Just thought I would post this. It was announced on Folkwaves last night.
I had spoken with Ed on several occasions and visited Smithy Cafe in Monyash Derbyshire which was owned by him and his wife.
Ed ran folk evenings in his cafe on occasions, as well as being a musician.
Don'tknow a lot more about him, but RIP Ed

Not sure of how many mudcatters have met Ed, but felt it would be amiss not to post this on Mudcat.

As well as a lot of folkies many walkers and bikers will be sorry to hear of Ed's passing. The Smithy was an essential place to stop prior to tackling Lathkildale.

As I've been working away this week, I didn't hear about the sad loss until my wife remembered she'd heard it on Folkwaves when she was on the phone to me yesterday morning. I'm absolutely devasted by it!
Took two young'uns for a walk starting from Moneyash a couple of weeks ago and called in for a meal on return. Ed looked fine then and we had a chat about the way he'd built up the business and how, in the early days fo the cafe, he took up my suggestion of providing big pint mugs of tea!
Condolences to the family, he's going to be a sad loss to a lot of people and I hope they keep the cafe going!
Bob

I can only add to what has already been said. Ed was a lovely, gentle man, a talented musician and singer and he cooked the best veggie breakfast in the Peak District!

We understand that with the support of his beautiful wife, Ruth and their wonderful boys that the cafe and its folk nights will continue.

He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends and will leave a huge 'Ed shaped' hole in the life of Monyash village.

Our love and sympathy to everyone who knew him.

Alison and Lesley x

His funeral is on Thursday June 1st at 3pm in Monyash Church.

Ed was a real true mate. I spent many happy hours singing with him as part as of Smithy's Brew (along with John Burton). In recent years we have also spent time together on the golf course. His passing is devastating - he is irreplacable and I will always miss him.
