Subject: Lyr Add: THE BREAD KNIFE BALLAD (Robert Service) From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 12 Jun 06 - 04:58 AM The Bread-Knife Ballad Robert Service A little child was sitting Up on her mother's knee And down down her cheeks the bitter tears did flow. And as I sadly listened I heard this tender plea, 'Twas uttered in a voice so soft and low. Chorus: "Please Mother don't stab Father with the BREAD-KNIFE, Remember 'twas a gift when you were wed. But if you must stab Father with the BREAD-KNIFE, Please Mother use another for the BREAD." "Not guilty" said the Jury And the Judge said "Set her free, But remember it must not occur again. And next time you must listen to you little daughter's plea," Then all the Court did join in this refrain. Chorus: "Please Mother don't stab Father with the BREAD-KNIFE, Remember 'twas a gift when you were wed. But if you must stab Father with the BREAD-KNIFE, Please Mother use another for the BREAD." Subject: Lyr Add: HERE'S TO YOU ROUNDERS (Don Lang) From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 11 Jun 06 - 10:25 PM A great one, albeit about his grandfather, is Don Lang's "Here's To You Rounders": I never knew my grandad--he was always on the bum, Every September he'd grab him a southbound and he'd ride, Long about Christmas, me and my brother We would get us some cons in the mail, But we couldn't spend 'em---it was all he could send From the Mexico City jail. CHORUS Here's to you rounders and here's to you railroad bums, Hoping that you make it home soon, Here's to the women who married for love And lived with the man in the moon. One time near the end he rolled into town, He was riding on the Greyhound line, He must've got old and those boxcars got harder to climb, He dropped his last dime in a call to my granny, But, "NO!" was her only reply, She hung up the phone, cursed him in German, But I saw the pain in her yes. I never knew my grandad---he was always on the bum, The Salvation Army, they sent us a note when he died, Now me and my brother we carry the memory Of a face that we never did see, Like some foreign coin laying' cold in the pocket Of a young boy's faded bluejeans. -------------------------------------------------------- I recorded this song on my first ever solo LP album:---"Art Thieme--Outright Boldfaced Lies--Live At The Old Town School Of Folk Music"---Kicking Mule Records (KM-150) Long out of print... -- A.T. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE SCULPTOR (Mike Campbell) From: Alaska Mike Date: 11 Jun 06 - 12:10 PM I wrote this in 1994 about my dad. I still use his artwork on the covers of my CDs. The Sculptor by Mike Campbell When I was a young man I found me a sweetheart, I carried her books as we walked home from school. But then when she left me to walk with another, My poor heart was broken, I felt like a fool But my father, the sculptor, said son do not worry, For if you are patient and careful and wise, You will find you a new love and shell bring you true love, Your heart will be filled when you look in her eyes. True to his wisdom and just as he told me, I found my true love in my twenty-third year. But marriage and children and building a family, Can bring on more problems than stories you hear. But my father, the sculptor, said son do not worry, For if you are patient and careful and wise, You will let your love guide you and not become blind to, The wonders and good times your family provides. He made art out of stone, out of wood, out of bone, Sometimes he would work through the night in our home. He could take things in pieces and then make them whole, And he worked hard at sculpting my soul. As our children grew older they had many interests, They blossomed and tried many things on their own. But once in a while, they would clash with their parents, Oh, it seemed like, to them, they would never be grown. Then Grandpa, the sculptor, would say kids dont worry, For if you are patient and careful and wise, You will get through these times when no one understands you, And cherish these years 'til the day that you die. Now my wife and I sit on our boat on the ocean, We'll watch the sunset and think back on good times, And although the sculptor is no longer with us, The love that he showed us continues to shine. For throughout our lives we have tried not to worry, We've worked to be patient and careful and wise, Now we play with our grandkids and watch them as they live, And try our own hand at sculpting their lives. He made art out of stone, out of wood, out of bone, Sometimes he would work through the night in our home. He could take things in pieces and then make them whole, And he worked hard at sculpting my soul. |

Subject: Lyr Add: COME HOME FATHER (Henry Clay Work, 1864) From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 10 Jun 06 - 08:48 AM Two great Mick Hanly ones, one much more well known: "Lets Have One More From The Daddy" (referring to songs in a singaround or family gathering) and the darker "Daddy Come Down" which is a child's-eye view of a drunken father, the child understanding much more than he wants to about what's going on. The coming-down refers to coming down the stairs at home, more often than not the worse for wear. The only bit of its words I can remember is "Daddy come down, Daddy come down, Daddy don't come down with flames on your breath." A great song which I would love to get ahold of but it's not on his website or recorded CD's. Sorcha, you beat me to it, so just to get even, here are the words to Father Dear Father (nyah nyah) :-) Father, dear father, come home with me now, The clock in the steeple strikes one; You said you were coming right home from the shop As soon as your day's work was done; Our fire has gone out, our house is all dark, And mother's been watching since tea, With poor brother Benny so sick in her arms And no one to help her but me, Come home! come home! come home! Please father, dear father, come home. Chorus: Hear the sweet voice of the child, Which the night-winds repeat as they roam; Oh who could resist this most plaintive of prayers "Please father, dear father, come home." Father, dear father, come home with me now, The clock in the steeple strikes two; The night has grown colder, and Benny is worse But he has been calling for you: Indeed he is worse, ma says he will die-- Perhaps before morning shall dawn; And this is the message she sent me to bring "Come quickly, or he will be gone." Come home! come home! come home! Please father, dear father, come home. Chorus Father, dear father, come home with me now, The clock in the steeple strikes three; The house is so lonely, the hours are so long, For poor weeping mother and me; Yes, we are alone, poor Benny is dead, And gone with the angels of light; And these were the very last words that he said "I want to kiss papa good-night." Come home! come home! come home! Please father, dear father, come home. Chorus |

Subject: Lyr Add: LEADER OF THE BAND (Dan Fogelberg) From: Pauline L Date: 10 Jun 06 - 01:28 AM One of my very favorite songs is Leader of the Band (Dan Fogelberg) LEADER OF THE BAND Dan Fogelberg An only child alone and wild A cab'net maker's son His hands were meant for diff'rent work And his heart was known to none He left his home and went his lone and solitary way And he gave to me a gift I know I never can repay A quiet man of music Denied a simpler fate He tried to be a soldier once But his music wouldn't wait He earned his love thru' discipline A thund'ring velvet hand His gentle means of sculpting souls Took me years to understand The leader of the band Is tired and his eyes are growing old But his blood runs thru' my instrument And his song is in my soul My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man I'm just a living legacy To the leader of the band My brother's lives were diff'rent For they heard another call One went to Chicago and the other to St. Paul And I'm in Colorado When I'm not in some hotel Living out this life I've chose And come to know so well I thank you for the music And your stories of the road I thank you for the freedom When it came my time to go I thank you for the kindness And the times when you got tough And papa I don't think I said "I love you" near enough The leader of the band Is tired and his eyes are growing old But his blood runs thru' my instrument And his song is in my soul My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man I'm just a living legacy To the leader of the band I am the living legacy To the leader of the band ------------------ The Marvelous Toy (Tom Paxton) --------------------- A beautiful, sad song whose name I can't remember, written by our own El Greko (George Papavgeris) |

Subject: RE: father songs From: JohnInKansas Date: 08 Jun 06 - 01:29 PM Any list of songs about fathers should include A Boy Named Sue. Subject: Lyr Add: OLD FATHER FALL (Sally Rogers) From: Charley Noble Date: 07 Jun 06 - 12:04 PM This is one from Sally Rogers that I've always liked but never dared sing: OLD FATHER FALL (By Sally Rogers ©1975 Recorded on IN THE CIRCLE OF THE SUN Thrushwood Records #2, © 1982) Old Father Fall Rusty and weathered Summertime's beggar in patchwork and pins; Brisk autumn seas, Seagulls' companion, Rushing white lion, After pebbles and fins. Chorus: And I wonder what happens To summer boats on the ocean, And their dry-docked old captains With salty gray beards; To choices and voices, On those scrubbed teaky timbers, Polished brass, tarnished memories, Of love lost and won. The sea claimed his soul And his soul was the ocean, Never slowing or stopping For those on the shore; And his life was a dream, Carried by mainsails, And was drowned in those same sails In the fall of a dream. (CHO) And now he's alone, A grounded old captain, Without crew, sails or sextant to show him the way; And they've left him alone With his wants and his need-be's He just wanted to be free Of family and fear. (CHO) Charley Noble |
Subject: Lyr Add: MY OLD MAN (Steve Goodman) From: Mr Fox Date: 07 Jun 06 - 08:49 AM Anybody mentioned 'Cat's in the Cradle' yet? And how about: My Old Man (Steve Goodman) I miss the old man tonight, I wish he was here with me With his corny jokes and his cheap cigar He could look you in the eye and sell you a car That's not an easy thing to do But no one ever knew a finer man in all this land Than my old man He never talked about his war, in France when he was eighteen The day they put him in a trench was the day he learnt sense And he never again used violence He got out of uniform Came home and married mum, and not so very long after that He was my old man I remember the fights we had, my sisters and I got him mad He'd get all boiled up, he'd sometimes shout We knew what was coming so we tuned him out Now the old man's gone I'd give all I own to know what he said when I wasn't listening To my old man I miss the old man tonight, I can almost see his face He was always trying to watch his weight But his heart only made it to fifty-eight For the first time since he died Late last night I cried - I wondered when I was going to do that For my old man |

Subject: RE: father songs From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 05 Jun 06 - 04:22 PM I often sing "The Old Man". See Effsee's list but it should be "the" rather than "my". It is in the DT. It was written by Phill Coulter after the death of the Furey Brothers' father, who was a respected fiddler in his own right. Finbar recorded the song with an amazing amount of emotion. I first heard him sing it in a concert and bought the tape from them the same night so I could learn it. It was also later recorded by John McDermott. A great song by both! Sandy |
