Subject: BS: Stuck in a folk song? From: Bunnahabhain Date: 17 May 06 - 04:50 PM I was just stuck by a worrying co-incidence.....My better half lives on the waterside and it's the merry month of May. Should I ask her to stay in for the next two weeks, or doesn't going to the Lab and the shops count as roving? I don't wan't to end up with a doleful ghost! Anyone else in dangerously sterotypical situations? |

Subject: RE: BS: Stuck in a folk song? From: michaelr Date: 17 May 06 - 09:10 PM As I rode out this morning, all in the month of May, I met --- wait for it! my boss as soon as I got to work. Oh well, no song there... just the same old song and dance, my friend. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: BS: Stuck in a folk song? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 May 06 - 04:42 AM I saw twa' corbies on my way in to work this morning. Bit ominous if you ask me... On a lighter note if you ever get chance try to catch Stanley Accrington then ask him to do his song that mentions all the situations you can think of in popular folk song in one seemingly breathless verse - I think the title is something like 'Stuck in folk song' or 'Only in folk song'. Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Stuck in a folk song? From: Tannywheeler Date: 18 May 06 - 08:36 AM By-the-by, friends--what breed of bird is a "corbie"??? If it's crows I may be in real trouble. We gottem in Cedar Creek, Texas. Step out of any door and see SEVERAL... Tw |

Subject: RE: BS: Stuck in a folk song? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 May 06 - 10:02 AM It is indeed a type of crow but in context the corbies refered to in the song will be carrion crows or ravens. Incidentaly - What is the difference between a crow and a rook? An old saying I heard said a rook on it's own is crow. A crow in a crowd is a rook. Is this the only difference? Crows are solitary while rooks are social? DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Stuck in a folk song? From: catspaw49 Date: 18 May 06 - 10:16 AM I dunno'........Ya' gotta' be prepared for such eventualities. Karen and I have walked for many miles along the banks of the Ohio River and embraced often as we watched the river flow by. I'll be damned but I have never remembered to bring a knife............screwed the whole song up...........'Course my name ain't "Willie" either................I mean like I got one and all but that isn't my name.......I suppose I could "stab" her with my Willie but that'd involve floundering around in the weeds and bushes and possibly getting poison ivy..........or arrested for Indecent Exposure.............Karen is really allergic to Poison Ivy........... Subject: RE: BS: Stuck in a folk song? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 18 May 06 - 03:53 PM Crows have big black beaks like a pickaxe, rooks have a bit of unfeathered skin at the base of a paler beak. See here for a quick guide. If I'm stuck in a folk song, it's the one where the mother wants to stick penknives in her babby's heid. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Stuck in a folk song? From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 18 May 06 - 04:39 PM 'Crow' is the generic term for all members of the genus corvidae Hence the name 'corbie,' which they are still called in parts of the Borders and Northumbria. The Carrion Crow is usually the one meant by 'crow' in Britain. I believe the Hooded Crow may be commoner in Ireland. Most 'crows' in North America are the American Crow but here on Vancouver Island our 'crow' is the Northwestern Crow. Chough Carrion Crow Rook Raven Jay Jackdaw Magpie Blue Jay Stellers Jay Northwestern Crow others? But they'll all ha' yer een should yer true love be false. |
