Subject: RE: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: Ellenpoly Date: 25 May 06 - 05:03 AM Thanks so much for all your input. Some of it I followed, and some not, such as degaussing which makes no sense to me, I'm sorry to say. I've been online today for a couple of hours and no sign of the pink-sorry, magenta, has come back, so maybe it's a connection issue since I did just recently move my tower and it could have been enough to jiggle something around. I'll make note of all you've offered here and see what develops. (I live in London, by the way, so thanks for the US advice but prices here are quite a bit higher and my only real recourse is the computer fayre down in the city, which intimidates me a bit when I've been there. (Lots of men smoking lots of cigarettes and most speaking with accents sounding eastern european and middle-eastern.) I only mention this because women are few and far between and I have the feeling I'd better know what I need exactly or I'm likely to run into trouble, price-wise.) I've never heard of freecycle, Richard, but I'll google it and see what comes up. Again, thanks so much for all your advice. -Ellen |

Subject: RE: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 May 06 - 04:36 PM try freecycle. Failing that you should be able to get a second hand 17" CRT for about 20 quid. 15" - about a tenner smaller, it ought to be given away.... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: s&r Date: 24 May 06 - 03:56 PM In addition to what John said, if you know anyone with a little bit of skill in these areas get them to reseat the crt base. The pins are heated by the tube, and cool when it's off. If you don't know what you're doing though, don't take the back off yourself. Stu |
Subject: RE: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 24 May 06 - 03:42 PM If "tapping" the monitor "cured" the problem, I'd think the monitor is most likely to be the problem, or perhaps the cable/connector, close to the monitor. I wouldn't for example expext the graphics card in my tower case to be in any way influenced by a "normal blow" to the monitor. You may be able to get a better clue by jiggling the cable and seeing if that has any effect. As grab said, there is no telling how long a monitor will last after developing such problems. I got around year from the last one I had that started acting up but I knew it could go at any time. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: JohnInKansas Date: 24 May 06 - 02:10 PM The "good" possibility: When a single color goes, and expecially when it comes back with a bit of jiggle, it could be just a bad contact in the connector. When a connector stays plugged in for a long time without being moved, some corrosion accumulates on everything that isn't a metal-to-metal contact. A slight wiggle, which you may not have noticed could have moved the contact point on the "green" pin enough to break the electrical contact, and your subsequent wiggle either returned the contact to where it had been, or possible wiped the crud off so that good contact happened at some new place. Unless you get recurring symptoms, I'd wiggle the connector and see if it keeps working. The "not so good" possibility: Your monitor or the graphics adapter inside the computer may be on the verge of dying of old age. If your computer (and monitor) are less than 5 - 7 years old, the computer most likely has some sort of fairly high-falutin' graphics adapter. It may be on a separate card, or may be built into the motherboard. The chipsets used on these boards tend to run fairly hot, and unless you have a really sophisticated one, don't have any separate cooling - so they cook themselves. Symptoms when one starts to go are quite variable, but almost anything "funny" about the way the monitor looks could be due to the graphics adapter. If it gets worse, you can check on whether it's the graphics adapter by using Hardware Manager to disable it. Windows should have a default basic driver to turn the monitor on without using the adapter. If the monitor is stable with the graphics adapter disabled, you probably need to replace the adapter rather than the monitor. Note that the default driver may not provide the same resolution you've been using, so the screen may be "ugly," but if the picture is stable, it's the card that's causing the problem. If turning off the graphics adapter doesn't help, it's probably the monitor itself, although it's really hard to be absolutely sure without real test equipment. I would suggest NOT messing with the adapter unless you get a serious and persistent failure, and before you disable the graphics adapter be sure you have your fix-it disks to re-install it if necessary. Windows probably will still have the drivers "on file" on your hard drive to do the replacement, but it might ask for the disk. Should hardware changes be necessary, good graphics adapter cards are available in my area at retail shops for aroung $50 - $60 (US), although the popular ones run about twice that. You probably can find something cheaper on the web with a little searching. A recent article claims you can get pretty good 19" flat panel monitors now for $200 (US) or so. I haven't even received the magazine this article is in yet, so I haven't read it; but if you need one it might help you to have an idea what's available (cheap). These may not be what you want, but I believe the article identifies some web sources that might have relatively low prices on other monitors. John |
Subject: RE: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: GUEST Date: 24 May 06 - 02:03 PM 'Screen colours are made of three colours, these are delivered down different pins on the monitor cable, if the blue pin became damaged the result would look like a pink screen - did you unplug your monitor recently? if so I suspect that at least one of the pins is not making its proper contact. Have a good close look at the data cable from the PC to the monitor' |

Subject: RE: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: DMcG Date: 24 May 06 - 01:56 PM I have the same problem occasionally. The lead from my monitor to my PC is sealed at the monitor end, and therefore cannot be changed. There is a bad connection somewhere in it so that if the cable is moved, the screen goes pink. Fiddle with it and the colours are restored. It is not serious enough for me to change the monitor, but it is a pain if I have to move the base unit for some reason. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: Rapparee Date: 24 May 06 - 01:29 PM I'd try degaussing first, and then look around for a reconditioned monitor. Prices have greatly fallen, especially on the CRT models, and you can even get a new on for under US $125 that would work. If that's too much, check out thrift stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army (or the English equivalents). They're often give working monitors -- but make sure that it works and that if it doesn't you can take it back. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: Grab Date: 24 May 06 - 01:24 PM White on the screen is made from all three of the red, green and blue beams in your monitor. Technically, the colour you got is called magenta, and it's made from red and blue light. So this means that the green beam in your monitor is on the fritz. Either the physical bits that produce the beam, or the various electrical/electronic bits that make it happen, are dying. If it comes back with "percussive maintenance", I'd suspect the latter. If you were feeling enthusiastic, you could open up the monitor and try resoldering every connection, but that's not something I'd recommend to anyone who's not an expert, and there's always the risk anyway that you'll bugger it permanently. So I'm afraid your monitor's on the way out. As the line goes "maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon". It could last for another couple of years, or it could go next week. It's not going to affect the PC itself, but you're going to get a really spectacular case of eye strain if you use it like that for any length of time. If your area is anything like where I am, there'll be a few second-hand computer places around who'll sell you a monitor for not too much. Checking Dabs, you can get a brand-new 17" monitor for £78 - recon ones will probably vary from £20 to £50 depending on quality and size. That shouldn't break the bank, especially since you've got the warning now to start saving up. Graham. |

Subject: Tech: Pink Screen?? From: Ellenpoly Date: 24 May 06 - 12:32 PM I'm just wondering if any of you techno wizards can tell me what to do about this. Out of nowhere, my computer screen went pink on me. I kind of tapped a bit and it eventually went back to normal, but I don't think this can be a good thing. It's an old computer monitor, but I'd like to save it if at all possible, having no money to replace it at the moment or forseeable future unless I have no choice and no options. So, what's the deal? Can I just jiggle it back to normal and hope it'll stay that way, or is this the first sign of a dying monitor? Thanks so much in advance for your help! -Ellen PS-(If necessary, can I just keep using it shaded pink??) |
