I was just listening to Ralph McTell's 'Mr Connaughton' and I thought how wonderful it was to hear a song that is just saying thank you to a man he remembered from his childhood. I was wondering if anyone could think of any other songs whose main theme is gratitude. The only one that sprang to mind from the tradition is the Lakes of Ponchartrain but there must be more out there. Any suggestions?

LOTS of religious songs have this theme. Do you need specific songs?

Gracias al la Vida, I think it is called. I heard Joan Baez sing it.

Art Garfunkel sings "Grateful" by John Bucchino. It's on a CD included in a book with the same title. Very tender.

Well, by Bob Dylan we have:

You Angel You
I'll Remember You
I Believe In You
Precious Angel
You Changed My Life

And probably a few others too...

There's some sort of religious song I heard once with "Count your blessings" in the chorus. I remember it made me angry when I heard it, because it was being sung to a group of seniors in a Senior's Home. I was there visiting my grandmother, who was anything but happy about the changes in her life that forced her to live in the home. The song jarred with her circumstances at the time, or at least - that was my impression at the time. Maybe at other times, the song would be positive.

I do like the song "Keep on the sunny side of life", though, even though I'm not religious. I like the attitude of it. Another good one is Pete Seeger's "Precious Friend"

Bill Boazman's gorgeous "Bless These Children" is far and away the most moving song of gratitude I have ever heard. Regrettably, I am one of the very few here, who has ever heard of him. He is a modest, fulfilled and unambitious man, who will never seek attention. I respect him for that, but I do think it is a shame that so few people will ever be touched by this wonderful song.

It is true that that is the kind of advice best given to *oneself*.
