Subject: North Wind's Cookie, Lollipop Tree, et. al. From: hiber@daktel.com Date: 20 Feb 99 - 12:16 AM I'm looking for the words to several old children's songs. I remember them as being sung by Burl Ives, back in my childhood 1950's, but I haven't found them on any of his albums, or in any databases anywhere else. Did I just dream them, or does anyone else remember these? I think the one went: "The moon is the North Wind's cookie; He eats it day by day Until there's but a little crust Which crumbles all away.
The South Wind is the baker. He kneads
If I am remembering correctly, there were two more songs on the album, one of which had a chorus of "Me and my lollipop, lollipop, lollipop, lolly, lolly, lollipop tree." And also "There was a little turtle who lived in a box, and swam in a puddle, and climbed on the rocks..."
Do these ring a bell with anyone? |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE LOLLIPOP TREE From: Margo Date: 20 Feb 99 - 07:21 AM Here's the Lollipop tree: One fine day in early spring I played a funny trick: Right in the yard behind our house I planted a lollypop stick. And every day I watered it well and watched it carefully, I hoped that stick would someday grow to be a lollypop tree. chorus:Ha Ha Ha, Ho Ho Ho, what a sight to see! me and my lollypop lollypop lollypop lolly lolly lollypop tree. Then one day I woke to find a very lovely sight- A tree all full of lollypops had grown in the dark of the night! I sat beneath that wonderful tree and looked up with a grin, And when I opened up my mouth a pop would drop right in! Chorus Winter came and days grew cold, as winter days will do. On my tree, my lovely tree, not one little lollypop grew. From every branch an icicle hung, the twigs were bare as bones, But when I broke the icicles off they turned to ice cream cones! Chorus There is a CD out of Burl Ives called the Little White Duck and other favorites. I have the origonal album from which they took the songs, but unfortunately a couple of songs are omitted, one being the lollypop tree. Margarita |

Subject: RE: North Wind's Cookie, Lollipop Tree, et. al. From: hibercamp Date: 20 Feb 99 - 12:40 PM Thanks for the helps Margarita, and rich r. You've given me more of a clue than I have come with, idly searching every now and again over the past few years, and at least the assurance that I didn't just dream these up. Thanks especially for the album referrences, and the citation of the "Little White Duck" title. Now that you bring that up, I remember that one too. Maybe I can finally find the "Cookie" song that I used to make up verses to when I sang to my son. Now that I have a grandson to sing to, I'd like to get back to the original. Thanks again. hibercamp |
Subject: RE: North Wind's Cookie From: GUEST,moonfan Date: 29 Jan 10 - 09:07 PM I grew up with the north wind's cookie but never heard it in song, only in the gentle cadence of my daddy's voice. Daddy sat with me on the back porch stairs and when that huge orange moon, with the crispy brown edges, began to rise above the horizon of our farm, he would point at it and tell me its story. I'm in my fifties, and now when I point out a north wind's cookie, I get weird looks and a lot of WTF are you talking about. It's really sad that today's youth don't have a clue about the joy in a young child's heart from my era of awe and daddy taught beliefs. |
Subject: RE: North Wind's Cookie, Lollipop Tree, et. al. From: moonfan Date: 29 Jan 10 - 09:45 PM Anyone heard of this one? "I see the moon and the moon sees me. When you see the moon, do you see what I see?" If so, where did it originate? Just curious - if people around the world are looking at the same moon on the same night, at the same time, are we all seeing the same view? |

Subject: RE: North Wind's Cookie, Lollipop Tree, et. al. From: GUEST,kiolinda Date: 19 Mar 10 - 10:22 PM this was the second song on the first side of an album that he did back in the sixties. I sang it to my children when they were little and sang it to my grand-daughter last night. The moon's the north winds cookie. He eats it day by day. Until there's just a rim of crust that crumbles all away. The south wind is a baker. He kneads clouds in his den. He'll bake a crisp new moon for greedy north wind to eat again. |
Subject: RE: North Wind's Cookie, Lollipop Tree, et. al. From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Apr 10 - 10:50 PM According to a listing in Billboard magazine, June 16, 1951, there was a record (45-rpm, I suppose), Columbia MJV-110, with THE LOLLIPOP TREE on one side and THE LITTLE TURTLE and THE MOON IS THE NORTH WIND'S COOKIE on the other; performed by Burl Ives and the Percy Faith Orchestra. Vachel Lindsay was credited as co-author of THE LITTLE TURTLE and THE MOON IS THE NORTH WIND'S COOKIE. (I suppose Lindsay wrote the words and Ives wrote the music.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: North Wind's Cookie, Lollipop Tree, ... From: GUEST,Gregory Hollow Tree Date: 29 Sep 10 - 04:27 AM Vachel Lindsay was a poet and he wrote a poem called "The Moon's the North Wind's Cooky (What the Little Girl Said)" which was published in 1914. This was turned into a song recorded by Burl Ives at least twice - once with an orchestra and once just with his guitar. A great version was recorded by The Hollow Trees for their record Wacky's Tackle in 2010. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: North Wind's Cookie, Lollipop Tree, ... From: GUEST,Fidee Date: 12 Dec 10 - 08:03 PM My mom used to read that one to me, all of the time. I'm only eighteen, though, so it makes me feel weird that many of my peers have never heard it. But, the one above is what I'm really commenting on. My mom sang that to me, "I see the moon and the moon see's me, The moon see's somebody I can't see. God bless the moon and god bless me, And God bless somebody I can't see." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: North Wind's Cookie, Lollipop Tree, ... From: gnomad Date: 13 Dec 10 - 01:53 AM Fidee: this one has come up in earlier discussion, click on Thread about "I see the moon" for info, discussion, and more links. Hope it helps, and welcome to the 'Cat. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: North Wind's Cookie + Lollipop Tree + ... From: GUEST,David Hunt. Date: 23 Mar 11 - 05:37 AM Thank you. I am coming up to 73 yoa, and as a child at Pensford School in Somerset, England, I remember a Teacher having us recite a poem. It went :- The moon is the North winds biscuit, He eats it day by day. And that is all I can remember. I have mentioned it many times through the years and have never found anyone knowing it. About an hour ago, 08-30, March 23rd 2011 !!! I was reading a nostalgia paper and poems came up, which reminded me of the one I remembered all those years ago, and I thought, "Google". So I typed in the first line, and BINGO. you have supplied me with the words. Now as you have "Cookie" as opposed to my "Biscuit, I take it you are in the U S of A. So thank you once again. I can now type it out and keep it. Kind regards. David. (Hunt). |
