searched through all my wild flower books and have been unable to identify that yellow flower you found, the pink ones with fern like leaves are Herb Robert, the other pink ones are Red Campion. The violet was the common Dog violet, but the smaller ones we saw earlier may have been sweet violet. The white flower is Greater Stitchwort. I think that was all the ones we were not sure about the names of!
Vaughan! You weren't supposed to tell them we didn't really make it last year! - I have photos to prove we did this year and will post them just as soon as I get time!
Cheers, Lucy

A wonderful weekend, Cats, but we have come to expect no less.

And I definitely "led" from the rear as those intrepid singers ascended the Tor for their "early morning sing". Well it was early: well after 5 am Mudcat time when the singing started. And the total of 14 who made it to the top was .....

14 more than made it last year!!!

A wonderful weekend!   Thank you John & Cathy. Friendly people and great singing in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The beer (thank you Lucy) and singing at the top of the Tor was excellent. The "What have you forgotten - let us get it for you in Tavistock" run was unbeievable! Where else do you get that offer from the organisers of a festival. Thanks Cathy for getting us a very much needed tin opener!!!

We'll be back next year armed with a bottle of bubbly to celebrate the Fox & Hounds weekend Birthday.

Thanks to all for a wonderful weekend! We managed to 'kill off' 9,876 people by the time I left at 2.30. Unless you count the fact that Vaughan killed the whole world twice.

Lovely to see everyone again and I'm so glad everyone entered into the spirit of my idea of having a death count......made it lots more fun, thanks.

Yep a great weekend, great singing, good friends and too much beer! (same as usual) not as much hedonism and debauchery as promised, but next year we'll really let our hair down for the 10th. The highlights for me were my 2 babes singing a song penned by my eldest, The top of the Tor sing - beer WAS consumed - was it heard in Lydford? The Passing helicopters gave us wide berth, so we guessed we were too loud for them! Barbara singing her American songs was great too. I really enjoyed the recording of the death toll in the songs, perhaps for next year, as it is the 10th we could count the number of times hanky panky occurs and/or quantity of beer consumed - all in song of course!
How about an apropriate song list for the tor walk - The Lark in the clear air has to be one.
Thanks one and all for a great time, good company and fantastic singing, lets do it all again next year.
Cheers, Lucy

No Scooby. We're the realists. We were at the last 'Elephants Nest'.
Wind, Rain, Snow, Floods (at least there was in our tent!), and flying marquees!!!!

All that on the same weekend in May and only 6 miles down the road from the F&H.

Take the sun cream and your thermals, and your wellies, you never know what you'll get.

see yer there

Probably a silly question from a Newbie to F&H, but is there a kitchen in the bunkhouse that one can make a cuppa in come morning? And if so, can one put milk in a fridge?

Coffee is Vital first thing, especially if there's a trot up the Tor in the offing :-)

Dave, who used to be the chef, now manages the pub and is keeping up the good food tradition. In the course of the evening we will sing and pass a glass around, sking you to put in the price of what you are drinking or whatever you want, and that's what goes to the kids.

... I didn't mention it earlier because it's not something we shout about, it's just something we do, but amongst all this frivolity and 'not what people would wish from small festivals', we have managed to: keep one of the Dartmoor Rescue Landrovers on the road for a year, brought a little girl over from Chernobyl for a life saving holiday, helped raise the money for a teenage boy with severe cerebral palsy go on a sail training ship, helped send a profoundly deaf girl on a cycle ride across Peru, contributed to the work of Rapid UK by raising money for the toys which they pad their boxes with for the children in the areas they send their rescue teams to, helped equip a classroom in a school in Angola, adopted two rescued donkeys and this year we are going to try and raise some money to donate to the building of a second Children's Hospice for the South West [the present one helps 200 children a year and there are about 600 more on their waiting list...] Even more reason why you should come.

Hi Guest,
Yes Jon and I do 'organise' the Fox and Hounds. As others have said before me it is a very small weekend when people gather at a very small pub on Dartmoor, which loves having us there, to sing, relax, and generally have a good time. There is no pressure on anyone to do anything, there are no guests, no performances. There are people who come hundreds of miles to this because it is something which grew from a need ~ somewhere to go purely to relax and sing. If people didn't want this then they wouldn't come. They do, so there must be a need for weekends like this. What it is not is a festival. We book the pub, tell them we are coming, let people know they are very welcome to come and if they turn up we have a weekend and if they don't..... well, we've never had a year yet when there wasn't anyone there. Why don't you come and see for yourself. You ~ and everyone else ~ are Very Welcome.

Guest. I'm not sure what you believe the F&H weekend to be. If you are suggesting that this is a closed shop restricted to the small number of people who have posted here, then you are mistaken. If it was, then it would not be advertised on a public forum.

It is, as has already been said, a weekend of singing, and as such welcomes people interested in singing. The fact that there has been some banter here amoung F&H regulars does not detract from the standard of the singing, and good singing does not stop people from enjoying themselves.

Festival? I think you were the first person on this thread to use the word. However, it does go on my list of festivals every year, and has done since it started at it's old venue someteen years ago. I wouldn't keep driving 200+ miles for a weekend that wasn't worthwhile.

Polly, there are rumours and there are RUMOURS!! That was well below the belt!!!

cheers

Brian

Happy May 1st Guest, congratulations for noticing that some people have posted more than once and that yes, Cats is the organiser. If you read the first post, by Cats, the organiser, you will see that it is not so much a Festival as a weekend of song. To me festival conjures up a weekend of music song and dance with other stuff thrown in for good measure. A weekend of song is errrr..... A weekend of singing. If you want to morris dance all weekend or play the banjo till you are blue in the face, then this may not be your kind of weekend, but it is fun, friendly, a superb venue in the heart of Dartmoor, and I have in the past been witness to some fine singarounds and singers at Fox & Hounds, coupled with the great company I have always met with, I think the description does not breach the trade descriptions act and I'll be there.
And as a small observation , several of the people who posted here also posted to the Miskin thread and were there - an 'award' winning festival - 'nuff said

For those of you getting a bit worried about all this, it isn't really that bad. We do have some exceptional singing along the way, the landlord loves having us there and the beer and food are excellent. The pub is on the edge of Dartmoor and is only a few minutes off the main A30. The pub has its own campsite as well as a bunkhouse and hotel rooms. Next year will be the 10th birthday and they put it in the diary last year!

You just make sure you bring yourself and your lovely voice.

Well someone has to provide all those things that everyone forgets ~ even if it means going back home for them! Now, last year we had to go home as so many people wanted to see the new [very old] house we had bought so we had to have the state visit!! We always go into Tavy to get flowers for the pub and it's a good excuse to visit the Cheese shop and the amazing amber stall in Tavy market! I have been up the Tor before but there's early and there's EARLY!!!!!

Morty, I do early. Catters do before lunchtime. Jack and Zak were on the way back when I set out. Damn, does that man never sleep?

I could be doing the walk later this year, Jessie takes a while longer to wake up now. I wasn't expecting him to be up to it this year at all, but he still seems to be ready to take on the world, al be it at a slower pace than before.

Cats, shame on you!!! I guess you can claim exemption this year because you've been ill - but i've never seen or heard any evidence of your going up to the top of the tor.

Now, the speciality cheese shop in the local town, or back home to feed the cats, or to the florists to buy flowers for the landlady. or back home to get the forgotten Bendigo, or get a spare tankard because Jacquie forgot to pack Brian's ... etc., etc. Yes, you've done all those. Admitted you don't need an excuse this year to get out of it - but you better have a good excuse next year!

What about the 'dog' show this year? Do Jack and Zak finally get to win the lookalike owner and dog class?

I'm not sure what time catters call early, but I think I was back on the campsite last year before they set out. It was too damn windy up by Widgery Cross to hang around too long.

Cats. On the way back down, I think I met part of your awning going the other way!!!

Seriously. If you're going to do the Tor walk, expect a round trip of about 2.5 - 3 miles and a rise of about 500ft from the ford in the stream (River Lyd) to the cross. It's worth the effort.

Chocolate before breakfast! I'd just consider it supper! as there won't be much sleeping!
Take care of that voice and get it really better for F&H MGAS.

All booked up & raring to go, my first time but wanted to come along for the past few years!!

Will the Mudgather on the Tor be a goer? I heard a suggestion it'd be before breakfast which is a challenge for me. Can Catters do chocolate before breakfast?

Hope all is well, positive thoughts {{{{Cats}}}}

We'll be there, possibly minus Tamsyn, as she has exams - and may still be getting over the shock of having her gorgeous long locks cut off this afternoon!!!!!!!!! (she still looks Gorgeous though!)
Cheers, Lucy
PS I started a rumour about a mudgather on Sunday mroning on top of the tor, hoping someone will take on the organising bit? Last year it was Snuffy, Selchie & me (and Amber & the other Hawker & a lark - who we serenaded with 'The Lark in The Clear air' if I remember correctly - well it was early in the morning!!!!!!

Just a reminder that the Fox and Hounds Weekend of Singing is May 12, 13, 14 at the Fox and Hounds pub, Bridestowe on Dartmoor. We look forward to seeing you all there for another cracking, seriously laidback, weekend. If you haven't got the info pm me. See you all there.
