I have the first 6 episodes from Series 1 and have transferred them from VHS to 2 DVDs.

If you wish to have a copy, please email me to discuss. I also have 2 episodes from the second series and would be interested in hearing from anyone who can help me complete this set.

Best regards

John

It was on BBC4 tonight Friday 23 Jan at 7.30 pm.

I assume the rest of the programmes will be shown at the same time every week.

I can't remember how many programmes there were in the TS2 series. There were 2 CDs, so I suppose 7 half-hour programmes might be right.
I can't get any forward listings for BBC 4 beyond Sunday at present.

In other news:
Transatlantic Sessions - Live

Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas are doing a "live" version of Transatlantic Sessions at Celtic Connections in Glasgow - see below - not sure how "arranged" it will be, but then it was never clear how rehearsed the music on the TV series was...

Based on the highly praised 1990s BBC Scotland television series, and accompanying albums, this star-studded concert brings together an array of top-name roots artists from Scotland, Ireland and the US. Our host for the evening, as in the broadcast version, is Shetland fiddle maestro Aly Bain, who has recruited a crème-de-la-crème "house band" line-up for the occasion, featuring leading instrumentalists from both sides of the Atlantic including Jerry Douglas and Kate and Anna McGarrigle. They will be joined during the show by a glittering array of vocalists and solo players, to perform specially-arranged versions of Celtic and Americana music, ranging from the traditional to the contemporary. Featuring Kate and Anna McGarrigle

I have just watched again for the umpteenth time my video of the original transatlantic sessions . most of my friends have borrowed it and think it is magic . What does it say about our enlish BBC that they are not aware of how popular thias ype of music is and how a visual presentation of live session music is so much richer than purely audio. My father loved the video and commentede on how he liked to watch the expressions on their faces . john hayes

Just went to the shop on the BBC website. The contents of their Folk section comprises:
1. A video about The Corries
2. Another Video about The Corries
3. A CD celebrating St Patrick's Day
4. Errr... that's it

A search on "Transatlantic Sessions" brings up four programmes featuring John Sessions.

(Sigh)

Thanks for the updates Shambs old buddy. Just re-viewed your last longish post. Wales, Ireland and Scotland are no longer referred to as "Regions" by London - we are now known as the "Nations". Not only that - if a programme is broadcast throughout the BBC as a whole is is said to broadcast nationally (pron: nash-nally) whereas if it it is in one of the Nations only its broadcast nation-ally (pron: nay-shonly). You work it out, beats me......

Playing now is one of the two CDs of the Transatlantic Sessions 2 that I received for my birthday. They are great. Makes me even more determined to see the series. Jerry Douglas is quite good isn't he?

Still no reply from Jane Root.

Not much to report I am afraid. I have still to receive an acknowledgement or a reply from Jane Root, has anyone else?

There is a letter on the subject in the latest edition of what is now called FROOTS (was Folk Roots Magazine) and that seems to have generated a little more interest.

Phillipa

There are problems with the regional policy, which I will go on to., but the main problem I have with it as stated, is that is given as an answer to the question of why the second series is not going to be shown. As such it does not explain why having decided to show the first nationally (ie in England), they are going to just sit on the second. At best the answer given is a little incomplete, if not a little insulting to one's intelligence.

In essence, what they are saying is that, they don't have to show it nationally and for the very good reasons you gave about the nature of the programme, that does not make a lot of sense. Either the national planners do not think that the series is any good, or they do not understand the 'Transatlantic' nature of the programme very well, or that they do and do not think that a 'regional' area (BBC Scotland) should be making such a 'non-regional programme? I am beginning to believe it may be the latter. I still await a reply from my letter to Jane Root.

I hate to talk in terms of music having a nationality, but it is the only way I can explain this. The policy itself has a problem, in that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland being considered as countries, have their chance to display their folk music in regionally made programmes, with the chance that they will be shown nationally (ie in England). England, on the other hand is further divided up into regions, making their own programmes and has no opportunity to show English folk music, proudly as a whole.

You have the position where TV presenters other than those in England can proudly use the words Scottish, Welsh and Irish, but those in England have to use the words British and be very careful and look very twitchy when they venture to use the word English.

All that came a bit hard for me to say, it was only to demonstrate the weakness of the policy, as I am probably the least nationalistic person in the world. Which is why it is so important to me that programmes featuring musicians from different cultures playing together are shown and to have the regional policy used as an argument for not showing this series, is 'showing a red rag to a bull'.

It is my understanding that the BBC Licience money is collected nationally (ie UK wide), so how can the non-showing of programmes to all of those who have funded their making be defended?

I don't see anything so horrible about the Beeb's statement re regional policy. The regions should have some autonomy in programming decisions. But yes, if enough people in another region request the programme, the management might be persuaded to air the show. I think it would be better in this circumstance to cite the reasons why you would like to see the programme (which is, after all, multi-cultural), mentioning the other places where it has been broadcast, but not being overly critical of previous policy regarding broadcast. And there could be campaigning in general for more folk-music on the airwaves.

Thanks for that Ian.

We shall just have to keep on I suppose. It is very annoying as I have still to receive a reason from them why they are not going to show it. Until they give a reason it is a bit difficult to know what arguements to use.

I have written (snail mail) to Jane Root but she has not replied. I will let you know when or if I receive one.

Re: FW: Transatlantic Sessions 2 To: Sian Evans-Customer-Services References: 1

How very disappointing it was to receive such a dismissive reply. Apparently The Transatlantic Sessions falls under the heading of allowing "various Nations and Regions to make programmes tailored to their own communities." I suppose then, that it has also been shown in the USA and Ireland, since there are artists of those nationalities on it? How very parochial. I suppose this also means that the BBC is going to cease showing any more sitcoms, series or documentaries from the USA or Australia since we, being English, could not possibly be interested.

The Scheduler's Office also says, "I can assure you this does not indicate any change in music policy by the BBC." This is exactly what worries me. One of the most culturally important events of the 20th century has been the revival of English traditional music by collectors Cecil Sharp et al and then the folk revival. In the coming millennium programmes there is not a single mention of this. Whereas traditional and traditionally-inspired music is part of the atmosphere in Ireland, in England we are used to being ignored and prone to sneering stereotypes. I don't know why I expected better from the new BBC. Bring back Jim Lloyd.

Apparently the BBC do not yet take Emails very seriously, the best course of action would be a snail mail to Jane Root Controller BBC2, BBC TV Centre London.

I have been told that they consider a program popular if it receives about 25 letters in it's favour. We should be able to manage a few more than that, I would have thought?

I recieved a little more from Andrew Fitzpatrick at BBC 2.

Transatlantic Sessions 2 was commissioned by BBC Scotland for transmission in Scotland only. Unfortunately the fact the first series got a UK Network transmission doesn't in any way guarantee the second series will get one. Many programmes are made in the different Nations - Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the English Regions which are never shown on the Network, some might say this is a BBC weakness but we feel it allows various Nations and Regions to make programmes tailored to their own communities. We understand that occasionally viewers will be frustrated by this fact.

So at the moment we have no plans to repeat the series. I can assure you this does not indicate any change in music policy by the BBC. I appreciate that this must be disappointing for yourself and other folk music fans but please remember the BBC does try to cater for all music tastes on all its services be that Television, Network Radio and Local Radio, including the Cambridge Folk Festival on BBC Two.

No, Shambles me duck - if enough people say they want something, the BBC WILL appreciate it - because it means bigger viewing figures if they show it, and a greater justification for the existence of the Corporation. So - let's get to it!!

I have been try to find out when BBC TV viewers , other than BBC Scotland, who have already seen it, will be able to see the follow up to The Transatlantic Sessions.

I have received the following from BBC Scotland.

"Thank you for your email. To clarify the position, BBC Scotland are extremely proud of "Transatlantic Sessions" the first series of which was very well received both North and South of the Border. Unfortunately, although the second series was offered to network television in London, by BBC Scotland, the Controller of BBC2 decided not to show the series. I would suggest that you direct any further comment on the situation to Jane Root, Controller BBC2 at Television Centre in London.

Yours Sheila Hardie"

And the following from BBC 2

"I'm the Deputy Scheduler on BBC Two. We have no plans to repeat The Transatlantic Sessions 2 on Network. Thanks for your email.

Andrew"

Andrew Fitzpatrick

That would appear to be it! I have asked as to the reasons for this decision, but have not yet received a reply, I will post it here if I receive one. I think that it may help the cause if they could receive a few more requests for the programmes to be shown. Your help would be greatly appreciated by me, if not by the BBC..

It does not make a lot of sense to me, for us, as licence payers to fund quality programmes on our music, which are rare enough, only to be denied the opportunity to see them.
