La Rusby has been singing dreary pop music most of her career and this is just the sort of bollocks her weedy simper deserves.

Ronan Keating asked Kate to sing a duet with him, this was a good opportunity for Kate to become more famous and for her music to be appreciated by a wider audience. There is no reason to think that after this duet with Ronan that she will abandon her folk roots and turn to pop.

"Turn down the light, turn up the radio, there's a fire in your eyes and it's keeping me warm......"

And then Melodeon Boy turns up and the fire goes out, just like it did on the BBC board when he turned up there, and the fRoots board when he turned up there...etc. etc.....

"This time can be like the first time, close your eyes and we soon will be there.."

*Right back there*....in The Arena at Sidmouth's 50th Festival, on a hot, sultry summer's evening...when Kate Rusby held nearly 5,000 people in the palm of her hand, for the entire evening, literally 'underneath the stars'...with her beautiful, gentle, individual voice....her warmth and her gorgeous humour.

"No man could ever guess what you're feeling...."

And there were many men, women and children....who fell in love with Kate that night...

I think it's wonderful that she's finally out there!

I watched her on Top Of The Pops, with my children 11 and 19, who already love her music..and I felt so very chuffed! She shone out amongst all those other pouting, tarty, self-obsessed bimbos....she looked nervous and sweet and Ronan took care of her and smiled right at her.....I think it'll be Number One shortly.

MAGIC!!!.......ROCK/POP/FOLK ON KATE!

And now I'm off to watch the video once more....and beam from ear to ear 'all over again'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kZnIbBrmJE&search=%22kate%20rusby%22

So....if anyone would care to join me....right here....in front of the fire...I'll just 'turn down the light' and........

"Come and step through the stars, take a ride through the universe, as long as we're here let's take the whole thing in....Because this time can be like the first time, close your eyes and soon we'll be there....Just like the first time that you touched my skin and I tasted heaven, take me there again......Your smile, your touch, your taste.....then I'll keep falling in love with you all over again"

'Turn a spark to a flame' and get right behind Kate......she's lighting the way into folk music for many people.

Oh! And put another log on the fire would you? ;0)

Lizzie
With respect, I think you are missing the point. Kate Rusby could hold any amount of people, in her hand, in any concert. She has the right to record any song she wishes, with any singer.
But she is special, when she does what she does best and she does not need to produce an ordinary pop song, to reach a wider audience

It might interest both "squeezeboxhp" and our ubiquitous "LC" that I have seen Kate Rusby perform on several occasions - and enjoyed it!; that I have forked out hard-earned money to buy her music because I enjoy listening to it, and that during the ten years that I worked as a radio presenter, I regularly played her music on my programme (admittedly, not quite as regularly as Mike Harding does!) because I thought it worthy of a wider audience.

My crime appears to be that I have stood up and said that ONE of her songs, i.e. the one in question, is awful. Let's get things in proportion, shall we?

Furthermore, "squeezeboxhp", it's all very well saying "If you can't say something nice, shut up", but this is a discussion forum, not a primary school newsletter. I don't intend to be offensive, but I do believe in speaking my mind. And my manners, by the way, are impeccable!

As for you, "LC", what can be done with you? As you are someone who appears on every message board that I've ever contributed to, and who posts probably ten times the number of messages that I do, it really is a case of the pot calling the kettle black when you complain about my "turning up" on different message boards.

If you check on the messages that I've posted to the forementioned message boards, you'll find that most of them are, in fact, not critical or negative as you imply. What you really object to is anyone who disagrees with your opinions or taste in music (I'm not the only one who's had to put up with your incessant bickering, by a long chalk). This, unfortunately, results in your matronly condemnation of any contributor who doesn't toe the LC line, which, ultimately, just wastes everyone's time.

Oh, Melodeon Boy....I think I lurve you! ;0)

WHY are you always SO angry????? If you don't like Kate's song...fair enough...it's a free world...but why be so OTT about it....there's froth appearing at the corner of your mouth.

You dislike the song....I love it! Each to their own....

Do grow up petal....and remember, just because the bullies are allowed to win, over and over on the R2 board, I can't answer you back over there anymore....but I sure can over here!

I wonder 'who' you are? Very glad *you* didn't offer to lay down in front of the fire with me though! Makes me come over proper poorly at the thought!

Chuckle! ;0)

Take care poppet!

Could we digress into some other unlikely pairings?

How about Martin Carthy and Shirley Bassey?

Or June Tabor and Des O'Connor?

Or Annie Briggs and Tom Jones? (Hang on, that last one might just work!)

Must confess myself underwhelmed by the Rusby/Keating offering. It might be an age thing. At least they didn't do another rendition of "Something Stupid" because that would have been!

LC writes,"If you don't like Kate's song...fair enough...it's a free world".

I agree 100% with this sentiment, "LC", but does this correspond exactly to some of your previous comments, on this and other threads, about those, including myself, who disagree with you?

And do take the trouble to distinguish between reasoned argument and anger!

I happen to think it's a rather lovely love song. I admit that the first time I heard it, I didn't remember the tune, but...having now heard it again and again..it's firmly, and happily embedded in the 'music' part of brain. (no jokes please!) ;0)

Shall I sing it to you MB? ;0)

You can disagree or agree, whatever you choose, but I've never liked the way that er..'certain people' seem to use messageboards for *purely negative* things, and not much else....and I'll continue to say so, as that's my 'right' too, although this may have escaped you.

"...I remember that moment, like being struck down by lightning, the first time I saw your face, and you smiled......"

No chance of that happening with us then eh Melly? ;0)

Unless of course, you listen to Kate and Ronan until your lil' ol' heart begins to soften. Tell you what, I'll meet you under that lampost...and I'll bring my guitar, then, as the rain softly falls you can stare into my eyes and.....

"....your smile, your touch, your taste.....it turns me on and on and on...then I'll fall in love with you, all over again..."

XX Melly XX

I just heard it and saw the video for the first time yesterday and went here to see what your reactions might be - god!!! Have you checked the fRoots board btw? It's mainly negative about that song...

I have to say that I like it and that I agree -once again- with harpmolly on the subject. Kate is still Kate, the way she sings and even in the video- it's all natural, no acting (I feared that they would pretend to be in love with each other or something!), just a little coffee-stirring and busking. I love that the director let her actually play guitar in the video and Ronan doesn't play anything - she's a real musician and that comes across...

It's in no way world-changing, but it isn't bad musically. And their voices really blend well, something that IMHO seldom happend with the male singers she chose for her records - famous folk singers though they are ;-) The best duet with a male singer was with Davy Steele on Hourglass. I really don't like the duets on Sleepless, all of them, tough I like the singers. I know that a lot of people seem to like the one with Roddy Woomble, but I think their voices don't complement each other very well.
I know I'm drifting apart from the subject but there never was a better combination than singing with Eddi Reader on Little Lights!!

What I really would like to hear is a duet with Alison Krauss!!!

Back to the subject: If I had never come across KR so far and then heard and saw her with Ronan Keating, I would instantly go to iTunes or something and listen to some of her own songs. And have you seen the live clips from the "Princes Trust" concert? She gets extra applause during the song, and that doesn't sound like ten folkies cheering 'Hi Kate'! So I think it's good that she did it, and even better that she did it her way and I'm really curious where it will take her. She is very very clever, business-wise, and I think she will get a lot out of that for her own career.

I can understand people having opinions, but what I cannot agree with is abusive language - GuestDB, Melodeon boy, Growler, please could we refrain from swearing - argue if you must but is there any real need for bad language.

As I said before I don't think Ronan will sing with Kate again because you can see she has the more dominant voice.........at any volume!

Well, "MBSGeorge", I apologise if I've offended you; that was not my intention. I agree that I'm opinionated, and that I express my opinions forcefully, but I don't think I can be classed as abusive.

A glance at my (not inconsiderable) input to this thread reveals that I have used a mere two words which might be deemed unsuitable for polite society, both of which have letters asterisked out for the benefit of sensitive souls!

Lea--oooh, Kate and Alison, I'd pay good money to see/hear that too. Maybe a little Dan Tyminski for a nice tenor line. Mmmmmmm, yummy. They could do one of those ballads that's drifted over the pond and is sung by English and American trad folkies alike :)

I do have to disagree with you on the Sleepless duets, though. "All God's Angels" with Tim O'Brien...ooh la la!   I still get a little quivery when I listen to that one, even though it's one of hte most depressing songs ever. Ah, Kate. Such a mischievous spirit singing such sad songs--one of the most interesting personality contradictions I've come across. But I, too, really love the blending of her voice with Eddi Reader's. It's like Kat Eggleston singing with Niamh Parsons on her new album--really wonderful stuff.

Molly

P.S. Maybe they didn't create a romantic connection in the video because John McCusker was skulking around behind the camera with his wispy little mohawk and glowering at Ronan threateningly. "No wee blond Irish git is going to be snuggling up to my wife on camera!" (OK, yes, I'm sorry, the mohawk comment was uncalled for, but come on now, admit it...it just looks silly.)

Maybe if she gets more famous now, one day the dream-duet with Alison will happen :-) at least Jerry Douglas seems to know some of the irish/english gang, he recorded with Altan fiddler Ciaran Tourish last year on Ciaran's solo album and he plays a tune written by Donal Lunny on the Live album of AK and Union Station...

Yes, Dan Tyminski would be grand, too. Ooh how I like his version of "The boy who wouldn't hoe corn"!!!!!!!!!!
Btw, I heard rumours that Kate & John split up...?

Ah yes...AK&US Live is one of my household staples. For some reason I love listening to it while I wash the dishes...nice and bouncy.

Hmmm...where on earth did you hear that rumor? I'd be surprised if that were true. Though I must confess I often find him rather pompous (and I don't like the way he makes fun of her onstage, to be perfectly frank), I can't imagine them splitting up. Who is going to produce all her albums? ;)

Hmmm... a friend of mine knows friends of them quite well... I think it *is* true but I think I shouldn't say more, because they will surely want to keep it as private as possible. But as far as I know they split up some time ago but still play music together and all that stuff, so they seem to get along quite well.

But I too am curious if John will produce her next album! It's always good to get some new ideas.. hehe maybe she will do a pop album next - now that she'll become famous ;-) (only joking)...

Oooh, I'm so frustrated!

iTunes has an "Acoustic" version of this song, WAY less pop-influenced, but it's only in the UK store. And for some reason, I can't access the UK store with a US account. I don't really see why--it's a digital download for God's sake. (Although I suppose for them, 79 pence probably isn't worth the currency conversion. ;))

What's really bizarre is that, as pathetic as the US store is for Kate Rusby (they've got "Hourglass" and that's IT...hello people, she's been doing this over ten years!) the UK store has nothing. Zip. Nada. It doesn't even know she exists. How can this be?

Grrr....

To my mind, if I ignore RK's singing, it sound's just like a Rusby song anyway, but with a different backing band. So a major departure? I don't think so, just a different avenue.

Yay!

Not sure who you are, Dean, but thanks for resurrecting this thread. Gawd it's full of old grouches though. ;0)

My link to Kate and Ronan, above, no longer works, but....I found another one...YIPPEE!

'All Over Again' - Kate and Ronan

I love this song..it's so romantic.

"Hold on to me, just like it was yesterday, when we both felt our spirits collide..."

"Come and lay down, feel the space that's between us, feel the magic..."

"this time can be like the first time, close your eyes and soon we'll be there....."

And the fire flickered as the two lovers collided, once more....

"Your smile, your touch, your taste..........."

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm .... :0)

I thought it was very full of possitive comments myself! Everyone, as far as I can see, has wished her the best. Even those who don't like the song as such. I think you may be getting mixed up with another board. Maybe I am reading it wrong:-( Can anyone show me where all the old grouches are?

I am glad the thread was refreshed as well though - FWIW I quite like both of them to listen to but would not buy any because it is not exactly my cup of tea.

As I have not really 'followed' any artist in a long time, does anyone know whether Kate has gone any further with her 'pop' stuff? I notice she did tne music for 'Jam and Jerusalem' but aside from that I have not really seen her in the mainstream. But, as I said, NME is a thing of the past for me so what do I know;-)

Cheers

DeG

I'd say he was something of an authority.
