Subject: Origins: Earliest date for 'Diarrhoea Song' ????
From: John M.
Date: 01 May 06 - 05:24 PM

Hello everyone,

This thread is for child-like audiences only.  I am looking for the earliest date for the traditional children's song titled:

                                    The Diarrhea Song

                 1.  Do you sing this song?
                 2.  If yes, when and where did you learn it?
                 3.  Would you be willing to sing it for folklore purposes over the phone?

So far I have only been able to trace this song back to the late 1970s.  Do you remember a version earlier than this?

Your help with the tune and giving an earlier date for this song, please feel free to email or call me (314.381.0492).

Thanks!

THE DIARRHEA SONG

Diarrhea (pfffft, pffft)
Diarrhea (pfffft, pffft)

Some people think it's gross
I think it's good on toast

Diarrhea (pfffft, pffft)
Diarrhea (pfffft, pffft)

Notes: This is from the singing of an anonymous 37 year old woman from Wisconsin recorded on 26 March 2006.  She learned this sometime in the late 1970s.

Diarrhoea, I just caught a dose of diarrhoea
And suddenly that name, will never be the same to me.
Diarrhoeah, say it loud and your friends start rushing,
Say it soft, you can hear cisterns flushing.
Diarrhoea, will I never stop going, diarrhoea,
All the horrible sounds of the arse in a single phhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrp
Diarrhea, diarrhoea diarrhoea, diarrhoea.

Not what you wanted, but then again, who does?

Giok

[Think West Side Story]

I learned it in elementary school in the late 70's in Northern New England, but our version didn't have the pfft pfft...we did cha cha cha instead.
Diarrhea cha cha cha, etc.

I have collected many versions in Scottish schools in the 1990s and in a collecting trip a few weeks ago, but Ian Davison's ms collection of over 500 items in Glasgow in the 1970s does not I think have it at all [certainly not with the usual Scottish start to each verse of 'I was', as in 'I was goin to the chippy when ah slipped in somethin slippy'].

It does remind me of a song we used to sing in Peace Corps training, after the health lecture on how to guard against dysentery. The song had this memorable line:

The water is delicious,
It will keep you on the run!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

from a group of kids from a tough housing estate on a camping holiday in 1984..ish

Diarrhoea Diarrhoea
comes out your bum like a bullet from a gun
Diarrhoea Diarrhoea

I was swimming in a lake when I felt a belly ache
Diarrhoea Diarrhoea
I was walking down the lane when I felt a sudden pain
Diarrhoea Diarrhoea
I was lying in my bed when it sloshed around my head
Diarrhoea Diarrhoea

can't remember more...

I remember it vaguely from my childhood, which would place it somewhere around 1977-8 in New England. I must have thought it was too gross, because I didn't learn it and never sang it.

The only words I remember were sung by a character in the movie "Parenthood," which came along much later.

It was certainly sung at our school in West Yorkshire when I was 4 in 1981 and I suppose it had been going longer than that before.

I was walking down the lane when I felt a sudden pain
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft),
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)

I went behind a bush and it came out in a rush
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)

I tried to make a bung but it trickled down mi thumb
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)

It shot out of mi bum like a bullet from a gun
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)

I tried to ride mi bike but mi arse felt like a spike
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)

I went to the shop and mi knickers went pop!
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)
dioarrhoea, (pfffft, pffft)

There was never a tune to it, more like a rap really!

If you're gonna do it as skip to the loo, you need an extra pffft in the two lead lines of the chorus. That's speaking loosely, of course.

I learned it as a kid in the early 90's from my parents. They were born in 1950 and would have been way out of school in the 70's.

When we sing it, we don't do any pfft or anything. it is:

When you're climbing up a ladder
and you feel something splatter
Diarrhea Diarrhea.

When you're taking off your dress
and you see a big brown mess
Diarrhea Diarrhea

Those two are for sure from my parents.

I remember this from 1979/1980 in West Yorkshire, England. The tune had 7 syllables per line (da da da da da da daa - da da da da da da daa). I made one verse up about the Scarlett Pimpernel - weird childhood ha!

Kosher Bailey's cousin Dai ... er
Well he tried to join the choir.
Kosher Bailey said "No Fear"
We will have no Dai ...er .. Here!"

Baz Yates, Pelsall Folk Club (think Walsall) 1979 ish

and I might add the trad chorus is:

"was you ever saw, was you ever sore, was you ver sore such a funny thing before?"

Not an early date, alas, but I do recall this being chanted in school (in Liverpool) in the 1990s. I remember one of the lines was "coming out your bum like pedigree chum".

I think I invented it in the mid- 1970s:

When your tummy feels funny and it's coming out runny,
Diarrhea, pfft pfft, Diarrhea, pfft pfft.

When you're running down the hall and your pants begin to fall,
Diarrhea, pfft pfft, Diarrhea, pfft pfft.

Hard to believe, but there is a blog devoted to updating verses to the "Official" Diarrhea Song, and another that presents it as a baseball game tale in a song to be sung on a school (?) bus.

I don't know this song but I remember having a terrible attack when traveling somewhere in the former Yugoslavia in the 70's - my parents sent me behind the cars since there was no other place to go, and I thought I was in this very private place when along comes a tour bus, double-decker no less, with tourists taking pictures of the peasant/gypsy child squatting in the bushes... they had sent me to the end of the lot right by the main road, not off into a discreet corner. Oops. Wish I'd known the song, we could have sung it.

I believe that song may come from our soldiers or sailors from the wars before 1950. I was taught that by my older brothers when I was 3 or 4. That was in 1955, Seattle area.

My dad used to sing this song. He was born in 1956 so the dates around the 70s would fit. I shall ask him where he learnt it. He used to sing the lines 'went to the chippy and felt something slippy" as someone said early in the discussion.

There is somewhere a song possibly with the title I got the diarrhoea blues.
I think a line goes something like .......
I woke up one morning and looked down at my shoes.
I got the diarrhoea blues.

Or close to that.
