I've been trying to remember the lyrics to Homer & Jethro's song that went:

Kooliger was a wooden indian ...

Anybody know it?

I was just thinking the same thing the other day. The part I remember was in the chorus,

"It's no wonder that his face was red, Koliger had termites in his head."

My father had this LP in the sixties and this was in fact the first version of Kawliga that I ever heard. I still can't listen to the original without thinking of this chorus. (Sorry Hank).

My dad moved back to Ireland and left me some of his LP's. I know that I have at least one Homer & Jethro, although I don't think it's the one with this classic. I will check tonight and if I have it I will post the lyrics.

Steve

Here are the words to Kooliger as well as I can remember. There are some blanks and question marks. Can anyone help fill it in?

KOOLIGER THE WOODEN INDIAN

Kooliger was a wooden Indian, he didn't know what to do.
He fell in love with an Indian maid and she was wood 'un too.
Kooliger, eyoow!
He loved that maid with all his heart and soul.
But he was low man on the totem pole.

Poor old Kooliger, he never got a kiss.
Poor old Kooliger, he don't know what he missed.
Is it any wonder that his face is red?
Kooliger's got termites in his head.

She was the daughter of Settin' Bull, this wooden Indian dame.
She told old Kooliger Squatin' Heifer was her name.
Kooliger, eyoow!
. . . . ?????

Poor old Kooliger, he finally got a kiss.
Poor old Kooliger, ??????
Is it any wonder that his face is red?
Kooliger's got termites in his head.

Kooliger never milked the cows. He didn't have the pull.
He'd set the bucket under them and pump the bucket full.
In the morning when they'd see him coming they would wail,
"Here comes old icy fingers with his pail."

Poor old Kooliger he finally got a wife.
She made him shave his whiskers off with a huntin' knife.
Is it any wonder he ain't around today?
He shaved too close and whittled hisself away!

Eyuo, eyuo, eyuo!

Funny thing! I happened to be vacuuming today and, "POP!" this song was flowing from my lips! No harm done though with the vacuum running!! :-)

OK I'll try again

The song is Kaw-liga by Hank Williams as hinted at above. The words - either version are probably available on line.

Hoot

Just yesterday, I was thinking about good ole Homer & Jethro & some of my favs of theirs. "He didn't like her apartment so she knocked him flat" was a truly great one. However, The Billboard Song is what was rolling around in my head-appropriate, unfortunately, for these days of cyclones & hurricanes & tornadoes.

Here you go.....

Kooliger
Homer & Jethro

Kooliger was a wooden indian didn't know what to do
He fell in love with a indian maiden she was wooden too   Kooliger (whoo)
Loved that indian maiden with all his soul
But he was low man on the totem pole
She was the daughter of sittin bull this wooden indian dame
She told ole koolige r "Squattin' Heifer" was her name   Kooliger(whoo)
When he tried to hold her many charms
Kooliger he got splinters in his arms.

Pore ole Kooliger finally got a kiss
Pore ole Kooliger wished that he had missed
Is it any wonder that his face was red
Kooliger had termites in his head

Kooliger never milks the cows
He didn't have the pull
He set a bucket under them and pumped the bucket full …Kooliger (whoo)
When the cows would hear him they would wail
Here comes ole lizey fingers with his pail
When he sang peter conttontail the rabbit never cheers
He takes the cotton from his tail
And stuffs it in his ears ….Kooliger (whoo)
Sprayed his throat to help his voice each day
But all it did was keep the flies away

Pore ole Kooliger he finally got a wife
She made him shave his whiskers off with his huntin' knife
Pore ole Kooliger he ain't around today
He shaved to close and whittled himself away

I'd like to make a couple corrections to the post by "Guest" made on 05 Aug 11 - 07:39 PM
"ole lizey fingers" should read "ol' icy fingers".
Also after the last line should be the single word "Ugh".
Additionally I've always thought the words identified as "didn't have the pull" were actually "didn't kno' how to pull".

This song has a lot to answer for - Tommy Steele (then Hicks) heard it in the USA while serving in the Merchant Navy, then came home and spearheaded early British rock 'n roll.

The definitive correct lyrics—and correct title—for this song were posted by Gene back on 21-July-1999 in another thread, here: PORE OL' KOO-LIGER.

In the same thread, earlier the same day, Katlaughing posted the lyrics for the original song of which this is a parody: KAW-LIGA.

At the Internet Archive, you can hear a very clear recording and see an image of the record label: PORE OL' KOO-LIGER.
