Hi
My dad actually owns part of this lake and I am currently building a house overlooking it - would love to hear of any further info you have regarding the origins of this song?
Many thanks
Laura Meharry

That's just wonderful! Thanks so much to the both of you - great to have some of the vital word corrections too. I'd googled it very thoroughly too!
The words/themes are somewhat standard, but together with the melody it makes for a sweet wee piece.

Hi Pukeko,

The one who can tell you best is probably Mudcatter eoin o' buadhaigh who has a terrific knowledge of Co. Down songs and is exceedingly lovely as well (I'm biased because he's my uncle, but it's still true). This song appears in his book, Songs of the County Down (link to book), as "Carrickmannon Lake".

I first heard this song in the 70's sung by Sarah Anne O'Neill. Carrickmannon lake is in Co. Down.

This is what i sing.

One evening for my pastime a ramble I did take
Down by a crystal fountain called Carrickmannon Lake
Down by yon crystal fountain an image I did view
For nature never did design an image fair as you

With courage bold undaunted, I boldly then set forth
Saying my delightful charmer my venus of the North
Give me my way or else I'll stray, my one and only joy
And sure t'would be a pity to refuse a harmless boy

With flashing eye and ne'er a smile she coldly said to me
Young man depart for in my heart no place is stacked for thee
And to my further pleading no answer would she make
But turned away and left me there by Carrickmannon Lake

Killinchy is my birth place, where first my breath I drew
Drumreagh it is my parents place, a thousand times adieu
All for your sake I'll passage take across the stormy sea
A pilgrim there to do or dare in North Americay

Now all young men take warning and shun Killinchy fair
Likewise sweet Carrickmannon for that false one lives there
and as the sun's declining o'er yonder hill so clear
The shadow of her dwelling in the lake it does appear

I came across a song (ex BBC radio) recently; just wondering if anyone can tell me about it, and of any corrections to the words I've attempted to transcribe - Cheers!

One evening fair to take the air a ramble I did take
Down by a crystal fountain called Carrick Manon Lake
Down by yon crystal fountain an image I did view
For nature never did design an image just like you

With courage bold and taunted I boldly then set forth
Saying my delightful charmer you venus of the North
Give me my way or else I'll stray my one and only joy
And sure it would be a pity for to kill a harmless boy

With flashing eye and marris eyes she coldly said to me
Young man depart for in my heart no place is stacked for thee
And to my father pleading no answer would she make
But turned away and laughed me by, Carrick Manon Lake

Killinchy is my dwelling place, where first my breath I drew
Drumray it is my parents place, a thousand times adieu
All for your sake I'll passage take across the stormy sea
A pilgrim there to durumdare in North Americay

Now all young men take warning and shun Killinchy fair
Likewise sweet Carrick Manon for that false one she lives there
As the sun is low descending o'er yonder hill so clear
The shadow of her dwelling in, the little does appear
