Subject: RE: Lyr Req: There's a City Built of Mansions From: GUEST,Steve Darmody, Sydney, NSW Date: 21 Mar 12 - 07:35 AM There's a city built of mansions, Will there be one there for me? While I learn to love and trust him, He will never leave my side. Though temptations gather round me, And I can not find my way, (There I'll) meet with all our loved ones, Over in eternity. Blessed Jesus gently guide me, Over Jordan dark and wide. Blessed Jesus gently guide me, Safely to the other side. When my work on Earth is ended, And I sleep beneath the sod, Will my soul sing with the angels, Round the Precious Throne of God? (Once) I wandered far in darkness, When my Saviour showed me light, (continue as for first verse.). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: There's a City Built of Mansions From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Jul 11 - 06:55 AM I hope this is a slight improvement. I am by no means certain of these corrections. 1. There's a city built of mansions. O will there be one there for me? Anon I learned to love and trust him He will never leave(?) my sight. Though temptations gather round me, And I cannot see my way, O ... with all our loved ones, Let us spend eternity. 2. Blessed Jesus, gently guide me O'er that ocean dark and wide. Blessed Jesus, gently guide me Safe unto the other side. When my work on earth is ended, Anon I sleep beneath the sod. O will my soul be with thine angels Around the precious throne of God? 3. Now I wandered far in darkness, Where my Savior showed me light. Anon I learned to love and trust him. He will never leave(?) my sight. Though temptations gather round me, And I cannot see my way, O ... with all our loved ones, Let us spend eternity. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: There's a City Built of Mansions From: GUEST,Mounir Date: 12 Jul 11 - 10:00 PM Sorry to coming so late on this topic, i dont even know if what i m friront soule be useful to anybody... Despite what i could have imagined, i eventually saw a Picture of the Nugrape Twins : they are two white male singers, a thin and a overweighted dressed as peasants. And somebody above guessed correctly: the band was a gospel band whose the recording fees were paid by Nugrape soda against two ad songs. I know what i am saying: i just love this band, and i ve seen a recording of them last year in Germany... Maybe it still for sale on eBay. Sorry for my sp, i m glad to see That people keep listening to That great music!! |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: GUEST,Carol Date: 10 Jun 06 - 09:19 PM You guys run a very nice show here! Thanks again to everyone for the help. Those last few lines, while they *sound* exactly like what the singers are saying, don't seem to me to quite fit in the vernacular of the song or express the meaning you'd expect following the lines they do, especially the "that to me" part, but it sure has to be very close and I sure can't do better. Again, many thanks. Carol |

Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Jun 06 - 06:05 PM It is not easy to get something into the DT. The clones must handle it. Could take years. Keep a record of this thread. WYSIWYG started and has a pretty good Spirituals permathread- 38686, African-American Spirituals. Permathreads are found by looking in FAQ (link at head of this page). Take a look at it. Maybe it is time to start a gospel permathread along similar lines, perhaps restricted to unattributed songs. If allowed, and someone volunteers to take care of it, that might be the best solution. Quien sabe! |
Subject: Lyr Add: THERE'S A CITY BUILT OF MANSIONS From: Peace Date: 10 Jun 06 - 05:25 PM There's a city built of mansions Will there be one there for me Now I learned to love and trust him He will never yield(?) my side Though temptations gather round me And I cannot see my way O that to me means all our loved ones Will let us in eternity Let dear Jesus gently guide me Oer that fortress dark and wide Let dear Jesus gently guide me Safely to the other side When my work on earth is ended And now I sleep beneath the sod Will my soul be with an angel Around the precious throne of God. Now I wandered far in darkness Where my savior showed me light Now I learned to love and trust him He was ever near my side Though temptations gather round me And I cannot see my way O that to me means all our loved ones Will let us in eternity Does this look 'good enough' for the DT? |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Peace Date: 10 Jun 06 - 02:33 PM You know what happened to Nixon the last time . . . . |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Jun 06 - 01:59 PM Now who wrote this gospel song? What were the names of the Nugrape Twins? Where were they from? Just pay my fare (RT 1Cl) to the Library of Congress and a week at the Watergate and I will try to find out. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: GUEST,Carol Date: 10 Jun 06 - 08:44 AM Many thanks to all who listened and helped me decipher this. Much appreciated! Carol |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Peace Date: 10 Jun 06 - 01:07 AM YOU GOT IT. O that to me means all our loved ones Will let us in eternity Looking at the words and hearing it, yep!, that's it. Good one, Q. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Jun 06 - 01:02 AM I think Peace has the best ear here, but I hear the last lines as 'O that to me means all our loved ones / Will --- us in eternity' (sounds like let to me). (Throne-stone- They do rhyme according to Webster's Collegiate. Or did I miss something here?). |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Peace Date: 10 Jun 06 - 12:45 AM Meant to say 'pronounces throne' without the 'r' in it. Also, are you hearing 'never' in this line: "He was ever near my side" in the third stanza? I'm gonna leave if for now and give it a fresh listen manana. Great team effort here. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Jun 06 - 12:38 AM "Some serious difficulty" is descriptive. Still sounds like 'let' to me, but greet at least makes sense. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Peace Date: 10 Jun 06 - 12:38 AM There's a city built of mansions Will there be one there for me Now I learned to love and trust him He will never yield(?) my side....<--- [This line is making me crazy] Though temptations gather round me And I cannot see my way That just means that all our loved ones Have met us in eternity. Let dear Jesus gently guide me Oer that fortress dark and wide Let dear Jesus gently guide me Safely to the other side When my work on earth is ended And now I sleep beneath the sod Will my soul be with an angel Around the precious throne of God. Now I wandered far in darkness Where my savior showed me light Now I learned to love and trust him He was ever near my side Though temptations gather round me And I cannot see my way That just mean that all our loved ones Have met us in eternity The above is what I am hearing. One of the singers (high voice) pronounces now as nour (rhymes with hour); elsewhere, that same singer pronounces throne a to rhyme with stone. I wonder if it's dialect, lisp or problems with teeth/tongue. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Peace Date: 10 Jun 06 - 12:16 AM could it be greet? I am havin' some serious difficulty with the lines we are all having trouble with. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Jun 06 - 12:05 AM I think Peace has durn near solved it. Now I hear the last two lines as- O that to me just means that all our loved ones Will meet* us in eternity. *Sounds like let, but meet makes more sense. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: GUEST,Carol Date: 09 Jun 06 - 11:56 PM Wow, that's great! I think we're really closing in on it! Thanks very much to everyone's good ears! Carol |
Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 09 Jun 06 - 11:38 PM My wife has some experience with east coast fall line accents (not sure, but way pronounced wey suggests it). Here's what she heard: There's a city built of mansions O will there be one there for me Now I learned to love and trust him He was ever near my side. Though temptations gather round me And I cannot see my way Oh *that to me is called our loved one Let it be till eternity. Let dear Jesus gently guide me O'er the fortunes dark and wide O let dear Jesus gently guide me Safely to the other side. When my work on earth is ended And now I sleep beneath the sod O will my soul be with thine angels Around the precious throne of God. Now I wandered far in darkness Where my Savior showed me light Now I learned to love and trust him He was ever near my side. Though temptations gather round me And I cannot see my way O that to me is called our loved one Let it be till eternity. The last two lines still need work, but the above may help Carol or someone to finish it. It may be that their rendition of the last two lines is not grammatically correct, hence our trouble with them. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 09 Jun 06 - 10:38 PM The link posted by Clare Bear is working (WFMU, playlist ) I downloaded (it's Real Player) and the complete song "There's a City...." is followed by a short sermon and other material of the broadcast, quite the collection! "Give Me That Old Time Religion" by Julia Dawson is amazing. (Doug Schulkind, 0ct. 21, 2005). A portion only of the song was used on another broadcast, Oct. 4, Bill Mac playlist). So far I can't understand any more than guest Carol could (good ear!), but I will try later if no one gets it first. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 09 Jun 06 - 02:47 PM A website called www.archive.org/details/Nugrape also suggests that the "Nugrape Twins' may have been gospel singers. Subject: RE: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Jun 06 - 02:00 PM Hmm. I see the same cut is also on a Document Records compilation called Saints and sinners. Here are the Nugrape Twins cuts from that CD: 15 - I got your ice cold Nugrape 16 - There`s a city built of mansions 17 - The road is rough and rocky 18 - Pray children if you wan`t to go to Heaven 19 - Nugrape - a flavor you can`t forget 20 - Can`t you watch me for one hour Makes me think the Twins must have been gospel singers sponsored by Nugrape soda pop. I can't find the song listed in the usual indexes. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: Lyrics--There's a City Built of Mansions From: GUEST,Carol Francis Date: 09 Jun 06 - 01:33 PM Does anyone have the lyrics for this song, which is sung by the Nugrape Twins on that great collection, American Primitive, vol.2? I can figure out most of them but there are a few lines that baffle me. Thanks in advance. Carol |
