I have the original LP, a souvenir of my stay in Glasgow in the late 60s

My attempt to "do" Rose Street in Edinboro was thwarted when we ran into Hamish (he was difficult to miss) about half way along and were treated to a rare evening's entertainment - woke up in the railway carriage in a siding outside Glasgow the next morning!

Will look out for the CD.

I loved Hamish's picking - so neat. Though I confess I only saw him a couple of times. The first time I saw him I learned Matchbox Blues off him - the old Blind lemon Jefferson thing. Years later I heard BLJ and realised that I had learned it completely wrong. But I preferred Hamish's version, and by that time I was too old and stupid to relearn it the right way. I'd love to hear that again.


I had one of the Transatlantic albums. There was some great stuff on it. Where the Gaudie Runs, a corking version of The Foggy Dew (some really good guitar picking on that)and Erin go Braugh - which you still don't don't hear in England, due to our local difficulties.

Hamish 'did' the Bermuda Folk Club while I was working out there - we had to work the three nights he was in concert , so never actually saw the show . We did meet him as he used to spend a lot of time in the bar where we were working .
It was a bit awkward as people kept asking us if he was going to sing - Our response was - "He's done his concerts , now he is on Holiday" .
Saw him a few times when we were all back in UK - Superb performer .

Great stuff - I'll be looking at the CD to replace my old vinyl. Great memories of the man from the early 1970s at gigs in London - lots of humour and a proper entertainer as well as a talented musician. Learnt a few good songs from him too.

I saw Hamish probably only three times: awesome! I loved the kids' playground skipping rhymes he used to do in his set. Now that's Folk Music with a capital "F".

Gosh, doesn't time fly? In 1999 I made a request on Mudcat for a song by Hamish and Alan B supplied me with the lyrics. (I still owe him a drink!)
It was about a man whose wife told him he had to give up his hobby....collecting bottles of whisky....so he....,

"Took the cork from the first bottle, had a little drink,
Kissed the bottle tenderly & poured it down the sink.
I uncorked the second, did the same as before.
Before I poured it down the sink, I drank a little more.
Uncorked the third, and I drank a little toast
To the losing of the ten friends I really liked the most.
Stood to attention, had another little drink,
Put the cork in the bucket and the whisky down the sink.

The next three bottles, they were very quickly swilled.
I uncorked and drained each, only drank a gill.
The next bottle baulked me, for the cork was very tight,
And the room was going round and round, which didn't help me plight.
I tried to gain me balance as I leaned against the wall,
But I couldn't draw the room from the damned sink at all.
When at last I drew it, with a mighty plop,
Fell on me arse, and I drank a glass of cork.

Well, the next sink was different, for the cork was very slack.
I held the room in one hand, and I knocked the bugger back.
I tried to count the empties as they dances before me eyes,
And I'd only got to twenty-three, when much to my surprise,
There were ten sinks of whisky, every one uncorked,
And the drain in the bottle it was very badly blocked.
And then I heard me wife as upon the door she knocked,
Fell in the bathtub and drank the bloody lot."

Now I've tried to get a recording to no avail, I had it once on vinyl but...., I bought a CD 'Sonny's Dream' but it wasn't on that.
Is it on the new one? I don't know what the track is called.

Of course, Hamish didn't write "Cod Liver Oil". It was written by Carl MacDougall and Ron Clark, according to Ewan McVicar's book "One Singer One Song". (Though as Ewan says, "Hamish's undying contribution to this song is a patented evil laugh that in the words of one reviewer 'sounds like he gargles with razor blades'. "

Ritchie, there are songs called 'Base Details' and 'Whiskey' on 'Fine Old English Tory Times' (1972). I haven't got the lyrics to either, and can't get to the recording just now, but that album might be your best bet.

Ritchie - according to one of my old song folders, the song is called Tall Tale (with my words almost identical to the copy you have above).

I saw Hamish quite a lot in the 60s (and a bit in the 70s). I really liked his playing on his version of Candyman (and similar to weelittledrummer above, that was before I heard Mississippi John Hurt do it), I heard him sing I Am A Miller To My Trade before I heard Ray Fisher do it so memorably, and I still sing Ramensky to myself sometimes.

Any one know if the CD will include Hamish's version of "Oh S**t, I've Forgotten The Words"? This was written by old mate and former singing partner, Murray Lewis. When Murray died his daughter gave me custody of all his manuscripts which includes "Oh S**t"
I try to sing it occasionally in the way Murray wrote it, which is not the way Hamish did it; he used one verse as a chorus.

Not listed as one of the tracks Bob, I haven't heard it all yet, but so far it's a mixture of live, and sometimes mediocre performances, mixed in with some better material. Typical compilation stuff really.
