There have been a brazillion song lyrics posted here recently attributed to one Joe Wilson, all posted by someone who calls himself #1 Peasant and, if I recall, was at one point as popular here as Shambles and Martin Gibson together.

In the spirit of sharing knowledge and the fruits of research I ask, Who is Joe Wilson?

Cheers,
Michael

Glad you asked, Michael. Whoever Joe Wilson is, he must have as many lyrics on Mudcat by this point as Bob Dylan.

I was thinking the same thing.

Let's have some answers here.

Who is he?

Is he a Mudcatter?

Is he even alive?

And WHY CAN'T he write in ENGLISH?

If he'd only ever written 'Sally Wheatley', that alone would have made him a great in my book.

Bert - (assuming you're a colonial) he writes in the English spoken in his native part of the UK. Long live regional dialects and accents - everyone should have one (and yep, I have a Lincolnshire Yeller-Belly accent, and proud of it!). :-)

I agree he's written some cracking songs. There used to be a good, honest, town-centre pub named after him in Newcastle, but it got changed into a pretend-Irish-post-office pub called Scruffy Paddy or Unhygienic Seamus or some such. I don't think it ever got changed back.

Almost forgot....

Last night out at J.Patricks Pub for a pint or several I met the famous bodhrani Myron Brethholz on the corner....we had a nice chat and then I mentioned that I was working on the sangs of Joe Wilson.....

Another musician asked....where is this Joe Wilson I said - oh Joe he is Dead.

Myron came to attention and rushed over! NO! Really how did you hear....I said yup he has been dead since 19th century sometime.

Oh said Myron- not THAT Joe Wilson- a friend of his and the writer husband of the CIA agent whose name was leaked....who apparantly has been seriously ill...

Oh! that Joe Wilson- I noted I wish he would slightly change his name because as I am searching news archives for my Joe the other one keeps coming up in great numbers.

Thanks for the link Mick. That clears up a lot. If he died in 1874 then I guess he isn't a Mudcatter (Unless maybe he is Kendall *HEE *HEE).

Strollin' Johnny, actually I'm a transplant. Came from London originally and now live in Colorado. I still haven't quite lost all of my accent.

Yeah, I didn't think he was Valerie Plame's husband, but thanks for clarifying.

Conrad, please keep the Joe Wilson threads to a minimum. Better to post to existing threads, rather than to keep starting new ones. When you start too many threads, people get annoyed and post messages like some of the ones above. They get the feeling that you are using Mudcat as a garbage can and just dumping on us.
I think this Joe Wilson stuff is very valuable, but it's best if it's kept together in a minimum number of threads so that people can see the relationships between the things you're posting.
I face the same thing in the songs I'm researching that are in the Rise Up Singing songbook. The songs of San Francisco Bay Area songwriter Betsy Rose are a good example. They are of great interest to a limited audience, but they would be annoying to the majority if I were to start a new thread for each song. We're up over 162,000 threads, and every new thread started makes things get a little bit more lost.
Thanks.
-Joe-

Hello to you all! I am Kasandra Van Keith nee Wilson. geat grand daughter of Joe Wilson, Bard of Newcastle, living in Nova Scotia Canada. After lengthy research on Ancestry I discovered our connection. Through this I was able to connect with Ed Waugh, local Newcastle on Tyne playwright who was in the process of writing a play on Joe’s life, and Dave Harker, local author, who was in the process of writing a book on Joe’s Life. I was invited to Newcastle in June 2016 with my brother, to honour our great grand father at many events, meeting with the Mayor of Newcastle, a Blue Heritage plaque was in the process of being created. In November 2016, I returned again to Newcastle with my sister, to witness the placing of the plaque on his birthplace at 8 Stowell Street, and for the first Joe Wilson Night, produced by Ed Waugh, which celebrated Joe’s 175th birthday on the 29th, to great acclaim. In 2017 Dave Harker’s book The Life and Songs of Joe Wilson was published (can be purchased at Newcastle Central Library). The play The Great Joe Wilson will be touring in September 2018 in Darlington, Whitley Bay, Newcastle (at Sage Gateshead), Stanley and South Shields; this time I am returning with my youngest son. Joe Wilson Night has continued from 2016, 2017, and will be an annual event from now on. To say that I am enormously proud of our Joe can not be overstated. I can now say, with pride, that I am an honourary Geordie. Note: in Dave Harker’s book, there is a final chapter called A New Life in a New Land, which follows the journey of the Wilson family, with Joe’s widow emigrating to the US, and the immigrating of my grandfather to Canada in his early 20’s. The Wilson Clan is a large one...from my 3 siblings and families, from one coast of Canada to the other.
