I've just discovered that the Southwest Airlines ticket that I have from a cancelled flight expires May 26 instead of sometime in July, so I think I'm going to hop over to San Diego for the weekend, Friday, May 12 - Sunday, May 14.

I'm hoping to

a) go to the contra dance Saturday night and call a dance or 2 to audition (they won't hire unknown folks without them having called there -- makes it a bit tricky for an out of towner),

b) maybe do some museums or the zoo on my own pace without the constraints of the offspring,

c) stay with a dancer or other folkie who can get me to the dance

Any other folk musical opportunities I could reach by public transport?

To paraphrase and expand on something I saw on a band's site today: I'm fully house-trained and rather quiet, can bring own sleeping bag, tolerate any pets or children, like to sing (especially English & Anglo-American trad songs & Sacred Harp), play a little clawhammer banjo and English concertina.

Becky:

See PM -- You can put up here, but it will be a full house -- Edain will be staying as well. But we have sleeping bags, and air mattresses -- it won't be elegant, but it will be comfortable enough.

I dunno what's on aroun' town, being occupied with domestic labor at present, but there are some links to the Folk Societyy and other events in some earlier threads with "San Diego" in the titles.

See you then!

Thanks for the generous offer, Amos. I don't want to make things too crowded for you, so will continue to confer via PM. It sure would be nice to meet you.

As it happens the SD threads from the past 2 yrs are pretty useless (I'll say nothing about my not having checked them until prompted... whoops! Guess I said it!). Aren't you going to lead me by the hand through it all? ;-)

So for future viewers, the contra dancing is through San Diego Folk Heritage, who also have concerts, but not that weekend.

Via their site (though I had to look under "Links" instead of "Local Resources," I was reminded of the San Diego Folk Song Society, which conveniently holds their monthly singing sessions on second Sundays. I might have to see about making that.

I've got to do some map-studying to figure out logistics.

More oops -- the Folk Song Society was under "Folk Organizations." And I lost a ")" in the shuffle, I see.

Hi, Kaleea,

To quote myself, I "like to sing (especially English & Anglo-American trad songs & Sacred Harp), play a little clawhammer banjo and English concertina."

Emphasis is on the "little" for the instruments. Singing's my main thing.
