The latter includes abc notation. I'd quarrel with some of the note values, but it's a decent start. Both threads are easily found via the onsite search engine, provided you are aware that there are variations in the title: search for joe the boat for best results.

A version of the 'A' part of the tune is also used for the tune known as 'Clee Hill' as collected from Dennis Crowther who is from that area, which is not far from Ludlow in South Shropshire. The tune was used by the morris/molly dancers from Clee Hill area and in 'pre-PC' days was known as 'The niggerin' tune' as the dancers went out with blacked-up faces and called it 'Goin' out a-niggerin' The use of the term molly instead of morris,was common in Shropshire and I have met people who remembers 'Going out molly-dancing' in East Shropshire in the 1930s-40s

My uncle, Simon Richie has been know to sing this. It's on the CD below, as a copy of John Read singing it from a 78. I'd send you a copy, but it seems to have been 'borrowed' by my other half, so isn't to hand at the moment....

If you can hang on for a short while there is a book on the way from Katie Howson and Co, I think via either the East Anglian Musical Traditions Trust or the Howson's Veteran label all about songs and tunes popular with the traditional players in East Anglia, and I believe that Oh Joe, The Boat is Going Over is featured in some depth. The original song is of music hall origins and many different versions - presumably due to it being passed around by ear and after varying quantities of beer have been recorded together with quite a lot of lyrical variations. The Musical Traditions website had an article about this which should still be accessible. The aforementioned Veteran label do a good double cassette (not on CD) of archive recordings of East Anglian traditional melodeon players such as Suffolk's Oscar Woods and some of the variants can be heard on that.
