Hello,
This is my first thread on mudcat. I've been viewing and using the site for a while but have only now copped on and registered.
So, here's the question: Can u list your top 5 new (or just in general) folk artists on the scene?
Cheers

Welcome. What area of folk music are you interested in? It is easier to give lists in a subarea than the whole mixed bag that is loosely called folk music.

Irish traditional is my main background. And old time bluegrass stuff is infectious too (doc watson and pete seeger stuff).
Of the newer crowd, i like flook, kate rusby, at first light (uileann piper john mcsherry's group) and danu etc

"major," and they are not all "new":
Bill Staines
James Keelaghan
Chuck Pyle
Albert and Gage
Brendan Nolan
..................to name a few. Cheers.

Beer .... I'm surprised you didn't mention Lennie Gallant in you list.

Lennie Gallant is a brilliant artist worth some accolades here in the Mudcat. He is from Rustico Prince Edaward Island.

Uiscedur
Witches of Elswick
Cloudstreet
Emily Smith
Jim Moray (though I haven't seen him myself, no-one creating that much fuss should be neglected)
Abbe Lathe
Rachel Unthank is getting a lot of good press and bookings
Benji Fitzgerald

and of those that have been around a little longer: sometimes it is a little difficult to be sure just how long some artists have been performing before crossing my own or your own personal horizons.

Karine Polwart
Trio Threlfall
Spiers and Boden
Tim van Eyken

Methinks Kate and Eliza don't count as "new" nowadays.
New Scorpion Band are not to be missed, however "new" they are!

Damn it "6" I did forget him, and not to far from where I was born. Also forgot to mention Brendan Nolan a great fellow with personality to booth. Copa 25 you would also like Brendan. He is from Ireland living in Florida.
