Her first public performance was in the sixth grade when she and a friend sang "Blowin' the Wind" in two-part harmony accompanied by their guitars. But it was in the early 70's, when a chance hearing of the British Folk Rock band Steeleye Span singing "King Henry" would change everything. For Debra, that resonant medieval sound echoed deep within her and she was driven to find more of the same. Her small weekly allowance, intended for school lunches was often spent buying record albums of other British folk rock groups such as Fairport Convention, Pentangle and Jethro Tull. A few years later in her university's library, she encountered the 10 volumes of Francis James Child's "English and Scottish Ballads". When Debra joined the Chico, California-based quartet, Tar'd & Feather'd in 1989, she was introduced to the singing of Peter Bellamy, Lou Killen, Roberts and Barrand, The Copper Family and many others. Debra's wondrous journey into the depths of traditional song had begun. The power that is contained in Debra Cowan's singing can silence even the noisiest room and can command the attention of even the most disinterested listener. Her love and passion for singing and her respect for a well-crafted song is felt by anyone who is in her presence the minute the first notes resound. Whether it be tears of laughter or crying, feeling the song is what Debra Cowan is all about. Yes, Debra seems to have a song for every occasion - and it is always the occasion for a song. "What makes Debra good is not her superb voice, nor her skillful guitar playing, nor her varied repertoire, nor her extensive knowledge of her music, it is, plain and simple, the fact that she loves singing, and her passion for her music is there in every note she utters." - Nigel Schofield, Producer, Free Reed Records, UK" To hear samples of Debra's music click here. This promises to be another concert not to be missed!!!!! |
