Guest, it sounds like a variant of "C'e 'na Luna Mmiezzo Mare." It's a bawdy song along the lines of "I Must and I Will Get Married." Very popular.

The words you heard for the chorus, might mean, "Hey, buddy, my mama is giving me a husband" although I think the word for husband is sposo; but they may have said "maritare" (to marry) rather than "mari dare."

You might check out this thread:   Lyr Req: Lazy Mary / Luna Mezza Mare

If it looks/sounds right, maybe someone one Mudcat can direct you to a recording for the tune, or I can get the tune to you one way or another.

Subject: Mama Mia song

54 years ago at Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, California, some Italian men with instruments used to sing a song that forever sits in my memory. I am not Italian and I'm not sure of any of the words. The best I can do is to phonetically spell out the few sounds of what I heard. It they ring a bell with anyone out there, please email me with the lyrics. jrtudean@hotmail.com I have always wanted to know the entire song.

The men always started the song out by saying "Does your mother come from Italy."

Parts of it are like this: Hey gumba, mama mia mari da, hey gumba mama mia mari da.

...mama mia mari dare

Many thanks,

JR
