Subject: Myspacer Gigs - Any ideas?
From: Lizzie Cornish
Date: 23 Jun 06 - 06:25 PM

Hi guys,

Not too sure if I'm doing the right thing here or not...but....I always like to jump in with both feet!

So...I have this idea! Over in Myspace, you get to hear about musicians who would love to come and do some gigs, over here in the UK.

Not having a folk/acoustic cafe/club/theatre of my own and not knowing quite how to help, I suddenly thought about having a thread where we could all put down names of various artists who we know are coming over here and seeking gigs.

Then, anyone interested in booking them or getting in touch etc..could either send them a message via Myspace, or...if they don't belong to Myspace, could PM me or anyone else who passes these messages on.

So...here are two artists that I know about.

Mark Thunderwolf
http://www.myspace.com/thunderwolf

He only has one track playing on there at present, but it's beautiful music. Mark is about to tour a bit in Sweden, then he's hoping to come over here and stay until around December.

Vinnie James:
http://www.myspace.com/vinniejames

Vinnie's hoping to come and live over here in the UK towards the end of this year, and he's hoping to play some acoustic gigs either on his own or supporting other artists. We've just bought Vinnie's 'All American Boy' CD and it's great! Filled with strong, meaningful songs about man's inhumanity to man. Very kind, caring and consderate man too.

Hope this is thread is OK and starts the ball rolling for a few more people too.

Oh...and by the way....I think someone should book Jed Marum for a UK tour as well! Jed doesn't know I've said that....I just think it would be a grand idea! Have you heard his 'Soul Of A Wanderer' Ohhhhh! ;0)

Jed Marum:

And I'd like to volunteer my services for free washing-up and making of teas and coffees at all above mentioned artists gigs! ;0)

OR.....maybe we could turn this thread into a list of folk/acoustic clubs/cafes or just LIVE MUSIC VENUES and their e mail addresses, contact numbers or Myspace pages, right around the country.

Then I and you could pass this thread on to people all over the place.

I'll start then and I'll put the locations in as well, so that anyone who reads this from abroad will get a rough idea of where they are.

Twickenham Folk Club: (London)

Barnsley Folk Club: (Yorkshire)

Lizzie,

I don't think there are many Sussex Folkies using

http://www.myspace.com/acoustic_sussex.

Of those whose pictures I have seen only Garry the bass player is a person I know to play in the Sussex Sussex area (sometimes over in to Kent as well)

Seemsto me that most of the people are of the contemporary Singer-Songwriter types. Not that there is anything wrong with their style of music but it just aint what I go out to see.

Dave

What I think you are trying to do is difficult Lizzie. Folk Clubs, sessions, etc. are notorious for closing, changing venues, days of week, etc. without keeping anyone informed. Even people running local listings can have trouble keeping up with changes.

That was the big reason why we tried to link to mostly regional listings with our attempt at folkinfo. Even the listing pages come and go btw, without thinking about individual clubs.

Other attempts at providing this type of information I'm aware of include Martin Nail's listings and Jim Lawton's folkmap provides an interesting approach.

Here's a BRILLIANT idea from those fabulous guys over at Woven Wheat Whispers, who are bending over backwards to provide a site that is one of the most informative I've ever seen!

They're busy compiling a list of, to use their words: "Folk Clubs, Bookers and Agents" in the UK....and they've a list of Folk Magazines on there as well!

Here is the relevant page for anyone watching this thread:

Well done WWW Lads!!
