I hope this is a slight improvement. I am by no means certain of these corrections.

Sorry to coming so late on this topic, i dont even know if what i m friront soule be useful to anybody... Despite what i could have imagined, i eventually saw a Picture of the Nugrape Twins : they are two white male singers, a thin and a overweighted dressed as peasants. And somebody above guessed correctly: the band was a gospel band whose the recording fees were paid by Nugrape soda against two ad songs. I know what i am saying: i just love this band, and i ve seen a recording of them last year in Germany... Maybe it still for sale on eBay. Sorry for my sp, i m glad to see That people keep listening to That great music!!

You guys run a very nice show here! Thanks again to everyone for the help. Those last few lines, while they *sound* exactly like what the singers are saying, don't seem to me to quite fit in the vernacular of the song or express the meaning you'd expect following the lines they do, especially the "that to me" part, but it sure has to be very close and I sure can't do better.

Keep a record of this thread.

WYSIWYG started and has a pretty good Spirituals permathread- 38686, African-American Spirituals. Permathreads are found by looking in FAQ (link at head of this page). Take a look at it.

Maybe it is time to start a gospel permathread along similar lines, perhaps restricted to unattributed songs. If allowed, and someone volunteers to take care of it, that might be the best solution.

I think Peace has the best ear here, but I hear the last lines as 'O that to me means all our loved ones / Will --- us in eternity' (sounds like let to me).

(Throne-stone- They do rhyme according to Webster's Collegiate. Or did I miss something here?).

Also, are you hearing 'never' in this line: "He was ever near my side" in the third stanza?

The above is what I am hearing. One of the singers (high voice) pronounces now as nour (rhymes with hour); elsewhere, that same singer pronounces throne a to rhyme with stone. I wonder if it's dialect, lisp or problems with teeth/tongue.

My wife has some experience with east coast fall line accents (not sure, but way pronounced wey suggests it).
Here's what she heard:

I downloaded (it's Real Player) and the complete song "There's a City...." is followed by a short sermon and other material of the broadcast, quite the collection! "Give Me That Old Time Religion" by Julia Dawson is amazing. (Doug Schulkind, 0ct. 21, 2005). A portion only of the song was used on another broadcast, Oct. 4, Bill Mac playlist).

So far I can't understand any more than guest Carol could (good ear!), but I will try later if no one gets it first.

A website called www.archive.org/details/Nugrape also suggests that the "Nugrape Twins' may have been gospel singers. They recorded "I Got Your Ice Cold Nugrape" in 1926. An mp3 may be downloaded from the above site.

Hmm. I see the same cut is also on a Document Records compilation called Saints and sinners. Here are the Nugrape Twins cuts from that CD:

15 - I got your ice cold Nugrape
16 - There`s a city built of mansions
17 - The road is rough and rocky
18 - Pray children if you wan`t to go to Heaven
19 - Nugrape - a flavor you can`t forget
20 - Can`t you watch me for one hour

Makes me think the Twins must have been gospel singers sponsored by Nugrape soda pop. I can't find the song listed in the usual indexes.
