Subject: Lyr Req: Beautiful Lilies, White as the Snow From: masato sakurai Date: 13 May 06 - 07:13 AM This song ("Beautiful Lilies, White as the Snow") has been sung as an Easter hymn ("Uruwashi no shirayuri") in Japan since 1903 (or earlier). It is said to have been written by Alice Jean Cleator, and composed by J. Lincoln Hall, but I can't find the original English words. I think it was an inspirational song or a Sunday school song. Midi I sequenced is here. Thanks in advance. ~Masato |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beautiful Lilies, White as the Snow From: masato sakurai Date: 15 May 06 - 10:27 PM Only one hymn by Alice Jean Cleator, "Hark, the Tramp of Coming Legions," is at The Cyber Hymnal. Several of her hymns are in Sunday School Hymns No. 1 (1903): "Hark, the Tramp of Coming Legions," "Daily We Are Sowing," "Forward, Christian Soldiers," "Little Deeds," "There's No Land Like Ours," "Who Will Be a Helper," and "Good-Night Little Flowers," but "Beautiful Lilies" isn't there. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beautiful Lilies, White as the Snow From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 15 May 06 - 10:35 PM Only one hymn by Alice Jean Cleator in the Cyberhymnal, published in 1903. All I can find is one of those Google 'translations' from a Japanese blog website. Peace, the Mormon children's songbook I think you saw has a number of songs by non-Mormons. She wrote several religious songs for children including "Be a Little Sunbeam," on the Website of the Woman's Missionary Union, an auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention. Masato, it may be in one of the song books in the list of Universalist Song and hymn books. See the annotated bibliography. Item 100, Colgrove, 1912, "Lessons from Nature's Voices," is a Sunday school songbook that contains 60 songs based on Nature, including at least one by Cleator. www.sksm.edu/research/papers/bibliography.pdf |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beautiful Lilies, White as the Snow From: Jim Dixon Date: 20 Nov 11 - 12:15 PM I found descriptions of these books by J. Lincoln Hall: "Boundless Love; A Book of Songs Prepared for Use in Sunday Schools, Evangelistic Services and Young Peoples' Meetings" by J. Lincoln Hall (Philadelphia: Hall-Mack Co., 1896; reprinted by General Books LLC, 2010) "Ideal Sunday School Hymns" edited and compiled by J. Lincoln Hall, Charles Austin Miles, & A. Geibel (New York : Hall-Mack, 1913) Google does not provide page images; and WorldCat.org does not provide a table of contents of either of those books. WorldCat.org might, however, help you find a copy in a library near you. |

Subject: ADD: Lilies of the Valley (Cleator/Lehman) From: rumanci Date: 16 Sep 12 - 09:30 AM Apologies - here's the complete version! LILIES OF THE VALLEY (Alice Jean Cleator & R. Frank Lehman) Lilies of the valley, White as drifted snow, With the summer's beauty, Now are bending low, How their wondrous incense, Ever seems to rise, Like a glad thanksgiving, To the summer skies. CHORUS Lilies of the valley, Seem to softly say, There is One more lovely, Fairer than the day, We are sent as symbols, Of the One above, Who is pure and spotless, And whose name is Love. Lilies of the valley, All in silence stand, Yet they breathe a lesson, In the summer land, O they tell the story, Old, yet always new, Of the King of glory, Ever pure and true.
