Grand Ole Opry legend Billy Walker and three others were killed early
Sunday when a van in which they were riding ran off Interstate 65 south of Montgomery and overturned.

Alabama state troopers said the 77-year-old Walker, Bettie Walker, 61,
and Charles Lilly Jr. 44, all of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Daniel
Patton Sr. 40, of Hermitage, Tenn., died in the crash.

Joshua Brooks, 21, also of Hendersonville was injured. His condition
was not immediately available.

A trooper spokesman said the group was in a 1996 Chevrolet van that ran off I-65 about 11 miles north of Ft. Deposit. The spokesman had no
details on where they had traveled.

According to the Opry's website, Billy Walker was born in Ralls, Texas, and built an early career as the "Traveling Texan, the Masked Singer of Country Songs" and later shared the stage with Elvis Presley.

He had his first No. 1 song in 1962, "Charlie's Shoes," which was
followed by other hits, "Willie the Weeper," "Heart, Be Careful," "The
Morning Paper" and the Western-tinged "Cross the Brazos at Waco."

Walker joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1960.

My wife just read me his obit from the Star-Telegram and asked me who
he was. I've been in Texas for thirty years and have never heard of him. I told her that there are some who make it to the Grand Ole Opry and just sort of stay there - guess that's what he did. Know him or not, we'll miss him - always miss the bretheren when they go.
Farewell, Mr. Walker.

Was shocked to hear the sad news. We saw Billy Walker the first time in Branson,Mo. and then when he came to our Country Opry in Petersburg, Illinois we would see him there. He was not only a great legend in his time but a wonderful person. He shall be missed deeply.

We are shcoked and saddened by this terrible loss to their familes and to Billy Walker's fans, I thought he was one of the best. I really enjoyed seeing him on TV appearances and from all I have heard, he was just as nice in person as he seemed on stage. He was a wonderful singer and we shall all miss him greatly.

Talk about shock! I live in a very small Mich. city. I was just looking up some country singers(4 yrs later) and saw Billys obit!
We did not know here, about the accident. Billy and Betti was very
gracious to send me a special song I requested at4 concerts. Guess
they got tired of me whining or they were just darn nice people!!
I'll cherish it forever and the note sent! Now to get a picture!
