They have a new CD out, All the roadrunning! have any of you heard any of it or bought it, yet? I love their music so I'd imagine a collaboration would be excellent. Thanks for any info and/or comments. kat |

Subject: RE: Emmy Lou & Mark Knopfler new CD From: Ebbie Date: 28 Apr 06 - 11:57 AM Their sppearance on Letterman last night makes me realize how unsophisticated my musical tastes are. I did not like the song they did. |

Subject: RE: Emmy Lou & Mark Knopfler new CD From: Grab Date: 28 Apr 06 - 12:14 PM Is it better than Knopfler's last album, "Shangri-La"? That was a bit too easy-listening for me. There was no real "edge" there, which is what I like to hear - someone who's prepared to shout at you "I've got something to say, and you'd better hear it". Shangri-La just didn't have enough bite to get under my skin. I'm also not a wild-keen country fan, so I'd kind of written this off as one to leave (even though I've got just about every other Dire Straits and MK CD going). Anyone fancy doing a bit of a review of the CD...? If it really is worth having, of similar quality to Ragpicker's Dream, I'll give it a go. But another Shangri-La I think would disappoint me. Graham. |
Subject: RE: Emmy Lou & Mark Knopfler new CD From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 28 Apr 06 - 02:23 PM Is there anywhere that you can hear audio samples? Amazon and CdUniverse haven't got any. |
Subject: RE: Emmy Lou & Mark Knopfler new CD From: GUEST,Martin Gibson Date: 28 Apr 06 - 02:27 PM If EmmyLou stays country and Knobfler does some twang with his guitar, I will probably like this CD. |
Subject: RE: Emmy Lou & Mark Knopfler new CD From: katlaughing Date: 28 Apr 06 - 02:33 PM I misse them on Letterman, last night; didn't know until too late. I, too, would love to hear more about it and like Grab, if it's comparable to Ragpicker's Dream, I will love it. Thanks, all, kat |

Subject: RE: Emmy Lou & Mark Knopfler new CD From: michaelr Date: 29 Apr 06 - 03:51 PM Here's my review: I have followed the careers of these two artists since they began -- Mark Knopfler with Dire Straits (who could forget the thrill of hearing the guitar on "Sultans of Swing" for the first time?), and Emmylou Harris with Gram Parsons (trading those gorgeous harmonies on "Love Hurts"). Both have matured into true masters and are at the top of their game. For these two to collaborate on an album was both unexpected and somehow inevitable. The songs on "All The Roadrunning" were recorded over a period of seven years, whenever the two could find time to get together in a studio. The result is a surprisingly cohesive record that feels completely natural. Two of the twelve songs are Emmylou Harris compositions, the rest were written by Mark Knopfler. Harris has proven herself numerous times over the years to be the consummate duet partner, her fragile soprano a perfect foil for all manner of male (and female, as in the "Trio" recordings with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton, and her Celtic collaborations with Mary Black and Dolores Keane) voices. Knopfler's weary baritone is as comfortable as a warm blanket, and his guitar tones, whether acoustic, electric, or resonator, exhibit his masterful touch with every note. Together, their voices make magic. This is not a country record, nor is it rock'n'roll. Instead, it's a stew of all the musical influences these two musicians have absorbed over the years. There are fiddles and mandolins, dobro and pedal steel, horns and accordion. The album is way better than Knopfler's latest solo record "Shangri-La". It approaches the perfection of "Ragpicker's Dream", with Harris' presence making it surpass that effort. Both my wife and I, after our first listening, summed up the experience this way: "Sweet." Since then, the record has grown on us and continues to reveal small treasures with each listening. This is a true gem, a masterpiece that has taken its place among my all-time favorites. I'll be seeing them in concert this June. I can't wait for what is sure to be a memorable show. Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Emmy Lou & Mark Knopfler new CD From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 30 Apr 06 - 03:34 AM I'll second what Michael said. A masterpiece from two consummate writers and performers. Going to see Emmylou in Nottingham UK - can't come quick enough. Just wish MK was going to be there too! :-) S:0) Ebbie - I'm not a raving country fan, more a folkie, but recognise great music when I hear it gal! Give it a go - it'll grow on you, I promise. All the best, Johnny. |

Subject: RE: Emmy Lou & Mark Knopfler new CD From: Grab Date: 05 May 06 - 12:55 PM Cheers Michael. If you think it's getting on for (or better than) Ragpicker's Dream, then it's worth checking out. Jaze, that's a top tip - brilliant! I didn't know Rolling Stone did that. OK, I'll have a quick shufti at it when I get home (no music downloads at work - damn) and see how it sounds. Graham. |

Subject: RE: Emmy Lou & Mark Knopfler new CD From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 06 May 06 - 01:18 PM I just got the CD and found it pleasant. Not brilliant, just pleasant. The music is very high quality with MK doing a lot of the guitar work, keeping it tasteful. But nothing leaps out and grabs me. Did anybody else think that the Roadrunning track sounds like a cross between the Lakes of Pontchartrain and The Homes of Donegal (or Tramps and Hawkers)? Seamus |
