Subject: From Max: Mudcat Update
From: Max

Here's half an update. The other half is at least a week or two away.

First, today I am having Fiber Optics installed to my house in an effort to improve reliability. 9 out of 10 times that the Mudcat is down is due to our ADSL line losing its connection. After replacing my router 3 times, it is clear that no router can help.

Fiber Optics is a small capital investment. It'll cost me a few hundred dollars extra for June, but assuming all goes well, it will save me about $150 per month from that point forward. A no-brainer really.

Secondly, Emily and I are expecting our 2nd child (I have a daughter, Alexis now 16, from a previous marriage). Looks to be a November baby. All is well so far with the baby, but Emily gets very ill with pregnancy, so this will certainly be our last child. We're toughing through it all pretty well, Emily is one tough cookie. Lily is very excited to have a sibling. Won't know if its a boy or girl till it pops out.

Jeff and I have begun the task of fixing some of the problems with the mudcat as well as implementing a few new features to combat certain annoyances. I will explain more in a week or two.

I think I'm forgetting at least one more thing, but I guess I can post it later.
Cheers.

Congratulations on your good (personal) news.
Anything you do for The 'Cat is greatly appreciated by the greater (if less voiciferous) majority.
Keep up the good work, but not at any cost of neglecting Emily or Lily

All the best

FYI, there will likely be small inconsistencies while we transition to the new Fiber Optic network. The DNS changes may take 24 to 26 hours. I began them tonight, so the clock is ticking.

Our new IP is 71.162.244.125

Thank the great Thunder God that no one is really explaining what this change really is in terms of thermodynamics, the fiber optic thing, not the baby. I never could quite grasp the theory behind thermodynamics, let alone any application to real life. I was initially intrigued by the Heisinberg Uncertainty Principle and Planck's Constant, which as I recollect if the Constant were rather larger than claimed I might not even be able to find my way back home reliably sober. That reminds me of an old song called "Charlie the Midnight Marauder," I wonder why?

Anyway, JudyB was essentially correct, but let me extend my best wishes to the successful implementation of the great cosmic muffin and your growing family.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Great news on all fronts! Hope it all goes smoothly, especially for Emily. I'm still trying to imagine the poor kid being called Cletus, though. Anyway, my contribution to Mudcat is coming via Sandra and Dick Greenhaus.

The combination of those two bits of news keeps running through my head - there must be a song in there somewhere!

Warmest congratulations and heartfelt thanks Max.... at least now we know SOMEONE has other things to do when the 'Cat is in the litter box.

I got through pots and pots of stem ginger, ginger preserve and olives to quell my sickness whilst pregnant - not together of course.... that would be just plain silly.... but ginger helps settle an upset stomach and the olives took away the nasty taste in my mouth. Believe me, there will come a time (usually at about 3.30am, when you're holding her hair out the way over the sink) when you will try ANYTHING to try and stop the nausea.

Good luck and take care.

LTS

BillD-

A baby haulin' shanty, or launching shanty? I'll have to think about that one. Now if Max and his darling Emily would call the kid "Joe" or "Rosie" we could certainly work something up rather briskly.

However, I'm not entirely convinced that such shanty singing would be welcome at the actual birth. Frankly it scares me just to think of it!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Alright, Emily--ginger, the pithy part of an orange--do you already know about soda crackers? They helped me some. Awful to carry a baby during the hottest part of the year, but apparently that'll be the earlier part of the pregnancy. I had one at the end of August in Austin, Texas. God--the heat and exhaustion--but got over piddlin' tummy upset early, so didn't have to suffer that too much.

Congratulations, Max!!

As for the criticism, most of it is well intentioned, and some of it actually makes good sense. The whiners and malcontents, as far as I'm concerned, can take a long run off a short pier. You have created something extraordinary, and in my case it is not too much to say, life transforming. How else could I have got to make friends from Simcoe County, Ontario to North Carolina to England, Scotland and Germany? How else could I have found a home away from home in the Press Room in Portsmouth, NH? What are the chances I would ever have been able to sing with people like Bonnie Milner, Joy Bennett, Heather Wood, John Roberts, Kendall Morse and Jeff Warner? What was the likelihood of me being able to learn German outlaw songs from Wolfgang and Wilfried Schaum, or walk into a session full of complete strangers in France and find myself immediately at home?

You are doing great work and don't let anybody tell you different.

Edmund

Jeff and I have made massive progress on the mudcat fixes. We're excited again, and can't wait to finish it. How about that? Since June 1, we've been up and running very very close to 100%.

On morning sickness, I always found salty crisps (chips in US) did the job. I'd discovered it for car sickness as a child - and still resort to them on mornings after I've had a bit too much to drink.

Ginger (I like the candied stuff) helps with nausea, too, but I don't know how good it is for morning sickness. Did you say when the baby's due? (I know the liklihood that question will be answered is pretty slim, since 1) Max has choo-choo-chooed to Chatanooga, and 2) It's Max I'm askin'.

I remember you two running off for an illegal ocean skinny-dip in the night during Annamill's wedding reception. It's hard to imagine the two of you acting like adults. I hope it's not a constant state.

I seem to notice the rapid-fire (as in 10-15 in a row in the same thread within a minute or two) spam has diminished. If that's related to your work, thanks! If one of the things included in "implementing a few new features to combat certain annoyances" involves methods to reduce trolling and sniper attacks, I'd be happy.

In any case, have fun and stay cool.

At this point in a more advanced pregnancy and this time of year the problems are more likely water retention and keeping the electrolytes in good order than morning sickness. A healthy, varied diet rather than chugging Gatorade is going to make the difference. I discovered that vitamin B-6 and eating small amounts of protien during the day helped, especially when it came to preventing the elephant ankles that can occur with the heat and retention.

Kat, it was in NJ in - was it 2000? It was when annap became annamill. It was on the beach, and I remember the guy who ran over Bruce Springsteen's dog (because he'd written a song about it) was there, and Roger in Baltimore was there, and Bert, and we helped them move into their new house. It was great, but every time I was at her place, whenever and wherever that was, was great.
