I learnt this from the Judy Collins 5 album but, when singing it, have always introduced it as a Richard Farina song.

As one of the grey haired brigade I now-a-days regard part of my role as educating the young-uns of the origins of the songs that they introduce as by the person they heard sing it recently. Probably a bit irritating for them but I feel better afterwards.

The story of the song being co-written is covered, I think, in David Hajdu's highly-recommended book.

The expression "pack up your sorrows" was used by Pauline Marden and picked up by Richard Farina. So, when he wrote the song, he attributed her contribution by giving her co-writing credits. Whether she did more than that I don't know; she wasn't a musician or performer like her two younger sisters, Joan and Mimi.

There's a good introduction to the trad. sources of Farina's songs here: http://www.richardandmimi.com/sources.html

. . . never mind the number of "wrote" songs introduced as traditional.

Pauline Baez Marden, the eldest of the three Baez sisters, is blessed with the same musical genes that her sisters Joan and Mimi share, but she chose a quieter, less public life than they did. Her appearance with Dick and Mimi at the Kings Rook in the winter of 1965 gave me a rare opportunity to photograph Mimi and Pauline performing together.

Pauline Mardon is Joan Baez's older sister, Mimi Farina was her younger sister.
All in the family!

Peace - cant agree more - AND a lot of singers are perpetuatiung the problem by introducing a song as XXX's song (The Singer they got it from) Rather than crediting the composer . Christie Moore is a case in point - He has written some damn fine songs , but the number of traditional songs I have heard introduced as Christie's Beggars Belief !

What's become a real PITA is songs being posted on the www according to who sings it and the authorship being ignored.

"Pack Up Your Sorrows, written by Richard Farina and Pauline Marden. I think this song is one of the simplest and prettiest of their efforts and would have the broadest appeal."

I believe that was a completely original Richard Farina composition, and a very good one too. Possibly his best.

the book "Positively 4th Street", a fairly even-handed look at the intersecting lives and careers of Dylan, Baez, Richard Farina and Mimi Baez Farina up to the mid-60's.

if you check out the digital tradition you will find copyright date,
recording info and the lyrics.

My Judy Collins songbook says it was copyrighted in 1964. And that she recorded it in 1965.

Does anybody know if the tune was original?
When was it copywritten?

Are there any interesting stories regarding this piece by Richard Farina and Pauline Marden?

Thanks.
