I'm thinking about a road trip, and have never really seen this part of NC before. Anyone spent time here and want to recommend things to do and places to see and stay?

We're interested in music (big surprise!), food (bigger surprise!) and laid-back wandering. B and B type stuff, but not luxurious.

Dani

Ahhhhh, Ashville I can't talk much about but Boone is purdy cool... The downtown is real funky with an ol' pharmacy with a lunch counter where you can still get luch fir under 4 bucks... Boone is a tad difficult to get around, however, so be prepared to be a little frustrated... Applicaian State University is there which adds to the traffic...

Ummm, right up hill from that pharancy is a cool guitar shop... Can't remember the name but it's in the basement... Nice guy runs it and sells some locally made guitars which play real good... Now if ya find that you head up hill until you come a steet that runs to the left and downhill... I think there's an old hardware store on the toher side of the street... This joint will consrtuct any snadwich you can think of... I mean, anything... Fine place and cheap...

Now round Boone is lots of mountains with lots of cabins and houses that folks winter at so they can ski and do winter stuff...

Oh, take a side trip to Blowing Rock which is less than an hour, okay maybe an hour.,.. This town is is the funnest town around... Cool shops... Cool setting... Just flat out cool...

Bobert

Dani, the best music in Asheville is at the Jack O' The woods Pub near the square or even outdoors in a couple locations the locals play bluegrass in the evenings. You might happen on to some excellent entertainment at Jack O' the woods. Jimmyt

Dani,

Jack o the woods is good, and smoke free. Here's a link to jam sessions almost every night in the area.

http://www.warren-wilson.edu/~appmusic/Calendar.html

http://www.thegreyeagle.com/ is another good venue.

http://www.asheville.com/entertainment/ is good listing.

We love it, Dani,

hope to see you soon
Chance

I worked for a summer in Hendersonville (about 30 miles south of Asheville) and I'm still mad that I wasn't there on my own time. It's a GORGEOUS area and the weather is pretty decent in the summer.

I didn't get to see a lot but I know there's a park (state park?) in Brevard, and lots of entertaining roadside novelties all over the place.

Should have thought to ask YOU GUYS, Chance!

Thanks, all. We don't get out much ; ) and I challenged my daughters each to research someplace for a visit, and this was mine. The others are Charlottesville and Charleston. I'll let you know which wins out, and secretly hope we get to go to all 3 soon.

Dani

Dani--I assume you are not looking for the most remote hollow to walk up to camp, or you would have already called my hubby.

May I suggest a long slow drive along the NC section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, stopping at every interesting spot? The Linville gorge, Shining Rock, Mt. Mitchell, Nantahalia gorge, etc. etc. are all quite worth seeing. Then you can drive through Linville and gawk at all the expensive second homes and piddle around in downtown Asheville, Boone, Blowing Rock, Brevard, et. al.

I was just in this area last month while attending Merlefest (one of the best festivals I've ever been to) and it really is beautiful and wonderful. Had a friend who drove us all around Boone and Blowing Rock, as well as through a 40 mile stretch of the gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway. Had lunch in Blowing Rock at a little sandwich shop called Kojay's which was excellent. Watch out for the desserts...

(By the way, the blickifier doesn't work. Keeps adding mudcat to the URL).

Do they still do that old-timey thing at Old Fort? One of the highlights of our trip back in 2000 or so.

From our experience, it rains all the time in NC. Couldn't see a thing from the top of Mount Mitchell.

Dani,

Charleston is also a great town, old town especially. Aside from the great restaurants there is a very nice beach, Folly Beach.

We toy with the idea of retiring to the Asheville area (we just bought a house down there), but having a little condo at the beach in charleston, since it's not a bad drive down I26.

Charlottesville, in my opinion doesn't compare to either, but nearby Monticello is worth a visit, it's filled with interesting Jeffersonia.

best, chance.

Thanks for the tips!

Chance, I actually lived in Charleston for a while, my eldest was born there. Loved it very much. Worked near Folly, at the Country Club of Charleston pre-Hugo, and also downtown. That may well be where we end up, a little personal history mixed some lovely scenery ; )

My feeling about Charlottesville (Allan C, forgive me) is that it's very much like Chapel Hill, except for Monticello, which WOULD be cool to see.

Paul, it sure don't rain enough in the Piedmont, but I guess I can see how it would in the mountains. Give it another shot!

Dani
