I'm looking for the tune from Thornton Wilde's "The Matchmaker".

It's the song that Irene Molloy sings, and the lyrics in the script are:

So remember while you can
What became of Nelly Ann
Who trusted in the promise of a drinking man

Any help in identifying this song would be great.

Thanks!

First off, Thornton Wilder wrote The Matchmaker, later the basis for the musical Hello Dolly.

Secondly - and I'm sure this won't really help - I have a vague memory of seeing a community theatre production many years ago in which the tune "Rally 'Round the Flag" was used with the above lyrics.

But it would seem implausible, though, that Wilder would use lyrics from a song that didn't exist!

It must be out there, somewhere...

Jay

I think it likely that Wilder wrote it himself. That way, if the song becomes a hit, he makes money, and making money is a legitimate goal for a playwright.

Get hold of a copy of the play and see what it says.
