Still on a high from actualy playing in same singaround as Stitherum,The Cater Twins, and Hellian Keys etc.
Jen and I were talking about it last night and we both made the same comment at same time.
Doesnt MR Sooz play beautifully.
Was a big thrill for us and the guys with the Mandolin and guitar ,and recorder/gutar duet was just great to hear it all.
Is still new and fresh to us not like you Jaded lot!

Well I think he is spot on and I enjoyed the chance to listen.
I also like the variety of materiel you come up with.
I think Terry and she who's name cannot be spelled correctly are great. I could have sat and listened to them "Just paracticing" for another hour and a half that day we came to the scarecrow fesrival.
I would like to add although I am getting to know Ian and Hellen quite well and sometimes get to play with them, they always manage to suprise me.
In fact I think MRFC is so well endowed with resident performers you cant really go far wrong.
I love to hear unacompanied singing.
When we played at those five folk clubs in one week last year I heard a fantastic variety of performers and enjoyed every one.
I dont know what the proper name for it is,and Jen isnt here to ask, but we visited a club at a place called Flaxton just of the NYmoors
We joined in a singaround and the sound you get when twenty people all suddenly join in a chorus with harmonies and a lot of passion,it does things to your insides.
I am.I freely admit a musical ignoramus but I know when I hear something I like.

Do you mean A Capella - Twangy

You should go to Gainsborough Folk Club and Grimsby Folk Club for A Capella, Twangy

You will get wonderful harmonies at Gainsborough, Tim. At Grimsby they tend to join in in unison. Either way it is a great feeling although it can be a bit unsettling until you get used to it.
Its great to visit lots of clubs - vive la diffence!
Careful what you say about Gwenda - she could decide to turn you into a frog even when you are saying something nice! :-)

Doesn't he have to be a prince for that to happen...oh no, it is the other way round , I think!
Perhaps next singaround at MRFC we should throw in one really well known song, and make it clear that everyone is to join in with harmonies or tune. It is great to be part of it when everyone is joining in.
I love singing harmonies and i know what Twangy means about that feeling you get when the sounds and voices all blend together with emotion...

Wish I hadnt mentioned it now looks a bit girly written down.
We had some great nights out over the week and made to feel welcome a la MRFC.
Only wish I could do it me self.
I did ask around while we where there and the majority of the people said they had been brought up with that kind of singing.
Is great to hear the difference in repetoire as well as you travel around even short distances.
That Gwenda is so cute the way she wiggles her nose then looks down at the floor all expectantly.
Maybe if she borrows wookies broomstick?

She doesn't need to borrow a broomstick!
One of the problems with using a PA is that you can only read the audiences lips to tell if they are joining in and harmonies are lost. I for one rarely join in when the artist is using a PA although I may mumble along to myself.
Tim, you should go along to some harmony workshops at festivals. They are great fun.

Hey, that's ok everyone, stick up for Gwenda but I notice you all agree i have a broomstick........!!!
I traded it in when I got my extra long super duper piano....it just wouldn't balance on the end...
I like using PA if I am playing with WWW but only if it is set up really sensitively so that it just sounds like a slightly louder and well-balanced version of the acoustic sound of the band. Playing without PA is more relaxed, in my experience but not always easy to get female vocals over unless you have a powerful voice, especially with four instruments playing at once. I like to hear a wide variety of music and I think it is good that many different venues and clubs exist to offer people a good choice of approaches and styles of music. The more we can all support these different places, the more chance the variety and quantity of venues will continue. Not always easy to get out of that armchair sometimes and go out after a busy day but Big Brother really isn't that amazing really, is it?!lol

So while she drags herself out of that wicca chair i am reminded of her online name so is it a wicca wocca?
Now I am not a wicca wocca knocker but are we getting into tabloid territory.
Folk club in wicca wocca knocker shocker.
And of course there is Les with his hook to get in on the act
He would be the Wicca Wocca knocker shocker clocker
Wouldnt he.
I think that as the famous venue that the beetles played was the Cavern.
The name for the MRFC would be the coven
If he had a really long hook he could stand outside the door taking the money and still get the acts off on stage!
Sort of a street hooker.

A lot of variety Rockhen :-)

It will open with Beltona Band who I think I am right in saying do English and Scottish tunes with the odd song. All musicians a very capable players. 30 minutes

Next will be James Raynard. James Raynard is a young English folk singer, guitarist and fiddle player, based in Yorkshire. He was signed to One Little Indian Record's folk imprint Unearthed in 2005. His debut album Strange Histories was launched at Cambridge Folk Festival that summer. He was nominated for the BBC2 Awards this year.
James Raynard is a young English folk singer, guitarist and fiddle player, based in Yorkshire. In 2005 he was signed to One Little Indian Record's folk imprint Unearthed. His debut album Strange Histories was launched at Cambridge Folk Festival and officially released on September 10th 2005.

James is a self-taught musician who discovered folk music in his early twenties via Bob Dylan rather than through the classic route of family upbringing. When James turned his attention to English folk music he soon cultivated a deep and often obsessive fascination. His explorations led him to take up the fiddle and to study Folklore at Sheffield University. As James started to develop as a performer he formed a close relationship with folk hero Martin Carthy, who says,

"James Raynard loves music, is inquisitive, passionate and brave. He is willing to take the sort of chances which make music an exciting place in which to work."

Under the guidance of Carthy and mighty fiddle-player Gina Le Faux, James went on to performances alongside such well-known folk names as John and Benji Kirkpatrick, Eddie Upton and Rob Harbron.

James' strong sense of rhythm was apparent in all his performances and he was in demand as a traditional dance musician, but it was his direct and engaging treatment of folksongs that brought him notoriety. James was signed to Unearthed in Late 2004.

An interest in the earliest known English music peppers his repertoire and an 'echo of the medieval' is often apparent, perhaps most notably in his rendition of the old ballad The Outlandish Knight. The result is a performer who brings character and energy and his live shows and recordings, while upholding the simplest methods of presentation.

By spring 2005 James was in a castle in Herefordshire recording his debut solo album with producer Jim Moray. After appearances at festivals and on BBC Radio 2's Mike Harding Show, his album was officially released in September '05.

James is also a member of stomping Sheffield-based folk trio Rackaback. 45 minutes

After the break comes Karen & Colin Thompson. Karen & Colin from North Lincolnshire are continuing to gain a reputation as excellent performers. Originally a classical guitarist, Colin has combined elements of classical and traditional styles and the distinctive rhythms and decorations of Scottish pipe tunes which he has adapted for guitar. Karen has explored a range of musical genres from choral singing to punk rock.
Together they have created a refreshing sound, setting poetry to self-composed tunes, finding little known traditional ballads and performing well-known songs in an individual manner. This provides an interesting and varied repertoire of love songs, wicked tales, pirate ballads and much more, all underpinned by the couple's obvious love of their music and good-humoured banter. They will do 30 minutes.

Last of all is Cara. Cara play mainly Celtic-inspired music. They are an excellent band that consists of David Oakley who plays lovely fiddle, Mike Ryan - vocals uilleann pipes, mandolin, wistles and guitar, John Rawlings - guitar and cittern. 45 minutes

Is that enough Rockhen :-)

How the devil are yers this mornin?
The thought of a bottle of Teachers is a bit weird innit?
Is enough to drive you to drink although drink driving is not realy an option for us townies.
Of course all the female teachers I know would have to be a in a Dimple bottle 'cos tht would stil allow em to look cute.
All male teachers would have better taste in whiskey than to drink Teachers I think.
Drink Teachers!
leave the Whiskey alone!
let your liver live and learn.
