I've found a couple of different version online, but they all seem pretty "Easy Chord"

Anyone out there with a good grasp of 7ths and augmented 6ths and such got a more accurate and interesting trascription of this wonderful old song?!?!

It's the Ab (G added) that kills them all Clinton ;-)

Don't worry too much about the bridge, Clinton--it is really simple--

|A7 A7/A7 A7/A7 A7/A7 A7/

D7 D7/D7 D7/Ab7 F7/E7 E7|

It's the verse that's a bit difficult---

Wasn't it Steve Goodman that did the backing on Judy Collins' version of it, way back?
I got the chords from the record, but his own set must be out there, somewhere.

My 'Ab (G added)', is the Ab7 in MTed's notation above.
The way I hear it off the record, it's XX1013.

Steve Goodman's version is the canine's testicles, though.

... and I think Goodman does a B7 in place of MTed's penultimate E7: '.. and I was the kid with the...Drum'

I 'THINK', I say... I'm humming it in my head, here...

You could put a B7 there, Brendy--wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit--

I haven't posted all my chords, for the simple reason that, though I have worked the chords up to most of it, as per the way I remember it, but I am only sure of about half the introduction, and will have to go back and find a recording (other than the Tom Waits one that I have handy) so that I can actually hear the thing--this means going in to the deep archives, so it'll be monday or so--

The melody on this varies from one recording to another, and, more than most tunes, slight alterations in melody changes the chords--I'll use the Rudy Valley and Al Jolson versions--I don't really remember the Goodman version, Chad Mitchell changed it around a lot, and forget Waits entirely--

I'm just terrible at putting names on chords sometimes, and this song is full of those types.

A7_Once in Khaki suits, Edim_Gee we looked A7_swell
Edim_Full of that Gdim_Yankee Doodely C#dim_Dum Gm6/C# (LOL!!!)

.. then baack to the D7

LOL

Agreed on that one... No gain without pain
I listened to a tape of the single over and over again for a full 12 hrs, sometime in the early '90's. By the time I had a handle on the chords, I didn't hear her ethereal vocals anymore

I'm up to my neck in things this month, and I don't have a guitar at the min to go through things, either.

I'll pop in a few phrases from time to time as time and memory allow me.

Here are some chords to think about--you know the drill--two chords and four counts per measure. Not exactly sure about the changes in the vicinity of the Ab in the bridge--you can do what I showed above, which will work, or try to follow one of the arrangements--I am sure Brendy can amend.

I am not sure about matching keys, none of the versions I had were in Am, which I got from the link above. So it goes. If you want fingering, let me know.
I'll check back tomorrow-

Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?

(Intro)
||:Am E+/Bm7-5 E7/Am E+ /F7 E7/
C Am/Bm7-5 E7/ Bm7-5 E7/E7 E7/:||
(verse)
|Am E+/ E7 A7/D7 G7/C C/
Bm7-5 E7/Am D7/F7 E7/Am E7/
Am E+/ E7 A7/D7 G7/C C/
Bm7-5 E7/Am D7/F7 E7/Am Am|

(bridge)
|A7 A7/Bb7 A7/Bb7 Bb7/A7 A7
D7 D7/Eb7 D7/Ab7 F7/B7 E7|

||Am E+/ E7 A7/D7 G7/C C/
Bm7-5 E7/Am D7/F7 E7/Am Am||

Yo! I sat down with my copy of 'Guitar Pro 4', and transcribed what I know them as.
I printed the tabs & notation to .PDF, and stuck them on the ex's old website ;-)

... She'll love me for that...!!!

I'll leave it up there for 7 days.

Enjoy.... and suggest changes... I only got them from listening to the recording... there's probably some 'madey upey' chords in among all of that.

Also... I didn't bother timing the chords too much; we all know the song....

Good arrangement, and very different than the one that I put up--I just listened to the Judy Collins version, and it is a real challenge to work out what and how the guitar part works.

This song has been done a lot of ways--the original way, Vallee/Crosby/Jolson was a sort of syncopated jazz march, the Death March for the Jazz Age, if you will--the Weavers turned it into a straight folk sounding thing(which was an amazing transition, considering how it had sounded) and there were lots of people who, at the same time, covered it as a Jazz/Lounge sort of tune--

The Judy Collins arrangement(I wonder who played guitar on it?) is great because it doesn't subordinate the message of the song to the performance (as the lounge versions tend to do), keeps the jazz flavor, and doesn't come off as a "nostalgia" piece--

However you decide to do it, CH, this is a great song, written by one of the truly great lyricists--and it speaks to every generation--

Thanks M.Ted. I only took it from the tape recording of it, but it works for me (...sort of...)

I said up the thread a bit that I thought the guitarist was Steve Goodman.
I'm certain it was him, now.

Anyway.... one version of it...
