Subject: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 24 Apr 06 - 10:39 AM England in Ribbons Now on Listen Again Real Audio Feed-wonderful program not to be missed. Hard to imagine that I am sitting here in Baltimore listening via ordinary slow connection and everything clearly! For listen again go to the bbc main page, then at the top select radio then select radio 3 then bottom right select listen again and then....scroll down to find England in Ribbons..... CB Sunday 23 April 2006 22:00-0:00 (Radio 3) For hundreds of years, ordinary people across the world have expressed their relationship with life and landscape through traditional dance, music and song. The English traditions that have been shaped and nurtured by the hands of successive generations now make up the deep and richly layered ground that is England today. A two hour montage of songs, tunes, conversation, storytelling and dance, with contributions from Hugh Lupton, Martin Carthy, Eliza Carthy, Chris Wood, Robert Harbron, the Britannia Coconut Dancers of Bacup, Oxford Folk Festival goers, Rosalie and Colin Dipper, the English Acoustic Collective, John Spiers and Jon Boden, Andy Cutting, Kathryn Tickell and many more. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/feature/pip/hp4fq/ |

Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: GUEST,again! Date: 24 Apr 06 - 10:51 AM Damn! Forget all that - the first time I tried to be clever and clicked on 'More programmes' beneath, rather than the actual words 'Listen Again'. When I checked...blah blah... thoroughly confused now? |
Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: DMcG Date: 24 Apr 06 - 11:02 AM Well, if you get through all of that, and manage to listen to it ... I tried to approach it as if I were a general Radio 3 listener, not someone interested in folk music, and overall I thought it worked well. The unusual version of "Jerusalem" struck me as eye catching (ear catching?) and I think it was a good idea to leave the Sam Larner/Walter Pardon stuff to quite late in the show to allow people to acclimatise a little. A lot of the earlier work was musically complex, which I think would appeal more to the general listener. There was only one song, near the end, that I thought some might find too long and boring, and while I liked the idea of merging the traditional 'Lofty Tall Ship' with a modern interpretation, I don't it worked that well in practice. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen aga From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 24 Apr 06 - 11:07 AM Amazing how fast they are making the archived programs accessible. It was live only yesterday.... I generally go right to the listen again link from the station page. CB |
Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 25 Apr 06 - 03:18 AM The unusual Jerusalem was to the tune of Bonny Bunch Of Roses. Why? |
Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: JohnB Date: 25 Apr 06 - 09:44 AM Have not actually listened yet but this is what it has on the playlist. Blake arr. Davenport: Jerusalem (set to the traditional tune The Rose Tree) Bob Davenport & friends Taken from the album The Common Stone Topic TSCD 552 Which is not the tune given above. JohnB. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 25 Apr 06 - 09:50 AM The song Bonny Bunch Of Roses is usually (always?) sung to that tune. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: manitas_at_work Date: 25 Apr 06 - 09:51 AM The Bonny Bunch of Roses is often sung to the tune of the Rose Tree to my certain Knowledge. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: JohnB Date: 25 Apr 06 - 10:19 AM That would make the "tune" Rose tree and the "song" Bonny Bunch of Roses. Sorry to be picky but I have this problem all the time with people using the wrong titles for songs/tunes. Guess it comes with being a Virgo. I am listening to the show now and the tune is definitely Rose Tree. A few tracks further down the list they credit: Trad: Song and tune (as yet unidentified) Val's Sunday session at the Kelham Island Tavern in Sheffield BBC Field Recording The song is definitely Dido Bendigo, a Yorkshire Foxhunting song. It sounds to me like Gavin Davenport of the wonderful English group Crucible who is singing the lead. I also think I could hear Jess Arrowsmith singing in the chorus. The group is from the Sheffield area. I will email them and get them to verify if it was them. JohnB |
Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: manitas_at_work Date: 25 Apr 06 - 10:29 AM But Keith said 'was to the tune of Bonny Bunch Of Roses'. SO he was right as the Rose Tree is the tune to the Bonny Bunch of Roses. Same as The (London)Derry Air is the to Danny Boy. No reason why a tune can't have it's own name. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: England In Ribbons now on Listen again! From: JohnB Date: 26 Apr 06 - 09:18 AM That's what I said. If a tune has it's own name, use it. Don't use the name of the song to identify the tune. Which of the 45 or so tunes for While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night are we singing? would be the best example I can think of. That's why tunes DO have their own names. JohnB |
